100$ Fee on Amazon Check

Hello!

I went into my bank to turn in the Amazon Check of 500$+ and they say it takes 1 month to get the money, ok I'm used to do that like in 2010, but this time 1 month later I got the money on my bank account but 100$ less.

They say in 2011 amazon US bank has an 100$ fee on 500$+ checks (i'm from Europe), last year I always got the same amount on my account.

What is happening? I tried contact amazon yesterday but still no response from them.

Why don't you use direct bank deposit?

    That sounds awful.

Im sure i read that Amazon waive the fee for checks if you live outside the US. Have they changed their policy?

    It currently says this on their site;

Are there any fees associated with any of the payment methods?

We will deduct an $15 processing fee from all checks we send you. If your billing address is outside the United States, and direct deposit is, therefore, unavailable to you, we will waive the $15 fee. There is no processing fee for payment via gift certificate or direct deposit.

Who exactly is charging the $100 fee? Is it the bank or Amazon?

If you deposit a check for $500 into you bank, then you actually see an increase of $400 - the $100 difference somehow involves your BANK's fees. Further, these fees should show up in your account as various bank transaction charges, itemized as such

You simply cannot deposit a check value $500 and the bank credit you with $100 LESS, without a clear accounting as to where that $100 went. Amazon sent you a check for $500, that should show up as a credit to your account with your bank's associated charges clearly documented.

Yes I saw there is 15$ fees and still I don't get it why the 100$ fee.

Then the problem is with my bank not the us one..

Then the best thing to do is to go to my bank and see how they documented that

Just to clarify, Amazon does not charge any fees for out of country checks so it must be your bank.

Here in Canada, if I get a check for $100 that is the amount that goes into my US dollar account.

Went today to my bank and they clearly shown that Amazon Bank deposited around 100$ less than the check amount to my bank. They say that this is normal this days from US bank deposits to Europe banks, this fees are normal (insane!!).

I'm still waiting for amazon reply, last year I had no such problems. I'm from Europe near Austria.

My bank charges $10-$15 for all cheques. Try depositing it in your some other bank account.

Try to find out if Amazon's bank has offices in Europe. If they do, contact them and ask if similar fees would be deducted from amazon checks deposited to an account with their bank. If there would be no or lower fee, set up an account with them. Once your funds are in your account there, you should be able to do an electronic transfer from that bank to your bank (if you still wish to continue using them).

Not sure how many bank options you have in Europe but here in the USA we have one on every street corner so if one starts to get picky with my personal or my business accounts I simply tell them I wish to make an appointment to close my accounts out. This generally results in some new options being made available and if not, I follow through with my threats and close everything out and move elsewhere.

Yes, I'd say this issue has nothing to do with Amazon. It is between you and your bank. Check with them first and get it sorted out. Personally, I'd like to know the outcome. Sounds like your bank may be robbing you, not Amazon giving you problems.

Ummmm, are you sure you're in Europe?

Are you sure you aren't in North Korea or something?

    Because that's a ludicrous fee

If I were you, I would have waited for their response and asked how they could take such a high fee, there is surely an explanation.

I think you should cash in at the same bank (name) that the check was issued from. For example, if the check was issued from Citibank then you might get huge fees if you cash in the check from other banks, like ING, and less fees if you cash in at the same bank. That happened for me when I cashed a 90 euro check at another bank issued from Citibank, and they took 10 euro fees, that's well over 10%.

Other banks might have other fees, so if you do 10% of $500 that's $50, then add $15 amazon fee, it's already $65.
