Promoting Iphone apps...is it profitable?

Hi all. I'm dabbling in the gaming app/mobile scene. I notice tons of websites that review mobile apps. I assume most get their money from either paid banner ads, or commission on promoted apps.

Like, imagine if you had promoted angry birds.

Do people buy apps through browsers?

I have a site that is reviewing games, technology and aggregating news in that area. It's quite niche, a specific style of gaming app. I'm just doing it for fun, but foresee a profitable future. Just not sure how yet.

I mean, I would need to promote a lot of apps at $1.99 to make some money.

Apple has an affiliate program with a fairly small payout (maybe 4%) but the high volume of sales do add up, 3rd party app developers have earned nearly 2 billion dollars. I image high traffic sites might earn electric bill money from app affiliates on a level similar to? adsense.

You can get money for reviewing apps. Between $30 and $50 per review if your site gets good traffic in that niche.

This is a great idea, but they better be positive reviews or who's going to click through the affiliate link hehe. Anyone have a good example or a good review?

    • It would be great to see a case study on this.

I've always been skeptical that people click through app affiliate links and buy on their computer versus pulling their phone out of their pocket and more easily buying there (and earning me no money).

On the other hand, I see a ton of app review sites with affiliate link so there's probably some opportunity.

That's exactly what I'm wondering. Would people just read the review, then purchase off their phone?

App reviews? I can write those. I assume you mean selling app reviews to other websites for a one time publishing fee?

Right now, people find apps by just going to their phone, going to the app store, picking the category they like and install or buy something on the first page. Therefore, if your app isn't on the first page, then you can basically forget it. Therefore, if you want to promote apps, then create a method by which you can get them onto the first page. It will have to be a method that can get them a ton of installs in a short period of time - an advertising blitz on all the social networks plus the main search sites like Google, Yahoo and Bing. If you can pull that off for about $10,000, then charge your clients $20,000 to get them onto the first page.

      Ahh.

Since I'm an app junkie I always scroll through the sales copy and scan for reviews. I always see things like, toucharcade and other familiar sites. I rarely frequent these sites however.

I wonder if the guys making the apps would pay a top rated review site for ad space? Maybe, $10-20 k? Not that this wouldn't be biased.

I've been scouring the Internet but can't find a thing on how app review sites make their money.

Sounds good but too much of an investment and too much risk. Definitely could give it a shot though

Check out this link for BuySellAds: All Things Apple | BuySellAds.com

You'll find a bunch of app sites/blogs that sell ad space, should give you a start on "app marketing" and what is currently being charged in the space...btw, you'll find TouchArcade, AppSafari, etc. and you'll be able to see the impressions they deliver and how much those particular sites charge.
