I just approved a spam comment

Actually, it was hard to tell if it was spam. Akismet marked it as a spam, but it could have just as easily been broken English. I approved it anyway because the poster was using a back link for a stop smoking product, which I support.

So, anyone else ever approved a spam comment for any reason?

Yes. I approve most of the genuine trackbacks that Akismet marks as spam.

Akismet has served me well. Never had something go in the spam folder that was not spam.

I think the comment you received was spam. Broken English combined with a link should set off a few red flags.

If it is hard to read, chances are it wont add value anyway, so why keep it?

If they are readable, make some sense with regard to the post subject and do not point back to a nasty site, I always approve.

Reasons? Comments give the blog post page and the overall blog some extra social validation to the search engine bots and I would be hypocritical by denying someone a well earned backlink when I comment hoping to recieve one on other people's blogs.

I do have some real comments go into the spam folder - rarely but it does happen. So yes I usually go through the spam and look for any legitimate comments and approve them.

I missed one the other day - I saw a comment from someone I know but I didn't see it until I was clicking the 'empty spam' button and I lost it!!

Spammers are my friends. The more they post, the more content I get for my blog. I don't use akismet, I just use settings that put every comment into moderation. I take every spamming comment, strip out the url link, edit the comment to add keyword related content, and then I reply as admin to the altered comment with even more related content.

I love the IP address variety the spammers donate to my blog. And I love how they add just the content I want!

Wow, I never thought this post would open such an interesting conversation.

I did not realize that I could strip out the html and/or edit their posts. Now I'm going to have to see.

Broken English doesn't bother me much, as I don't think that "English" is the Superior language.

What I didn't want to approve was the penis back links. LOL.

This is my own personal IM blog though, so I really like the idea of replying and expanding for more content.
