People Are Unfollowing Me Faster Than Following!

I had a question about following and unfollowing on Twitter.

I just got on Twitter and started out by following the handful of people I was familiar with already and figured it would be good to follow. I got a handful of people following me in the process, but I didn't follow any of them back.

I send out good tweets, one per day, linking to good content in my niche, but I guess I can't expect anyone to care about that at this level when I'm just in the double digits of followers.

And I guess that I should be following everyone who follows me, at least in the beginning?

Question... Do you use the hash mark to id your niches? I did this the other day, I haven't really been effective at twitter marketing, on two posts and in one hour added 15 followers. Don't take me as an example but the was my limited experience. That and adding niche keywords to my profile.

You could use Twiends to get good followers. It's free to use and it works great. They also have a great selection of "Credits" Packages you can buy to get a Massive amount of QUALITY followers which won't unfollow you right after you constantly.

    Thanks for the tips guys!

Awhile back I read a post from someone with tons of followers who advised you to immediately follow anyone who follows you first, and you should follow new people who haven't followed you yet but to unfollow them if they don't follow you back shortly.

This is all good and well, but the person who said this has tons of followers, yet they only have a handful of people whom they follow. It's like a 1 to 1000 ratio.

So is the real key to follow everyone in the early days of your blog and twitter profile when you're still unknown, then you can start dropping people once you're developing a serious authoritative name in your niche for yourself?

You're saying write #greenenergy if I'm targeting green energy. Yeah I do that but some of my keywords are like 3 or 4 words long, and I doubt that anyone is searching for something like #potatosouprecipes. So I don't know the best way to go about that.

Why would you want to follow anyone whose tweets do not interest you?

And vice versa, why would you want anyone to follow you who does not want to follow you?

I follow about 1500 people. Nearly 5000 follow me.

I never auto-follow anyone following me. I am afraid to let marketers pollute my timeline with trash. Nevertheless, I primarily only follow marketers -- marketers who offer real value to me.

Twiends is good, and worth using. I have been membered at Twiends for about 4 days, and I have picked up 400 new followers in that time.

Yes, I did purchase credits in the system, so that helps me attract more people. Those who like what I tweet will stay. Those who don't like what I tweet can and should move on.

I set up an auto-follow when I first signed up to Twitter, so if someone follows me, I automatically follow them back... after getting 10,000 followers I realized that over 90% of them are not "people". Those are just accounts that post spam of sort, mostly and do not care about what you post. They simply don't read what's on twitter... so it's really useless to have all those "followers".

I'll give Twiends a look, thanks for the advice. I guess I would just do it for social proof so that other people will think I have something interesting to say and will actually give me a chance. I don't like that that may be the reality of what is necessary but might be what is required until I get a lot of followers and can afford to unfollow the useless accounts.

BTW, do you guys use Twiends for other platforms like YouTube or Facebook?

        I don't.

I keep FaceBook mostly for local friends and family.

You need to tweet more than once a day to engage your followers. Go into hashtags that are in your niche and respond to people with an intelligent response with no link. Do this to 25-50 people a day and your following will stabilize. Twitter right now is about a quality following not quantity. Do 9 conversational tweets to every tweet with a link. With some steady work you can get 500 quality followers in a month and with word of mouth(retweets) you can get to 2000 in 2 months. You'll get targeted traffic this way instead of talking into the wind.

Twitter is getting overloaded with bot accounts and the follower blaster accounts that the marketing companies are using to sell people "500 followers instantly" type services. Work on real people and your twitter campaign will be a success.

    Best wishes

Two things helped me to keep my twitter followers are :

      1. I'll send a freebie to all those who follows me. (Use socialoomph for automating it). In my case, it is a free ebook that I have written. It will let them know more about me.

      2. Only tweet high quality content (I don't believe in quantity here). You don't want to tweet only about your articles, but also give small tips that helps them in any way.

As others have indicated, you don't want to follow everyone who follows you. Many of those who do initiate a follow are promoters and bots. Very often the promotion is unrelated to your niche and a a large number are concerned with IM services and making money online (MMO).

Of those that approach me, I'd probably follow back about 10% as the others I expect would not see my messages or what they send is of no interest to me.

Twitter is more about the quality of your following in term of your niche rather than grabbing a large number of followers that are not interested in your messages.

Also, don't just send links to pages on various websites. Try to also offer useful tips that are self-contained within the message. You'll be appreciated more.

  • The secret to maintaining followers and getting new ones is to only tweet when you have something important to say. Otherwise you are simply clogging up people's twitter accounts with spam and they will unfollow you. No one will unfollow you while you aren't tweeting.

