How do you insert tracking codes into an email

I'm writing some email copy and would like to add tracking functionality. It's for someone who has his own admin system. It's very basic but it's run on his own website and he wouldn't like to change to Aweber or the like.

How can I insert tracking code into the emails so that he can check email open rate and keep track of how many clicked the links inside the email to go to his website?

Thanks,
Jackson

    1) If you don't send HTML emails, then you cannot check the open rate. If you publish HTML emails you can check it by using an invisible 1x1 image.

    2) You must know that then open rate never can be tracked accurately. If you need more details, let me know.

    3) As for the links from your email, use an ad tracker. Take care not to use an ad tracker that has its domain name blacklisted. Example of such ad tracker you should NOT use: ClickAudit.

Thanks for the Google tip slidsnake but it tends to show companies who offer services, so I wanted to avoid a 2-hour search.

    ezineads, thank you, much apreciated.

How does the 1x1 image method work? I'm not sure how that would record stats unless they clicked on it.

With an ad tracker, would the links be shortened like clickaudit (though I realise you recommend not to use them) as I need the actual site url to show once clicked through.

    Thanks,

polimedia explained you very well how the method works.

What I may add is that there are many other problems. For example, subscribers that are using a Gmail address have the images disabled by default. You will not be able to count them even if they open the email, unless they enable the image viewing.

Any ad tracker works like you want. Once someone clicks on the link, she or he is redirected to your actual site URL. So don't worry about this.

I recommended you not to use ClickAudit because their domain name is blacklisted and the spam filters will penalize your emails. However, you can use ClickAudit if you find a shortening service that will hide CLickAudit link. [TinyURL doesn't allow you to hide ClickAudit links. Look for another one.]
