Twitter for Small Business?

Hello all,

I am just beginning to dip my toes into the social media marketing pool. I have set up a facebook fan page for my business, and I also started a Twitter account.

I have heard that I should follow "target audiences" and "Likeminded people"

I have some questions about that...

1. I am trying to promote a video production business. I am in Pittsburgh, so is it stupid for me to follow (and in turn, hope they follow me back) people outside of Pittsburgh? Or should I spread out nationwide with the hopes of getting calls from outside my service area?

2. When I think of "likeminded people", I can only think of my competition. Is it taboo to follow competition, or has it shown to either help or hurt a business?

I am really new at social networking, and any help will be huge.

THanks so much!

Matt
