I'm not aware of any domain registrar that offers free privacy for life. I do know that Namecheap offers a package of 5 sites for like $8.99/year or something like that.

I haven't heard of a free whois domain registrar, I'm not sure on the technology behind it but can't you firewall Apache server running through your computer? Not the best idea for most sites.

The good thing about Namecheap is that you can extend your privacy protection pretty inexpensively, I believe it ranges from $2.88 for one year to $7.88 for five years (can also be stacked separately on up to 5 domains, if you want).

I don't think there is any company that would give it to you free for life, right off the bat. Having said that, you can get it free from name.com using the coupon code "FREEWHOIS" - that's been working for me for about 18 months now on dozens of domain, though I haven't tried it on a renewal...

    Cheers

I've just checked the Amin Panel with my 1&1.com account. They state:

1&1 offers private registration for free however private registration is not allowed with all types of domains.

        Other Important Points
        1) Private Domain registration is not available for .us domains.
        2) Subdomains cannot have Private Domain registration.
        3) No Private Domain registration for External Domains. You will have to contact the registrar of the domain.
        4) When you change a domain's registration from Private to Public, a warning is displayed saying e-mail address in WHOIS will be deleted and any e-mail in a mailbox is deleted (unless forwarded to an external e-mail address).

I think the comments above about Namecheap giving free privacy protection only for one year may not quite be right: this is if you originally register the name for only one year, isn't it?

I may be wrong, but I think they actually give free privacy protection for however many years you register for, in the first instance, don't they?

GoDaddy also gives free privacy protection on all orders of 5+ domain-names paid for in one transaction.

If you cannot afford $2-3 after one year for whois protection... then maybe you need to re-think your marketing efforts.

Namecheap gives you the free whois guard when you register a domain with them. After that, you will have to pay. However if you cannot afford the few dollars for privacy protection, you have no business renewing the domain in the first place.

I wanted to bump this old thread...

I know that NameCheap gives free whois protection when you register a domain, but then you have to pay a $2.88 renewal fee at each annual renewal (which can add up if you have a LOT of domains)

Does internet.bs still have free whois protection for life?

(IE: Not needing an annual renewal fee like NC?)

I really don't think this is quite right, for a couple of reasons ...

        (i) You can buy whois-guards from Namecheap - if, as you say, you have a lot of domains - at $7.88 for 5, which is under $1.58 each, and ...

(ii) I think I'm right in saying that their free whois-protection with purchase isn't limited to one year anyway, but lasts for as long as you initially register the name - so, for example, if you register for 3 years, you'll get 3 years whois-guard free as well. Am open to correction on this point if I'm mistaken.

I don't know how it used to be, but it's not like that anymore. Anything beyond one year is the normal price.

Namecheap is awesome though. I'd use them even if you find someone to throw in free Whois.

WOW - some great suggestions here...

Especially seeing as though 'NameCheap' is thrown around so much - FREE for the first year and you can always find coupons for cheaper renewals, ect.

They definitely get my vote... GO TEAM NAMECHEAP

Oh yeah, their customer service rock's too... well, compared with GoDaddy anyways - I mean it isn't hard - just have someone answer your question the first time round is all I ask for. LOL!

Hope this helps with your decision...

I believe the last time Mr. Cutts commented on this topic was back in 2006 at Pubcon. He said:

“Rather than any real content, most of the pages were pay-per-click (PPC) parked pages, and when I checked the whois on them, they all had “whois privacy protection service” on them. That’s relatively unusual. Having lots of sites isn’t automatically bad, and having PPC sites isn’t automatically bad, and having whois privacy turned on isn’t automatically bad, but once you get several of these factors all together, you’re often talking about a very different type of webmaster than the fellow who just has a single site or so.”

What he was talking about were parked domains, not actual sites. And what is so unusual about hiding your personal information from the world? It doesn't always mean that you're doing something shady. Not all sites are run by corporations with a corporate address. In fact, most of the sites in the world are run by individuals who would like not to disclose their personal info to the world. I would think Google is smart enough to understand this.

Time value of money states that a dollar now is worth more than a dollar later. The fact that you are spending any time at all worrying about $1-2 a YEAR from now means you are wasting your time or your time is not valuable. Think big and don't get hung up over a buck or so or you will not succeed with your current mindset about money.

      I don't agree for a few reasons:

      1. If you can save a few bucks, why not? It's not like you're having to do extra work. The work is done for you here... this thread provides lists of registrars that offer free whois privacy. What time is being wasted??

      2. It takes very little time (seconds) to activate the whois privacy feature in a registrar account.

      3. If you are a domainer or someone with a large domain portfolio, it's not just a few bucks per year. Do the math if you're talking about hundreds or thousands of domains.

I generally agree with your attitude in regards to not getting hung up over a couple of bucks, but in this case, I don't.

        1. True, always good to save a few bucks but for every domain place that offers free whois, you now have to compare their domain pricing. Some are like $12 and some are like $9 soooooo its more than just who has free whois. Now we are talking about doing a little research which does take time.

        2. Nobody doubts that. Its practically automatic. Its all about researching though. He could have bought his domain earlier today but instead is starting a forum post and reading it all and will buy it tomorrow. So he definitely is spending some time on this.

        3. Completely accurate. I just assumed he wasn't since most people on here aren't.

Namecheap is reputable and I have been with them and happy. Personally for me, to spend any time searching for someone cheaper is a waste of my time. I know there is cheaper but then I have to examine customer support and spend time transferring my current domains. By the time I am done, I would need a check for like $200 to make it worthwhile. And that is my point.

Most people on WF severely undervalue their time and are willing to work for pennies which is ridiculous. Would you prepay your electric bill for a full year to save $5? That is the worst deal of all time but I guarantee someone on here thinks that's a good deal because it saves $5.

The thing is... most people stick to one registrar once they find it. Yes sure, it may take a little research to initially find a registrar, but that's the case with any service you look for.

Another thing to think about... when most people register a domain, they don't even think about whois info. It's only until later on, when they discover that their personal info is being disclosed to the public. That's when they start searching for a registrar with free whois privacy.

don't stick to just one.. never put all your eggs in one basket. We all saw what happened with Godaddy when they screwed up their DNS servers and millions of urls were offline.

    I'm using:
namesilo.com (also offering free privacy I believe; don't pin me on this though)
    namecheap.com
internetbs.com (I stopped using them a while because there was no way to pay them via Paypal which they got around eventually)

Most important to look for is 'renewal' prices that is where your real costs lie. Not in registering a new domain.
