Ebay is moving to 100% FREE listings!

Talk about a MASSIVE shift in their business model.

Wow.

The below just arrived in my inbox:

===============================

We're writing with some great news:

Starting April 19, you'll be able to list your items Auction-style FREE, at any start price, up to 50 listings a month. Plus you can add the Buy It Now option to these listings FREE to grab buyers in a hurry. Set the price you want and sell it fast! This is not a limited-time special but a change in eBay Standard fees to help you list more for FREE all the time--even those high ticket items! Pay only if your item sells.

Also, because we know buyers take into consideration the total cost of an item, also starting April 19, to encourage sellers to keep shipping costs low, the Final Value Fee will be applied to the total amount of the sale--including shipping.

=============================

This yet again changes the eBay game. I know many people
who jumped out because their fees were getting out of control
and eating up profit margins.

Now that you can list items for free and only pay when you
sell, this may open the doors WIDE OPEN in April (well, for
up to 50 listing a month, but still).

Interesting.

Hey that's awesome news! didn't know that - thanks for updating me.
I'll have to add it to my to do list and do something on ebay now.

reminds me of how Amazon just recently change their kindle commissions to 70% if you're selling kindle ebooks.

70% commission? Am I reading this right? One gets a 70% commission selling Kindles AND kindle Ebooks?

That is great news. I for one have products I know could generate a side income on Ebay, but never bothered with it due to listing fees etc. especially if I want to test new products.

    Now I can! : )

I think this is a good move, the internet has changes a lot since Ebay started and many sites have grown to compete, so this is a good move by Ebay, and one I think will work!

      Snap!

      Same as me!

Remember the golden days of Ebay when it was WORTH paying for a Featured listing?

      Used to get awesome traffic.

Will have to check this out again.

Maybe they're losing too many people to Bonanza  I know I pulled just about all of my listings from eBay due to all the fees; fees for this, fees for that, fees to list, final value fees. It was incredible! I mean, I don't mind paying fees, but they were getting ridiculous.

Bonanza and other stores like it - one fee, AFTER the item is sold. Free to list, no monthly costs like Etsy, and the final fee is a lot less than eBay. Maybe they caught wind of it??

Not sure about "Bonanza", but I'm sure because of the "Dan Patrick Show" on DirectTV promoting "Skoreit", that could be part of the reasoning why eBay is doing away w/their listing fees!

What they are doing is stopping all the scams that sell an item for $1 & the shipping is $37.

Ebay only profits from the scammers, until they catch on.

However, I am sure revenue was dropping due
to so many people jumping ship with the crazy
      fees.

To me, this is an extreme move - a massive
change in their business model, to make $
after an item sells instead of generating a
large part of their revenue from listing fees.

Is that just the listing fee? I assume they'll either keep or jack up the prices for adding images, pictures to the search results page etc. So really not that much cheaper. Not to mention a real kick in the teeth for people who sell furniture or computers or other very heavy items.

Not having a listing fee will bring in a lot of new customers for them who only sell something rarely.

That's how I see it too. eBay will never lower fees, ever. Now they want a % of shipping fees? Give me a break. This is exactly the kind of crap that led me to stop selling on eBay.

Yes, this will be good for people selling up to 50 products. If you are a powerseller and selling more than 50 products, you will still have to pay fees. This move is mainly for the small time guy trying to get in a couple of sales. All the other big players still have to pay fees. Nothing has really significantly changed.

One thing that is a major concern with me is customer service.

And I will also argue customer service shouldn't be necessary unless a company doesn't know (or care) about setting up processes correctly. It is VERY common to read about glitches in their "system" on a regular basis.

It is also true that none of the oBay price "reductions" have been anything more than the same type of ... hype ... we see in Internet Marketing with something being true for a very small proportion of the people actually using the product.

And couple of other things to consider:

    1) the growing prominence of PayPal in the company scheme of things.
    2) I'm not sure they have anyone left who actually gives a damn about sellers.

