Quick! Stop The Leak! - But Where Is It?!

I had a random thought that I was inspired to post here today.

Internet marketing or marketing in general is such a crazy illusive craft.

I think it's so difficult for so many because the marketing universe is not like "normal" physical world.

A lot of the ideas are really "out there" mentally and cannot be seen, or even implemented physically.

Getting direct feedback is extremely difficult when you start.

It's like trying to build a boat without any physical materials, and without knowing what the boat should look like, and how to make it float.

To complicate issues, you have to make the boat float on a lake with water that's unique, and what makes a boat float in one lake (IE. Market) won't necessarily float in another lake.

And on top of that, the only way to know if it's working or not is to throw your boat in the lake, or to fill it up with water to see if it's leaking. (IE, sending PPC traffic to a landing page.)

If your boat floats, that's great! But if it starts leaking, or sinking... you don't always know why, because you can't really SEE the boat you just built, (You're just guessing if the boat is really a boat, and not just a random pile of wood.)

Because every boat looks different in every lake, you don't even know how to fix it anyway.

So it's kind of scary.

You have to build your boat based on intangible materials, that you don't even know how to put together. And then you have to throw your boat in the lake, and if it sinks you may not know how to fix it, or to even fish it back out of the lake.

It's almost like you have to develop a new set of senses that are outside of the physical realm to be able to "interpret" the marketing/psychology world in order to be able to really "see" and "feel" your marketing materials. And then be able to use your "marketing senses" to predict and adjust the construction of your boat to each "lake" you explore.

But if you don't have the popper senses developed then you'll never be able to adjust, and you're just hammering away aimlessly.

It's kind of like granting a 30 year old blind person the gift of sight.

Sure they'll be able to see... but they have no idea what the objects they are seeing represent. And they'll probably bump into a wall, or mistake a person for a chair, etc...

I guess what I'm saying is that marketing is so difficult, because it's a whole new world that's based on human psychology, influence, building concepts, ideas, products, traffic, etc.

Not to mention learning new technical skills and tools.

Without the ability to "see" what you're doing, and interpret your marketing "senses" then you'll have to be very lucky to navigate in the marketing world, or to build a boat that actually floats.
