What Is The Biggest Mistake You Make As A Newbie??

I thought this would be a great thread to help those newbies out there and those struggling to make some coin online.

I must say we have all made mistakes, but dang! I made some real hum-dingers when i first started online.

But the biggest mistake I made when starting is not creating an email list. When I did this, my whole business changed, I was making more money consistantly and a whole world of opportunity opened up soon after.

I use to come in here and hear people talking about having an email list, but I just kept putting it off. What a moron I was LOL.

What is your major screw up as a newbie???

Because i followed 2 simple guidelines

    Never buy info, only software
Never invest to much time in a method before checking if it works, on a small scale.

I wasted time on MLM. After many hours of work everyday for 12 months, I made less than $200. If I had spend those time learning real IM, I would have been a full time marketer by now. Not trying to bash anyone who is into MLM and all, just saying this business model is not for me.

My second biggest mistake was believe in quick cash systems. So I got into PTC, HYIP, autosurf and invested my money in them. I got scammed by all three......TWICE >_<

I second the motion but that was 5 years ago for me. Now MLM is not a good business model in this day and age. The only people making a wad of cash are the owners with a snake oil product.

Ha ha same for me i have bought well over 50 domian names over 4 years and the first 10 or 15 were bought before i even new what SEO was, so you can imagine the crappy sounding names i bought myself, thinking at the time that they were great names.

I spent way to much money on courses and the next big launch, I joined the warrior forum in 2006 and didn't come back for almost a year! If i had just taken the advice from these forums and stopped looking for fast cash i would have saved myself alot of money.

So my biggest mistake...running after one opportunity after the next and not building a real business.

I'm with you my friend....wasted too much time chasing the rainbow. My advice, stick with something that works, don't get caught up in the sales hype.

I know, yeah, but what works?

    My biggest mistake?

Not being a member of the Warrior Forum sooner.

I have spent at least $300 on products about internet marketing before joining. Had I known about the War Room membership I would have saved a whole lot.

And the rest of the stuff I bought? All got deleted with no hope of recovering them (my laptop crashed that I had no other choice but to reformat the damn thing).

Gosh, there are many when you're starting out.

    1. Becoming overwhelmed which leads to problem 2...
    2. Procrastinating because you're overwhelmed.
    3. Buying more things than you need when you don't have to.
    4. Being so concerned about being perfect before jumping in and doing anything that you don't jump in at all.
    5. Trying to implement too many things all at once.
    6. Trying to follow too many strategies all at once.

    That's it for now lol.

    Good thread.

I have to agree with you there. Alot of warrior special offers are made up of Private label rights content, they have simply replaced the signature with there name and slapped on a killer sales page.

This doesnt go for all warriors but a good handfull at least.

One of the many mistakes that I made in the beginning, which I still make mistakes but not as big and not as many, is not looking for references.

And of course one of the best references to validate or even contemplating a purchase is right here at the Warrior Forum.

Either people already have an opinion or there are reviews made and that has helped me a ton in figuring out on whether or not to pursue a new technique/software.

People here are savvy marketers and have a sense for software, and knowing what ebooks deliver and which ones do not.

I have to admit I made many mistakes when I started online. But I think the biggest mistake was to spend money in buying leads. I just don't believe in that marketing concept because the leads will be overly priced and they won't know who you are. most of the time it will only waste your time trying to contact them and probably not get anywhere because of the quality. Even the so-called 'good' leads can never be guaranteed because end of the day they are people who are probably pitched different businesses or products. They may have already heard from your competitors.

So I always say generate your own leads. Build a connection and network with them. A much smarter way of running your business

    What a great topic!

I am still very new and haven't quite decided what path I want to go down yet.

I know (and all my 'know' comes from massive amounts of reading, mostly here), that I will have to choose a single business plan and focus entirely on that plan.

From there is where I would expect to have a much better idea of my strengths and weaknesses and my likes and dislikes.

I would then be able to develop a new business plan and then just run with it expecting nothing but success.

I'm hoping that time comes soon.

    Good Luck to all.

    Joe

Forgot to add my Biggest Mistake: I didn't quite take in and focus on all of the things I was reading at first and so I wasted alot of time having to find and go over the same things again.

