The Internet vs. The Library

I just read a thread asking if Internet Marketing was killing the Internet. Clearly, that was an absurd question, but that is not the point of this post.

I often wonder why people use the phrase "Internet marketing". You never hear about a company that advertises on the radio being branded as a "radio marketer". What about TV commercials? Surely, you have seen commercials for some horrible products, but nobody asks if commercials are killing television.

People, it is 2011. Most radio and TV commercials give a website address along with their product name. Every company has a website. Does that mean that every company should be branded as an Internet Marketer?

I too remember when there was more "information" on the web than commercials, but you need to realize that when Al Gore created the Internet as we know it, it was created as a tool for commerce. It was not created to be a publicly funded place for free information.

If you are seeking such a place, one already exists. It's called the library. You won't find any commercials (good or bad) there.

So, do we now consider every business in the world to be Internet Marketers or can we just call ourselves marketers?

From the WSO in your sig:

"My name is E. Brian Rose. I've been an Internet marketer since 1999..."

Maybe people use it because its appropriate at times?

I didn't say that I didn't use the term! It is the term that people most associate working from home with these days, so it must be used. My question was about where the line is drawn.

I know this post is nearly a month old but it's worth bringing back.

The library is a great wealth of your future info products ready to be born!

It was probably 6 months ago now, but a JV partner (Alan Petersen) and I created a product based solely off information we found at 1 or 2 trips to the library.

That product sold hundreds of units and I still get a clickbank check to this day from people who continue to promote it.

That's so obvious. The library still offers a wealth of information on just about any topic you can imagine. I've got a huge one right down the street I should go check out more often.

it just depends on if you want information quickly or laser-focused.

if i have time and just want to focus and retain the most information, i'll go to the library or buy some books from barnes and noble and end up retaining more than i can google.

Yes, many libraries do have free internet services for cardholders.

I will say another great use for your local library is tapping into those darn expensive directories they purchase every year.

If you haven't gone down to your local branch to take a look at the SRDS, you are missing out on a real treat!

These directories cost $900+ each, and my local library has an entire wall of them and they purchase new ones when they are released.

It's also possible to buy some of these older directories (just ask if they will be/are selling them...)

    They are a real goldmine.

    Best,

Hey! Internet marketers are just great intellectuals who have decided to take part in the full utilization of replacing the expensive advertisements such as billboards, radios, televisions with a more effective marketing means of using internet in terms of blogging, article writing and s.e.o. to take the marketing advantage at hand; of people who are not aware of the existence of such people who use their websites to make money.

    Good article.

Actually, the history and culture of the Internet began as information sharing, much like a library. E-commerce came to the game later, but the point of the OP about marketing in general killing the Internet or TV or radio or whatever, well

With the high price of cable that we pay to have programming, people do indeed complain about the ridiculous amount of commercials we are subjected to and I rarely watch TV because of it. I'd prefer to rent commercial free movies and watched without that harassment. Same goes with Radio, not to mention the mountains of junk mail that I literally throw away without even a peep to see what's inside.

Then there's movies ... you pay a fortune to get into a movie now and what's the first thing that greets you? Commercials. Bloody annoying when you've decided to splurge on a movie night out.

When I search for information on the Internet, I am searching for information ... not a cheesy Clickbank product, so thank you Google ... for the changes in your algo that help to prevent the "thin affiliate sites" from showing in my search for information.

If I want to buy something, I certainly know how to search to find it.
