Is it possible to move a forum to a new domain?

I have only just started my forum so it's new and won't be overly difficult to start from scratch and set it all up again. But just wondering if it is possible to transfer it to a new domain and if that is very difficult to do?

Some great warriors here will help you, but would outsource it.

Not at all difficult. It is just like moving any site. However you will have to change the settings of the forum and change the domain name. Changing the domain name now depends on the script you are using for your forum.

No need to outsource. Anyone can do the download and upload thing. I am sure you know how to move the database.

In case you are using vbulletin: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...another-domain

In case you are using phpbb: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewt...f=46&t=2115616

    Solution 2:

Install forum freshly on new domain. Go to phpmyadmin, completely empty your database. Run the backup sql file of your old forum and everything should be done automatically. Make sure that you move the uplaods or images folder to the new domain in which users have uploaded pictures or attachments.

I'm using SMF forums. It's just new so there are no images or anything. Wouldn't the backup have the old domain in it though?

Since I didn't notice you saying it, if you are simply changing domain and not the hosting provider, you can always ask their customer support to point the new domain to your current hosting account.

From my experience. No. Even if there is, you can always replace it using dreamweaver or similar which offers batch text replace.

This could make your life easier.
How do I move my SMF board to a different host?

if you can't follow the above official steps, the only remaining option for you is to outsource it by paying someone here or some cheap programmer from freelancer.com.

Sometimes if you ask your new host real nice they'll move that stuff for you. It can't hurt to ask at least.

Oh wow that looks quite technical!

The forum is brand new, in fact I only have one member other than myself so far so I'm thinking perhaps it might be easier to just start from scratch

yes you can, just send a massmail to your members informing them that you are moving to another domain/host. It's been 5 years since I managed all of these forums and I am not really updated with the latest updates. Forums are the first websites I ran way back 2002 and I think I sold more than a dozen Vbulletin established forums and the old phpbb forums.

I will go with Neil's suggestion. Create new forum and email that one member to join your new forum

The easy way Sheryl is to start a new forum from scratch while you only have 1 member.

We used the same script for a forum but we received so much spam & posts we could not allow to be seen it was a full time job trying to control it. In the end we just we deleted the forum so be very careful and make sure all security options are activated.
