Hosting two sites on a single shared account?

Hi folks,

I mentioned yesterday in another thread that I'd found this site called dot.tk where you can register a free domain. Anyway, I used it primarily to register a free short domain for my personal finance blog (dolr.tk), but for the hell of it, I was fooling around and found I could get blgr.tk for free as well so I registered that too (I plan to pay for both once I have a little more money to ensure that I don't lose them -- you have to get 25 unique visitors in 90 days to keep your free domains).

I have been toying for a while with the idea of starting a second blog about blogging. While I know it's a very crowded field, it's one I enjoy and I'd treat it more as a hobby which might someday make some money for me. The truth is, my current blog is also something of a hobby-- I started my personal finance blog after a long time client of mine, who had me writing about personal finance was forced to lay off most of his writing staff when some investors pulled out of his site.

I found that I missed writing about it because I'd enjoyed it and my sister suggested I should start my own blog and "keep all the money." It turned out to be much more work than I thought, but since I enjoy the subject, I decided to make it happen and I'm continuing to plow effort into it.

Anyway, I was thinking that I could start a second blog on my shared hosting account with my new free domain to get started with it. This way, there are no costs involved (hosting is paid for two years, the domain is free, though I may spend the $62.50 to register it for 9 years just to be safe and I already have an autoresponder account from Iminica so it's just a matter of the hour or two to set up the blog and get it formatted the way I want).

I was just wondering though-- is there any issue with doing this? I mean do I need to check with my host (it's dreamhost) if I'm allowed to host a second full site (I do seem to be able to since I own several domains for my current blog, thepersonalfinancehelpcenter.com, personalfinancehelpcenter.com and themoneyblog.info, plus now dolr.tk and all of them had the option to do "full hosting" though all of them in fact redirect to thepersonalfinancehelpcenter.com)? Any other issues to consider?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Eric

just use "addon domain" feature to add the domain. You shouldn't have any issues. I dont use dreamhost but before i got a dedicated machine I had 7 full sites on a Hostgator shared hosting.

Just put it in your signature-file here, and you'll do that with no problem.

I bet they'll rank well in the Union Islands.

You wouldn't rather register a nice .com domain for 7 or 8 years with that money, instead? What's the attraction of ".tk"?

Unless your hosting is "for one domain only" (like some $1/$2 per month packages?) you should have absolutely no problem at all, regarding the hosting. I host a large number of domains on Hostgator shared hosting account with no apparent problem.

Thanks for the suggestions . I'll definitely do that with my main site and will do it with the blogging site once I have it up.

And yes, I eventually plan to register a .com as well for the blogging blog if I get it off the ground.

The advantage of registering a .tk is that it's a short (custom) URL which I won't lose because a company goes out of business (ala TinyURL).

So ultimately, I'd have both of them. However the .com would likely be a much longer URL because there are pretty much no short URLs available anymore for .com so there is a value in having both (I do have an idea for a longer URL for a .com but don't have the money to spend for it right now so I'll just take my chances it will still be available when I can afford it).

Sounds alright. I cant see any reason why the host would mind. But if you're unsure just choose a host with free "add-on" domains.

Personally I wouldn't choose a .tk domain name, but I guess the short URLs are attractive to some.