The biggest mistake a newbie can make is to believe that making money online is very simple. If you don’t sell the right products to the right audience, you’ll never make a cent, but only spend and spend, trying to find a magical way to make your impossible dream become true.

Only because the internet gives you so many alternatives, this doesn’t mean that you’ll make money by selling whatever you may desire, and however you may feel like. You have to learn how to proceed. Be very patient if you are a newbie, and care about studying internet marketing. You can have many free lessons at the Warrior forum, and at many other very interesting forums. Don’t spend money to learn how to make money. Spend your money only when you’ll use it as in investment to make more money.

There are many interesting free sources, like Squidoo lenses, that can teach you the basics, and you can also make some money with them, while learning internet marketing. If you are a good writer, create also Hub pages, and make more money this way, without spending a cent. Never act before creating a smart business plan if you want to guarantee your success.

However, be aware that you always have to test and keep testing your results. What works for many other people may not work for your business. You have to discover how to build your business after learning many different marketing strategies and knowing very well what to do. Everything takes time, money, and effort. So, be prepared to face a battle online.

      Great thread!

My biggest mistake was churning out a website, and then wanting to make the next website before adequately promoting/building links to the first site. I'd always get new ideas and new domains and want to start on another project before fully fleshing-out the one I just launched.

Remember: anyone can build (or have built) a website. But only a VERY select few know how to optimize, promote, and drive traffic. That's the hard part.

Other mistakes to avoid as a rookie:

      1. Don't expect instant results. Traffic takes time. Sites you launch right now aren't going to show significant results (or profit) for months. Keep that in mind.

      2. Don't give up. Getting discouraged over the fact you're "not making any money" is the #1 reason people can't hack it as an affiliate marketer. And that's good news for the rest of us who are willing to stick it out, put in the extra effort, and reap the long-term benefits.

      3. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Because someone could smack that basket right out of your hand at any time. Just ask Ezine.

    from our mistakes, right?

you will succeed at the end. At least, this is what I believe.

Great thread. Lots of good stuff in here.

I'll just a list a few mistakes so I don't take up too much room...

      1. I tried not to make any mistakes. Ended up over-thinking, spending way too much time trying to create the perfect, complete system with multiple products, all optimized for every stage of the sales funnel etc. etc. Think about what you're doing, but don't try to do everything just right the first time.

      2. Not being yourself. This is an easy trap when you are trying to do niche marketing. If you want to be truly successful, you need a niche that you can get involved in. If you hate dogs, then don't go for dog training. There is probably a niche somewhere for dog haters . If you try to sound like someone you are not, and talk about things you have no interest in, then not only will you fail to capture any audience, let alone sales, but you are going to be miserable. Remember that awesome sales page that made you buy your first course? Its all about freedom, not building a new cage for yourself.

Sorry, forgot to add this one - I think its important, and something to watch out for.

        3. Not tracking my expenses and having a budget!
When you're buying $10 WSO here, and $35 software there, it can very quickly add up at the beginning. Sure, its an investment into your new business, but this is a BUSINESS! Budget for information products, software, etc. Otherwise you are just going to rack up a nice big credit card bill before you make a dime.

My biggest mistake? As others have shared, I have made many:

    - Bought too many products
    - Got completely overwhelmed with information
    - Procrastinated
    - Started many projects but didn't see them through

The biggest mistake? Not following one consistent system.

There are many ways to make money online. Just choose the one that feels right for you, and do it and nothing else until you feel you have taken it as far as it can go. Then push it a little further.

This is quite common, the worst thing for people to do is buy book after book, and read and read and then realise by the end of teh week, they have done absolutly nothing with the info they have floating around in thier mind.

I made nothing in that way .. now I understand what I am doing as I educated myself about online business, I made a list and I'm very confident I'm on the right way .. Finally !!

Lack of focus is the biggest killer for any business. Everyone knows this. Newbies are most prone to it and experts realise it's the most important aspect of any successful business person!

I'm still a "newbie", as people like to call it.

Didn't invest a thing, only gain a lot of information by the WF . I'm so glad I joined it, I'm sure this WASN'T a mistake at all!

Hopefully I will launch my first product soon, still thinking of what it should be (guess it will be about Traffic, think that is the biggest problem for everyone).. Has someone got some tips for me for launching a product?

