Will Android take the market like PC's did from Mac

Apple is starting to see dramatic falls in sales even though it is a wonderful product.

There is no real question whether Macs are better than PC's in my mind however their draconian marketing system is what lets them down.

Now we see it happening again with their tight control on what their customers can and can't do.

Is the tide turning and will apple ipad and iphone head down the same road?

Android seems to be the in thing at the moment. Its good to have some competition for Apple, lets have a price war.

Well, the IPhone is very expensive and that takes it from the list of options of many potential customers.

Android may outrun IPhone because of a greater market share in the future. However there are a few things to consider.

With IPhone, usually, as a developer, you have only a few devices to run your tests on, now with Android, this gets a whole lot more complicated.

The devices SHOULD all support the same applications, but they run different versions of Android and they have been modified by the cell phone manufacturers in many ways. I have heard from many developers that it was a pain to develop for Android. However, you don't need to buy an expensive Apple and register a development Iphone jadajadajada. Also there is no company telling you whether you can sell your product or not.

So I think that the situation will become the same as with computers: Apple, more stable but a lot more expensive, Android, cheaper, more applications available, but everything a little bit more buggy.

Ipad and iPhone are expensive - but so are some Androids. I think one big advantage that Android has is that you have a wide range of phones/tablets to choose from, whereas iPad and iPhone come on apple and that's it. With Android you can choose from LG, Samsung, Optus and all the other phones that come with Android - much better choice and most of them cheaper than iPhone!

    Argh.

    Peeve nerve has been hit.

A Mac is a PC. A Mac can run Windows, and a white box, and any brand other than Apple, can run OS X.

Will Android dominate the OS market? Not for the next few years.

I think that you'll find that android is already dominating the smart phone OS market :-

      That's so true.

The fact that apple is only offering it in the us through verizon or ATT is going to hurt them period.

I played with an iphone 4 it's ok I like my droid better this is personal choice.

As for mac being a better computer I have to disagree. Since your a programmer for phone aps. you said it's a nightmare to work on android phone apps I can see that.

But then you say mac's are better well if you look at it from the same angle that you just wrote about the phone.

The reason they are so called better is because they handle all the hardware there is no competition for hardware that is within the strict guidelines of apple

As for a pc there are thousands of combination's of hardware you can have on a computer from memory, motherboards, cpu's etc. It's a coding nightmare and windows 7 has to deal with all that..

Windows 7 is extremely stable.. Case in point as soon as win 7 came out when was the last commercial did you see about the mac vs the pc?

None cause Apple knew what they were talking about is null now.

Iphone lost me when I found out you can't even change the battery. I'm out and away from power supplies and carry enough extra batteries to run my droid all day and night in constant use. Case closed for me.

I pad vs droid. I have to admit I like ipad slightly better. However, droid wins again due to the battery issue and the open source factor.

Still I can't figure out why there isn't a Windows Phone and a Windows pad that rivals both iPhone and Droid.

George, the battery issue is due to Apple employing extreme measures in whittling down the thickness of the iPhone. The Android phone manufacturers have taken a far more practical approach in that all phones have user replaceable batteries, and the sacrifice in thickness is only somewhere in the region of 2-3 mm for many of the present phones. In addition to that, the upcoming Android phones from Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson pretty much match or beat the thickness of the iPhone 4, and still manage to provide a user replaceable battery!

The tablet comparison is a little murkier at the present, as Android 3.0 (Honeycomb - the tablet OS) hasn't quite been fleshed out yet, and there's only one tablet out on the market currently that is available with it (the Motorola Xoom). This OS has a very sophisticated desktop-like interface (as opposed to a phone interface), and it'll evolve into a very powerful alternative to iPad's OS that will enable you to do a lot more with it (true multitasking, live widgets, more productive/higher screen resolution, etc.)

It's hit a lot of manufacturers - especially those reliant on memory as one of the memory factories was literally swept away in the disaster and although it would normally cause some problems, it's also promoted panic buying.

I think one of the things missing here is where the content will come from and who wants it. I do a lot of work in the video industry and the Android platform is good but definitely not taking over the market. The big push right now is in OTT (Over The Top video services - bringing video from around the internet to any device) and multi-screen experience (ie. having all your devices know what you're doing and being able to move from watching a movie at your tv to continuing it on your PC upstairs, or on your mobile device when you go out).

These things are not dependant on whether you're using Android or not, so they won't make one technology or another outsell the others.

For many users they don't care whether you call it an ipad or an android - they just base their preferences on the user experience and that's where Apple always come up trumps, even with performance issues they've built a brand that makes people want their stuff - whatever it does.

I couldn't agree more - I use multiple Google services presently that are vital to running my online business, and it's wonderful how they integrate so well with my Android EVO smartphone. I'm pretty sure that the services integration on the Android tablet OS (Honeycomb 3.0) is going to be even better and on a larger scale.

    Since we've shifted to tablets,

The Blackberry Playbook can use android apps as well.

The Xoom is making me reconsider my opinion on tablets, it's pretty sweet. I'm on the fence but I'm slowly being sucked in to picking one up.

What I really want is a complete computer experience in a tablet. I could care less about checking my Facebook or watching youtube, I want to fire up real applications and work on the road. I want Windows 7 in a pint sized package. I know a couple are in the works so I'll probably hold off a couple more months and see what's available then.

With more sets, more freedom and Google behind it Android will lead the market but Apple will be a close second so it will not be the supremacy PCs have over Macs. So no, not like that.

And there's the problem: Windows 7 isn't a tablet operating system, and Steve Ballmer seems really reluctant to acknowledge that..
Yeah, the HP Slate doesn't work as well as advertised.

If I were Ballmer, I'd make a tablet UI for windows a priority. They could go the windows mobile 7 route but it's not the same, it would just be another ipad or xoom.

Microsoft needs to hire or promote some creative 20-somethings to get a little cool into their product pipeline. I'm not going to covert to apple but I'm tired of them coming out with all of the cool toys first.

Microsoft needs to take a little initiative, and while they are at it, how about replacing paint with something relevant to the 21st century and a couple of other cool freebie programs. I'd like a microsoft garage band! Seriously, wordpad and windows movie maker aren't cutting it.

It's expensive but Dell is offering one now (not affiliate link):
Latitude XT2 Tablet PC Details | Dell
I'll have to check that out. It's crazy expensive.

I think what I want is still a couple of years down the road. The MAC air is close, lose the keyboard and replace it with a screen. Make sure it has a usb port so it can be used as a traditional computer with external keyboard and mouse. I'm sure Jobs has something like that in the works.

Yeah, I completely agree on all three counts. It's hard to believe that a company which is supposed to be worth a quarter of a trillion dollars finds it so hard to adapt and innovate.

A good example is the Kin Phone. Lifetime: Less than 3 months.

There's talk that Apple are bringing out a keyboard for the iPad. I don't know how many will buy, as it seems to defeat the purpose of a tablet computer. Unless, of course, the keyboard is supposed to live on your desk to be used when you're not out and about.

More interesting is the way that the iPhone/iPad interface has influenced the next generation of OS X, 10.7 "Lion". Check out "Launchpad" and "Full Screen Apps" to see what I mean... Apple - Mac OS X Lion

Where are seeing that apple's sales are falling? Might want to look a little closer. They're targeting like 50,000,000 Ipad sales this year, probably close to 100,000,000 iphones, countless Ipods, etc.

If you're talking about overall cell phone market share, then yes, it's declining. But take a look at actual profits. Apple's making a ton...
