Hi all,

I don't much about proxies, mainly private proxies or public (share?) proxies. Can someone give me a brief explanation on what they are and the benefits.

Thank you,
Para10

Here is a good information source on proxies

Proxy server - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Regarding your question on private and shared proxies, well private proxies are exclusive to you and not shared by anyone else. You can get them for as as low as $2 per proxy per month. Shared proxies are a lot cheaper but they are shared by few number of people. Public proxies are shared by hundreds or even thousands of people and are often not the best option if you want to get any work done fast.

It depends on what you intend to use a proxy for...

Automated SEO / Scraping software such as "Scrapebox" use proxies to allow their automatic functions to get past search engine spamming filters.

In simple terms, the computer your running will have an IP address. If the search engines receive too many requests in a short time from the same IP you can get your IP banned, because they suspect foul play.

Hence the reason that proxies are used because generally the automated software will use different proxies for each request it makes to the search engines, therefore protecting your own IP and not raising suspicion.

    Hope that makes sense.

  • Proxies help to 'hide' who you really are when visiting a website.

Generally speaking, people use proxies to either protect their personal information -- or they use them so they can spam various services (whether inflating traffic numbers through comment spam, blog spam, etc, etc).