Obay is a spin machine looking for suc, er, sellers to donate more money to their company. Fool me once and it is your fault. Fool me twice and it is my fault.

I'm very much with kindsvater and his observation that this will mean price hikes for most sellers.

eBay knows that shipping rates are due to rise, and drastically so in accord with rising gas costs, postal expenses and other shipping extras such as Expedited Post here in Canada.

Once again, as it has been, and ever will be forever and ever amen, eBay screws the sellers. And promotes it as being a good thing.

I suppose this change works somewhat well when you'd just like to list a bunch of items that you're not really sure will sell (saving you any upfront listing fees in the process), but bear in mind that your final fees will probably end up being higher, as the ebay fees are going to apply to your shipping charges as well.

eBay has a history of doing exactly that - lower listing fees and tell everyone how great it is while they secretly raise final value fees to compensate. They have done this at least twice within the past few years.

This is just their latest scam.....look at the part which says that final value fees will be calculated on the total including shipping.....not only does this raise final value fees but it also is in effect saying that all sellers are dishonest with regard to shipping costs and must be "encouraged" (controlled). While this is certainly true in some cases, I believe that they are in the minority and that eBay simply does not want to put forth the effort to check on a case-by-case basis.

Better to sell your items elsewhere.....

I like the change... I don't mind paying extra fees when something sells.

However, I hate paying fees just to list.

Key point here is to sell items that you make a HUGE profit with and you really don't care if you have to give Ebay 10% or even 20% of the sell.

It would be just like an Affilaite making a sale.

I will take that deal all day long.

Look forward to testing it out.

Sadly this is not a good thing, it does nothing to compete with Amazon.com where their success was inspired by "sharing" in shipping costs, (super saver shipping) Genius, yet Ebay still has done nothing, to inspire a renewed affiliate program which has slid into the depths of hades,) If your interested in some factual information on just how bad the EPN program has failed over the last year, A Warning For Ebay Partner Network Affiliates

I pulled all my advertising websites promoting ebay and moved over to amazon at least there I can depend on a fair method of revenue sharing.

I hope that eventually the guy that ruined that program, (allegedly) will be fired.

Until then I do not bother with promoting them

Advice to all the people posting that they are going back to eBay now that it is free...

If you weren't making money when you had to pay up front, then chances are that you won't make money now that it's free. Instead of just going back, try and figure out what went wrong before and try and fix whatever problems you had.

What you say is true. However, I'll add, at least you won't lose money now.

To ones who think the OP and other posts are not being read...

Yes, I have read the entire OP. Yes I have read the post by Brian. And yes I still think it's a good thing for some sellers, including yours truly.

The ones I think it is the worst for are the sellers who charge $1 for the product and $15 Shipping and "Handling" when shipping is only a dollar or two.

This is nothing but a nice lil scam by Ebay with higher fee's... plus I wouldn't be surprised if they jack up their prices for their other options in a listing.

What makes this worse is all the people that think this will be free and now list items like a crazy mofo, so now a crowded marketplace will be even more crowded. Nice job Ebay lol.

Hmmm, another way for ebay to raise fees but put a spin on it to try to make it look like a good thing.

This change may help a few people who are just trying to sell a couple of thing out of their attic, but is going to cost the average seller more money. I am sure that ebay has run the numbers and know this is going to make them more money.

They figured out a way to stop the few sellers who were selling items for really cheap and putting in really high shipping costs as a way around paying ebay's fees. Plus now they get 9% of everyone's shipping costs.

This is a huge chunk of change. Just as an example, I checked my ebay fees over the last 2 months. I just sell a few collectibles on the side for a litte extra income. In the last 2 months I listed 20 items, 18 of which sold. I paid $59.03 in ebay fees. Under their new fee structure I would have paid 66.40.

Clearly ebay is not going to lose any money over this, it just encourages people to list more items which means more sales for ebay. This means a ton more money for them since they get the final value fees, plus all the extra paypal fees.

      just my $.02

They have been testing on and off for last year. Seem like they are going to do it permanently.