Oh My!! I'm sorry to hear that. Perhaps you are marketing too heavily?? Ask your followers specific questions and tell them you are here for them. Get them involved in what you're doing, but ask them what they like or don't like and then deliver the goods. I've been watching patterns on Twitter and it seems as though people on youtube have a lot more success with Twitter. They even post videos asking people to put questions on their Twitter. This encourages people to visit Twitter and youtube videos. Ask them what they like, don't like etc.... I hope this helps. Don't spam your followers. Just give them what they want.

I used software for a while on twitter and it got me up to over 7000 followers. But I didn't get much traffic from it.

All you get are other marketers, doing the same thing with that kind of following.

I found the best way to get real targeted people, was to search for conversations in your niche and chime in.

Question type tweets are good for that, if you can answer it.

Your followers don't agree. Whenever someone unfollows you, it's because they don't think you're worth following. This is usually because of whatever you most recently tweeted.

Sometimes it is because you didn't follow them back, but honestly, those people aren't really your followers anyway. Don't encourage them. Do you think celebrities follow everyone else back? Hell no.

Your audience will self-select over time. Just keep saying what you want to say, only following whom you want to follow, and you'll gradually accumulate people who want to hear from you.

Im gonna get slated here but my approach to twitter is not to narrow down to my niche! WTF people may say! I use Twitter as part of alot bigger picture in the idea that "everyone is a buyer". I suppose this is a niche in a way. I target everyone. If people could access ways to make money, i know i would take it? Everyone chases money no matter how you look at it. Never assume someone doesnt want to buy off you just because they dont lie in a particular niche. Theres a hell of alot of crossover between niches.

Sure there are a lot of cross-over niches, and you can find cross-over customers...

You may say that everyone wants to make money, but the truth is that you are wrong.

How would anyone live with "zero" money? I see what you are saying, but signup and referrals really do speak for themselves . This theory is backed by many people earning 6 figure months with this philosophy, so its hard to argue against it. Although i do agree with you that targeting is another great method. Just different

Everyone must earn money to pay the bills, true.

But not everyone online is looking for a money-making opp.

Whether you want to admit it or not, you are targeting people with your tweets.

And the people following you are in the MMO niche.

I can point you to 100 people, without thinking about it, who would unfollow you the first time they saw you pitching a MMO tweet. And that is just people that I know off the Internet.

MMO-seekers are a special breed of people. They are the in-betweeners.

MMO-seekers are looking for an opportunity to make money online, because they are not satisfied with their earnings. They are also people who have yet to figure out how to make money online.
          1. There are people who are satisfied with their lives to the point that they don't go online to find out how to make money.
          2. And there are people who already have a good business model, and they would consider another MMO to be a distraction to their goals.

Of those people I know in the physical world, my brother is a MMO-seeker. My sister and I are in group #2. Everyone else I know is in group #1.

So is "everyone" seeking what you have? No.

Agree with all your points tpw! However i just said my mindset is that everyones a buyer, not that every is actually a buyer! This is impossible. It just works for me. Ive trialed a few things with twitter. This method paid of pretty well. I think i got around 12 referrals in a week for a Backlink product. My retention is really good too. Mind you i dont just tweet about a niche. I like to tweet about current affairs etc. Seems to keep people interested in and around the real aims. I currently get around 1000 followers per week roughly. Not many of those leave. I create a brand around myself, and then filter down the funnel like i said before. Seems to be a good part of a multi component approach. All interesting stuff anyways

Rule #1 - NO AUTOMATION!!! Excluding sending an automated "thanks for following" message, but make sure that they know its automated

Rule #2 - Connect with your followers. Ask what they want, and deliver what they want. Ask questions, encourage discussion, make sure that they know that you are human, and that you are at their disposal. @reply them as much as possible, and have real conversations with them.

Rule #3 - Only follow those who are of interest to you. Autofollows are worthless. You can have 50 followers, and you will get more interaction than you ever will from 30,000 autofollows.

Rule #4 - Break your content up. Send a few links here and there, and talk to your followers here and there. Look for an even distribution.

As a sidenote, I have around 370 or so followers on my personal account, and I dont really focus on getting more followers. I just do what I do, and I can have a conversation with my followers every day. It's called "Social Media" for a very good reason, and having said that, you can assume that people are on "Social Media" because they want to be "Social". They aren't on there because they want to click the links that you send to them. They want to get to know you, and have a conversation with you.

    Hope that helps.

Just like what the other folks told yah I think your followers are not interested in what you tweet or whatever your niche might be. Try to talk about other stuff as well that your followers can relate with.
