Selling what people do not want to buy

OK, I'm curious what you guys thought are on this;

First of all, a very short bit of background, I work for a small publishing company with a range of books in the natural health field, we have some on various diseases, some on things like vitamin C etc.

I have also done online marketing on my own projects in totally non related niches (In niches where people WANT the product).

I would like to create some online promotions of the books our company sells but there are a few difficulties;

1. Unlike when you can pick a niche with a hungry market, this is like trying to sell something that people don't really want to buy. They may benefit from it, but it's not a yummy 'must have' WANT, and we all know people do what they want not what they need.

2. I am struggling to find incentives to capture names to build a list, the books are low ticket items to begin with.

So my first project has been to start a few review style pages, they are as neutral and non 'sales' oriented as possible, the idea being just to get a bit of Google ranking and who knows, which is not very scientific at all.

My thought has been to try a traditional sales letter style page but once again we're not talking about something with a market that is falling over itself to buy, in fact we're often talking about things that most people link to pain, things like diet and exercise and vitamin supplements etc.

Anyway, any and all thoughts will be most welcome :-)

    My recommendation is to take one of those books and use it as a giveaway for a squeeze page, so you can collect names and email addresses, then you can email your other offers to your list (which will now be targeted leads, instead of cold traffic)

      I feel like your niche happens to be a very popular one. Many people today are concerned about health and even using natural ways to get healing.

      I agree that offering something helpful as a giveaway would help get people on a mailing list for you.

      When trying to sell your books, do like clickbank does.........Sell the reader on what the book is going to do for them, and what types of things they are going to learn from the book. Get them excited about getting answers to their problems.

      People have problems - if you can help solve that problem, you have a customer!

    Have you considered publishing them to Kindle products?

    They're cheap, but a lot of people down load them.

    Actually the natural health niche is big! It all comes down to finding the right buyer keywords in your niche. Then you will see a much better optin rate.

    I think some of the advice is very sound - you need to develop a free product as a giveaway to at least give some free value for the visitor parting with their email address

    I'm slightly surprised ...

    The "natural health niche" (actually it's not a niche at all: it's a "market" and a huge one, but your individual products may be in niches, of course) is really popular at the moment.

    I completely agree that people often don't want what they need, and of course that raised big marketing issues.

    Is it possible to "re-package" some of the products to any extent, so that they address "wants" rather than "needs"?

    Or is what you're describing a variation of the "selling prevention is much harder than selling a cure" problem? (That's undoubtedly true, and can be a big problem, even within that market, I think?).

    Sorry, I'm asking a lot more than I'm offering, here. Call me curious ...