This is a catch, it is the first 50 listing. If you are part time ebayer, that would be a real great good news.

But ebay has multiple ways to make money from the listing, and that include charging you the paypal fees.

Don't forget ebay own paypal too

This is very telling, it appears that they've either hit a plateau or are experiencing a decline in listings, and this is probably intended to elicit new interest and boost sellers' listings on there, at least for the short term.

    ===============================

    =============================

    Thats awesome!

Whoever thinks this is "great", is exactly the type eBay is targeting. They really did a good job turning something that will actually INCREASE your listing fees, into something that sounds good.

IE: "He passed away to a better place" VS. "He's dead! Got hit by a train and decapitated into thousands of pieces!".

The totality of this change is a move to increase their profits. NOT yours.

SUMMARY: "We've just made a change that will increase sellers fees."

eBay got so greedy and constantly increased fees to the point they drove themselves out of the market compared to if they just made subtle increases every few years and kept their sellers happy.

They treated a lot of sellers like they didn't need them and now look... They really drove their business into the ground and you know what... It looks good on them!

Now that you got the idea... PRESS PLAY

Seems like the opposite would happen. Calculate actual shipping charges and increase by the amount necessary to cover Ebays percentage. Which sellers are just gonna absorb this additional cost themselves?

Doesn't that raise the shipping costs for the buyer?

Shipping costs are skyrocketing. I just sent a 2 pound prioity mail package from Calif to North Carolina -- over $9.
Try shipping a 20 or fifty pount item vial UPS. OUCH!!
Ebay has to be making a lot more money with this change.

I made my full time living on ebay from 1998 thrhough 2008. Now I just dabble. Even dabbling, I see this as another killer for sellers.

This 50 "free" listings is only if you DO NOT have an ebay store. Most regular sellers have stores. Ebay was offering the first 100 listing free for non-store sellers.

Ebay is not giving sellers anything. They are about bottom line and making more money, not less.

I have been selling on Ebay for 6 years.
Recently sellers where putting in their descriptions they where charging higher shipping fees so buyers wouldn't bid as high so as to keep there sellers fees down.

They did not even think that in doing so,Ebay would change something again.
So now this has happened. This is another move for Ebay to rip us off and make more money. Some people just do not get it.

I probably wont sell on there anymore now.Ill look for other places.
Everyone in the US needs to boycott Ebay untill they change there plicys back to the way they where 3 years ago at least,

Look at Paypal (Ebay company). They get $0.35 fixed fee + 1,9% of the final price for every product sold that is paid with Paypal.
I would not be surprised if they charge fees in the future every time you login into your Paypal

5 years from now, Ebay will be a big loser if they continue to be the seller-enemy, Amazon will be the king.

The eBay fees have always been annoying, but even with them, the competition on eBay has become so tough. I can imagine it becoming a lot tougher if anyone can list any items for free! People are already selling a lot of stuff at prices so low that even if I were to buy and sell wholesale stock, I would make little to no money it seems. I think many sellers are fine with low margins, which makes it difficult for others who want to make a living on eBay.

Hi Casper: I agree 100%!! I have been selling on eBay for 10 years. When I first started I was a Gold Power Seller and also Top Seller in my Category for 5 years straight. Then all of a sudden things went south because just as you said people started selling stuff for ridiculous prices. They think they are doing good and out beating the competition. But Really all it does is end up killing the market that you're trying to dominate. So I got out that game and now only sell on there on occasion. It's not like it used to be profit wise. Plus I learned along time ago, I could make WAYYYYY more profit selling my products on my own site via internet marketing! And not have to pay anyone fees that total 4 mortgages LOL!

