Do you use Akismet for your clients sites?

The paid versions of Akismet start at $5 to $10 per site per month. That's a good percentage of what I charge for monthly hosting.

I would like to hear from those who have web site/hosting business clients. How do you handle spam control? Are there alternatives?

Thanks for the help.

  • Have them install the free plugin SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam to their wordpress site. It requires that people who want to submit a comment enter a captcha. And 99% of spam is scrapebox and it doesn't handle captcha's and spammers aren't going to pay for captcha credits.

Other than that, if your clients need Akismet on their commercial site, don't worry about the cost, that is something they pay. If their site needs it after installing SI Captcha, then they are large enough that $5 a month isn't going to kill them.

I think SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam also has an option to allow you to write a question up and that's another great deterrent against spammers as well. The only problem you willh have using the plugin is with the human spammers, which are a pain, but you just need to ban their IP.

Not really, my writers usually help me take care of most spam that is posted, so there would be no point in using it.

If these are business websites for your clients, they should happly pay $5. The reason been that someone is going to have to weed out the business contact messages from the spam. If they spend more then 20-30minutes a month doing this, then the $5/$10 has paid for itself in the way of saved time for a staff member (ie wages).
