Honestly, I didn't use a course. I found that the more I typed, the better I got. I still would be put to shame by a secretary or data entry person...LOL... but even at work, I find myself looking less at the keyboard (my main problem) and more at the screen. But, that was what helped me. ~Joy~

I would suggest you try UltraKey it gives you many lessons and critique to get faster. I made my typing speed 20x faster because of Ultrakey and it's a great program. I would definitely recommend using it.

I have Dragon 10 and I couldn't do without it. I use it with Open Office, email, everything. That's why my posts sometimes get a little long and wordy. I like being able to read off of notes and get everything down no matter what the condition. Then, edit, edit, edit. Once you get used to it you'll be ruined for regular typing.

Thanks Rhonda. I probably should have mentioned that. It will get better and better with your voice over time. Little rocky to start with. I live in the south so Redneck is my native language. If there are words that it keeps on stumbling over you can go in and specify what its supposed to do when it hears a word that isn't in its vocabulary. Talk naturally when you are trying to train it. Don't talk like a robot. Just read the script.

Same here. I type fast but uses only 3 fingers each. I tried so many times to improve it but my reflexes is not allowing it anymore. The more I struggle to use all fingers, the most I become slower... I think I will live with it.. My typing speed is around 40wpm and can write 10 to 15 articles of 500 words per day.

aside from the constant use of my keyboard, my friend once sent me a game designed to spit out sentences over the course of a minute and at the end it tells you how many words per minute you got.

Sentences were completely random so you wouldn't be doing the same one on a re-run.

Got so obsessed that my average bumped up to around 114-116 words per minute. I don't often use that speed, but I can if I want Try it sometime.

I use dragon and it works almost perfect for me. I learned to type using a game called typing of the dead. It makes you type words to kill the zombies. I have always enjoyed resident evil type of games, so it really help me to learn to type fast.

I dont type fast and I can say that I am pretty slow. Time has not permitted me to go on lessons for typing which may be the reason why I still do the two finger typing style, which is often noticed by people around me. LOL.

I remember trying though via typingpal and other typing games I found via google but if you are not doing it consistently you will eventually forget.

Yes typing was not a skill I learned at school either but is amazing how fast you can get. Might have a look at some of these courses mentioned and see if I can fit in the time to do the course. Thanks guys

Back in 1990, I was a two finger typist, and started finding it a problem in that I was a writer and editor.

I spent a month on an old program called Typing Tutor (not sure if it's still available). It was supposed to be a 3 month course, but I stopped at 1 month.
I had all the basics down, and just needed some practice so I approached a friend who was head of a small publishing company, and asked if there was anything I could take on for typing practice.
She gave me a stack of famous quotations that she had compiled over the years that were only available as a hard copy.
I took the project on, and spent 1 hour each day typing out these awesome quotes that turned into great practice for me, and an accomplishment for the publishing company at the same time.
I found that avoiding the moronic typing of nonsense that most programs offer was the best thing for me, i.e. once I learned the keyboard and could touch type (albeit slowly), I just practiced daily on something that I was enjoying, and in 3 months I was a proficient typist--which has been a big help to me ever since.

An interesting program called the Almena system also looks like a pretty good direction from what I've seen.

Have you heard about dvorak? The fastest typist in the world used it and was very successful, your fastest fingers are by the most common letters in this keyboard set up.

I used Mavis Beacon in HS and averaged 35-40wpm. Of course, we also used typewriters back then too.

I was an average typist but had never really improved since high school. I wanted to speed up so I bought a software program. I got impatient with the drills and was doing them less and less. One day I tried one of the games. I would play the game every day for 15 minutes or so. I forgot about trying to increase my typing speed and just enjoyed the game for a short change of pace. After a month or so I could not believe how much faster I had become. Without even trying I made a HUGE leap in my speed. Now I play a game once or twice a month to tune up.

My advice - once you get the basics down and don't need to look at the keyboard anymore just start playing games!

Definitely Dragon. It'll take you through the training you need.

An alternative is to get your articles transcribed. If you're not in a hurry, the cost can be pretty reasonable at castingwords, fiverr, and the like.

Dragon tip: you'll never get a misspelled word with Dragon, but you might get the wrong word entirely...be really careful when you go back and edit. Also, try not to stop and train words or fix things while you're creating the content. That will only slow your average speed down (like stopping off to pee or buy snacks every 30 miles on a 1,000 mile journey...ok if you have to go pee,then go, but the theory here is sound!). Writing is writing, training is training. Don't mix/multitask.

I'm a big fan of Cortez Peters' books (yes, books). They've been around for decades, but they're still the best. I learned how to type using them, and my speed is between 80-100 wpm.

These are the tips for typing faster:
1) learn to type with 10 fingers, see always keyword with coloured button for using the right fingers
2) use dragon naturally speaking (use training in dragon). More you'll use it and more it'll be accurate
3) learn shortcuts (if yon learn shortcuts it's not necessary to use the mouse). Limiting the mouse use you can really write faster.