I see this as nothing but a bad thing. What many sellers seem to forget is customers don't come for free. Premium rents in brick and mortar stores (as well as all the other high costs that go with it) aren't premium prices just because of location and the "image" that goes with owning store in such places. They are premium rents because they are sought after, and they are sought after purely because they are rammed packed with buying customers / passing trade. You pay for the potential business and nothing else.

eBay is a premium online shopping centre. They give us massive amounts of potential business for what's basically a pittance. If you moan about the fees then you are doing something very wrong, plain and simple. Every item you sell online or offline comes with overheads attached that should be included in your pricing.

Those that moan and whinge about eBay fees have no idea what they are doing, sorry but it's that simple. I used to be of the same mentality and it was detrimental to everything I done in business. If you were selling the same items in a brick and mortar store in a premium location (which eBay is), then your cost per sale would be many times higher than your cost per sale on eBay.

Making the listings free will devalue the quality of that site dramatically. It already has it's fair share of cr*p on there but this will get much worse.

Lee, I agree with you somewhat but on the same hand if you own a brick and mortar store in a prime location rent is typically anywhere from $2000 - $4000 per month - I know because I have friends who own a few locations. However, the difference is there's a cap to your rental fee. Whereas on eBay - there is no cap! It has nothing to do with someone not knowing what they are doing because obviously if your paying $4000 a month in eBay you must be doing something RIGHT to sell that type of volume that would yield those types of fees. Keep in mind if you are selling $20,000 per month on eBay - and I said selling, not having dead auctions that don't sell - then your fees are going to be high as crap and there is no cap to that. Whereas in a brick n mortar store you can sell $20,000, $30,000 or $40,000 per month and your rent would still be the same. I'm not saying listing should be free - but the fees should be more fair for high volume sellers. You don't even pay those kind of monthly fees for a merchant account. That's why now I mostly sell through my website and don't regret it one bit. I'm making way more money then I ever would selling through ebay. Not to mention the flea market mentality that the eBay buyers have - always wanting something for nothing!

Three years ago I would be mostly agreeing with you. If you've been out of the eBay loop for a while then you may have missed the last major price changes. When it was costing £2 - £3 per listing for ten days, it was a lot harder to make money. Still possible but you really had to keep your eye on the ball and cheap items with small profits were much harder because all your profits were eaten up by unsold listings. But the game changed drastically when the new pricing was introduced a few years ago.

Everyone moaned like crazy because of the 10% final value fees. All those that moaned missed the bigger opportunity, while the minority that see the new potential, milked it.

Up until this point, cheap items were very difficult to make money on and everything was hit and miss. You couldn't measure anything because there was no way of predicting what your costs would be from one week to the next. The new pricing changed that drastically, for the better, and allowed us to use eBay much more like a real business with some form of measurability and predictabilty. Most people moaned and whinged because they simply didn't understand the basics of costing, optimising and refining, and most still don't.

When you run a brick and mortar business in a premium location, square / cubed foot becomes a big pricing factor. Every item you sell has a far greater 'real world' cost than what you pay for it, and the rents are capped only in proportion to your square footage, i.e., you can only carry limited stock before your costs go up.

As your stock increases and you need bigger premises, you are faced with much bigger overheads (rent, rates, insurance, staff) all at a premium price if you want to remain in a premium location. All of this adds significantly to the cost of your inventory. If half of your stock moves slowly then this adds accordingly to the real cost of every product you are selling. Profit from the fast moving stuff has to subsidise storage costs for the slower moving stuff. In premium stores this is kept to a minimum, it's why they throw stuff out or sell at a loss when it moves too slowly, the main reason being to free up valuable space. Every square foot counts and eats money.

When you are selling on eBay, you are putting your stuff in front of a huge amount of potential buyers. eBay provides us with the customers, we pay for the privilege, a fair trade for such a huge amount of potential buyers. For us to put our inventory in front of those buyers, the overall cost/overhead per product is ridiculously cheap. We still need storage space and staff and insurance etc. but for nowhere near the cost of running our business from a prime location (which incidentally can be a hell of a lot more than the $2 - $4k rent if you want the same amount of potential customers that eBay offer).