Do a hell of a lot of research, put something together thats unique and overall delivers quality. Then you will be fine!

Some of the mistakes I've made:

    1) Jumping from one thing to another before it has a chance to work.
    2) Focusing on the money making aspect, instead of giving real value to people.
    3) Not building a list is probably another mistake I'm making, but it's something I'm putting off til later. LOL

I's say don't chase the next big dream. Work on your passion and turn it into something profitable or develop a product or service that you are passionate about.

    Hey,

Your post made me laugh, but I'm glad you figured that one out sooner or later haha. It's funny what you look back on and say "oh my God, how did I overlook that" or "how did i think what I was doing was right?"

But I'd have to say one of my biggest screw ups was just not taking action for about 3 months. I was in "learn everything" mode, and I actually left my job because I thought "oh I know I'll be making money in 3 months." Well I blew my reserves, and thought to myself "why the heck haven't I made any money?" Like I said it's hilarious the things you overlook, but I realized IT'S BECAUSE I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING but digest information.

Nonetheless I began to generate leads to an LCP and I had an opt-in there and I began building my list, and the rest is history.

We would have been a good tandem together as newbies hahahha. You gotta laugh you know, because it demonstrates how much progress we've made and it's another story in the book.

    Take care,

    Bobby Freiler

I am known in here for a being a list builiding whore.

      lol.

Funny but that is the single thing that changed my business. I was literally making a few dollars a week until I built a list and started communicated.

I have helped a few warriors do the same. I still do not know why me and others thought not having a list does not matter. Well it does, and why do you think JV's work so well, cause you are using someone else's list. It is called leverage.

I dare you to try to build a list in this IM game, the results will actually alarm u and you will be wondering what the hell you were doing and why you didnt start doing it ages ago.

Over analyzing and then putting off my plans out of fear. Fear of success, fear of failure? Maybe a little of both.

But, I've realized that if you want it bad enough, you can't let anything stop you from achieving your goals...not even yourself.

Perfectionist mindset. Even until now i still have it, but i have a process to deal with it!

And this lead in to another problem, which is to never read information. DO information, be willing to deal with that "ugly" state of your work in the beginning. Thats how we learn in IM.

And never fully outsource everything before trying out the tasks yourself to get a feel of it. Even 4 hour work week asked you to do it yourself the first 3 months before outsourcing. (thou most of the book is focused on the 4hww) hahaa

    thanks

My biggest problem was signing up on for people's email lists to get "free" info, eventually it wastes lots and lots of time, I kept on gathering new info and never had time to put it to use!

My biggest mistakes are lack of focus - buying courses and not being able to stick to one at a time - even though my mentor keeps trying to drag me back on track!! I've also bout tons of domain names which can prove costly to renew if you don't monetise them in time. Also I spent too much time getting distracted when I should be working on my product! ...

I tend to try and get things too perfect before I release them as well ... a real time destroyer - better to take action first and tweak later I think!!

I currently have somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 gigs of information products that I have downloaded over the past 2 years.

I've been great at the 90 yard Dash. I get ideas, I actually work on projects and accomplish things. A lot of it with me is follow through. Firing off a bullet or 2 and then laying down the gun and walking away.

Today I am committing to WASH, RINSE, and REPEAT. Actually, there's an extra step in that formula that I have missed over the years. FOLD. Finishing the job in prep for the next one.

I've made many mistakes but I think the biggest was buying tons of software products for all types of services (backlinking, content creation, article submission, etc.) without having a real plan or any guidance.

Mines has been niche selection. I had a blog in dating, hair loss, insomnia and getting fit. None of which were successful, due to me not focusing on them for any REAL amount of time.

I jumped from one to the other wasting all my money. Ironically, I now know what niche I'm going to enter without a shadow of a doubt, but have run out of money to fund it.

Time to get back to penny saving before I restart.

So, just to clarify, my biggest mistake is not focusing on one project.

Have a vision of your end result. Don't worry that things aren't working instantly. It takes time to get some traction. Once you get that, then you build momentum. Then you start seeing positive changes. But first you must focus on your end result and the tasks you must do to get there!

    All the best.

    Jamie
