opt-in lists?

I'm going back and forth on whether to do this or not.

The reason?

Well I look at the content of some of the free books in my niche, and I almost would be content with the information they provide if I was a buyer!

It seems counter-productive to inform my list about the main site, and then be like "but if you don't feel like paying for the full content, here's a compact version of the information provided by the site in this book"

now sure it has links to the site in the book, and there's a chance the people who download the book might forward it off to friends.

But there's no guarantee they will return to the site (at least not through MY affiliate link and not some other Google search for reviews on the site)

....

So what do you guys mostly do? Just send visitors straight to the site, or do you prefer the free eBook route?

I considered sending them to the site, and a few emails later offering the follow up book, but I dont want my list to think that a free book will be right around the corner if they hold off buying now...you know?

also this is a niche with plenty of free resources available (not unlike IM)

and I already do mention several free resources in various emails I send out...

does this create a list of freebie hunters?

Anyone? I'm sure someone has experience with offering re-brandable ebooks to their list?

Is this a profitable method, or is it better to just send your lists directly to the merchant site?