If we use eBay properly then we can run the business from cheap premises with cheap overheads but still be getting premium traffic. The cost per sale still works out far cheaper. Of course there are other factors for and against eBay vs the high street but generally speaking, if you can't make money from eBay then you are doing it wrong and it's easy to burn money quickly.

Most sellers on there are running everything hit and miss. They think price is everything (which it isn't) and all you need to do is keep listing items for sale and make money. No business is that simple and you can't afford to keep throwing mud at the wall whether you sell online or in the high street. Everything has to be optimised, tested and monitored. It's our job to make it profitable by making it work.

The free listings are going to devalue the place and make things much more difficult. It will also force prices down because the average seller will believe that's the only way to compete among the extra noise (and worthless cr*p) that free listings will naturally attract. Most sellers will follow suit and drop prices or bail out, but none of them will blame the free listings as the cause, they'll just say it's all eBay's fault for jacking the final value fees. They will forget that final value fees only happen after a sale has been made, in reality, they already failed before selling anything.

Still possible but you really had to keep your eye on the ball and cheap items with small profits were much harder because all your profits were eaten up by unsold listings. But the game changed drastically when the new pricing was introduced a few years ago.
Pricing, per se, is NOT the only consideration when selling, and all the people actually in IM should know this.

In the case of oBay, they have set the sellers up for failure unless they are doing "sufficient" volume to absorb the other factors ... like DSRs, ludicrous return policies, Best Match, Top Rate Seller, etc.

And of course (subject to personal judgement) the inept management who appear to care less about destroying the community that built it than putting money in THEIR pockets.

As for boycotts, those have been mentioned since sometime in the 1990s everytime oBay did something stupid ... banning gun sales, banning teachers editions of text books, banning ivory, banning Tiffany items regardless of if they were THE Tiffany, ignoring seller complaints, "promoting" counterfeit items, etc., etc., etc.

We (the former eBay community before it became oBay) did a LOT of word of mouth advertising. There was an excitement whenever we talked about eBay, and that translated into traffic and sales. BTW, I started on the site in 1997 at the time it changed from AW (AuctionWeb) to eBay.

Newbies don't know and probably don't care about the history, or a time when it was a tremendous and helpful community of buyers and sellers.

Hmmm, maybe like it was when adwords was both cheap and effective for getting traffic .

Well I must say you have some very valid points on the cost analysis. I have not been out of the eBay loop - but it is no longer my main business - I run auctions on a regular basis but no where near the level I used to. I think too that its my category - it was always a hard one to be in. After reading through all the post and your comments as well you may have a valid point that Free Listings may devalue ebay and make it more difficult for serious sellers to stay a float when people start coming in with ridiculous prices - I can surely see that happening. That's why eBay Live was so nice because it gave top sellers a chance to meet and participate in on discussions such as this. I guess we'll see what happens and worse case they can always change it back but the damage may already be done by that time.

Ebay put me out of business when they eliminated downloadable products. I promised that no one company would ever have that kind of control over my income again.

So while I'll occasionally buy at Ebay - and may even sell an item or two in the future, it will never be a part of my income strategy.

    It was a valuable lesson.

Looks like good news for me also. I use to sell fishing equipment on ebay and did so for years. The fees were killing me so I quit. I would sell about half to 3/4's of my monthly listing but still had to pay listing fees. Now I won't have to pay for what doesn't sell, that's a good thing.

With fair shipping charges the fees for shipping will not be that much. A little more than the old listing fee but the savings will outweigh the cost.

Oh Yea, I read every post in this thread and still see it as a good thing.

I think its a little too late for this move for eBay. They have lost so much seller due to their increase initial fees and after sales fees. It was really ridiculous. But, its still a great website to buy many things for affordable price and to find unique items that is available anywhere else.

Yes, Amazon is great and the FBA program
is awesome. I even use Fulfilment by Amazon
for some of my Ebay products

And yes, the Ebay fees are very high, but so
are Amazons' fees (for some products even much
much higher). You pay fees and you buy traffic.
In my opinion the traffic that you get for these fees
is too cheap. You can list a product and sell it in an instant!

If the fees are too high for you, then leave Ebay
and decide to sell on your website. You can make that
decision if you want, but note that search engine traffic
is not free. You have to do great SEO if you want to
compete and that will also cost you a lot.

Ebay will get you a lot of buyers if you know how to do
business right. And even with these fees you can make
great profit if you have a solid business structure. At the
end, only those with a solid business foundation will win
    this competitive game

I agree with parts of this - if you are paying fees and not making money with Ebay i.e your products are not selling - free listings are not going to help you much.

I suppose you won't lose money however.

You pay fees and buy traffic is one way of doing it - the quickest way.

However nearly all my websites are optimized through SEO and I didn't pay a cent for it.

If you are not a fan of paid advertising and you are willing to work your socks off learning SEO might be the way to go...

The guys at eBay knows what they are doing and this shows that they will be at the top of that niche for several years to come.

Many businesses start very smoothly the way eBay began but will run out of ideas or will become stagnant along the line but eBay has proved that they are ready to change with the time.

They are just telling their competitors that there is no room at the top.

This is a brilliant news for all!

Ebay is courting new sellers of low priced items. The high ticket item sellers are going to get raked over the coals. Final value fee ON SHIPPING WTF????.

Searching Ebay and sorting through all the garbage listings is going to become very tedious. I also expect them to crank down on linking to other sites, and for ads to become more intrusive. Affiliates shouldn't get excited, your affiliate revenue will drop because of this. You're going to have to send them 5 times as much targeted traffic to maintain the same revenues.

This is perhaps the beginnings of Ebay's death throws. They are too overbloated and expensive to survive in the long run. Let's see who rises up to replace them with a current web 2.0/social business model.

The flip side is you'll now sadly have to fight to
even be seen due to the sheer absurd volume
of utter crap listings that are going to appear.

Spam versions of the same product 1000x

not remove them, it has the potential to backfire.

Uhhh...maybe I'm missing something? Why is everyone excited? I've sold on eBay for years and this change is an INCREASE in fees. They are calculating your final sale fee with SHIPPING included. So if you sell a heavy item for $10 with $40 shipping you are paying the eBay final value fee on $50 as opposed to the former $10. At say 15% that would be a $7.50 commission to eBay instead of the previous $1.50? Should I be exited over that? Besides, the former policy was 100 free listings as long as they started under .99. Can't say I'm as exited as everyone else seems to be with this change. I think overall it will drive many sellers away from eBay. Of course, that seems to happen with every policy change they make.

Yeah, people don't understand how bad this actually IS.

If you sell something for $9.99 + $4.99 shipping, you were only paying final value fees on the $9.99 - now you are being taxed on the full $14.98.

This is going to kill the $.99 - $24.99 market which is the largest on eBay

This was mostly aimed towards the huge amount of Asian sellers who were selling items for $4.99 + $14.99 shipping, but completely screwing everyone else over in the process.

There is absolutely no benefit to anyone but a wealthy corporation strong arming little people into offering free shipping (and less profit) so their company can better stand toe to toe against Amazon.

Yes, beyond that, the ebay Partner network, is allegedly, down the toilet, for example, this past week, I had a 300.00 sale, before they changed the sales metric my commission would have been around 12 to 30 bucks, now, with the new and improved changes ebay made, my commission is $1.82 cents, on a $300.00 sale, sort of just is not really worth promoting ebay, anymore.

Just makes you wonder, what is up with, the entire ebay program these days, as a member since 1999 what I see happening at ebay is a tragedy.

This isn't necessarily a good thing. It actually means sellers will start losing money, especially if they make low-dollar sales and end up having to pay a fee on the shipping portion of the total as well. That means you end up taking money out of your "sale," whether you paid a listing fee or not.
