The lonely world of internet marketing

It's a beautiful day outside today in the UK. But I wont let myself get out there and enjoy myself with friends and family because I have a goal to meet. I haven't yet reached a level of income that I'm comfortable with.

Does anyone else feel the same?

In a 'normal', usually less ambitious job at least you'd have the company of your colleagues. You could get out during your lunch breaks and have your week ends off to do as you please.

But IM is work 24/7 and all on your own. It can bear down on you sometimes. Not that I'm giving up of course

I have DREAMS to fulfill! So it's off to work again.

Why does it have to be on your own?

I have met tons of great people online and chat with some everyday on Skype.

If you don't like the "online only" you can always attend some sort of seminar or get together to talk about Internet Marketing.

Today was a fantastic day on the south coast of the UK hit the great outside with my fellow laptop

I have to agree with Mike here, it really does not need to be a solo thing, I have spent hours of the day chatting to different people making new friends bouncing ideas off one another and having built some good relationships getting to know new people is the best part of what i do.

It was very different when i first started mind you I was one of those "I'm going to lock myself in the spare room and make millions but never have to show my face or speak to anyone" kinda guys lol.

I was like that due to the courses buying at the time mind you thats exactly what they were telling me, my i have come a long way since then

Me too, I also chat with a lot of people and sit outside with my laptop! One thing I learned many years ago though was that you absolutely need to get out and take time for yourself too, this sends reminders to your subconsious mind that you're doing the right things by rewarding yourself with some time out. ;-)

To be honest I think you need to force yourself to take a break sometimes. While I'm in the UK today and had planned on certain tasks, I still allowed myself to go out and enjoy that beautiful sunshine! It was glorious and you certainly need to make the most of it in the UK

Believe me I understand how difficult it can be to pull yourself away. But in the long run, you'll be far more productive if you allow yourself flexibility. And isn't "freedom" one of the reasons we all work online anyway?

Don't worry about it. Soon enough it will start raining for 3 months solid like it does every damn summer in this horrid place and then you'll have 6 months of arctic winter to look forward to. It's the joy living and working in the uk brings.

I agree with the two previous post...You don't have to be alone.
Also you can go to many different seminars that are going on during
    the year.

You don't have to be alone.

Why not build offline relationships also? The person outside could be the investor you need or may give you the idea that propels your business to the next level. I would recommend to have a balance of online and offline relationships with people in order to strengthen your overall business model.

Having the proper mindset is one of the most important tools in IM. If you are off your game then it is likely you won't produce. IM is a business above all else. If your head isn't in the game then you need to take the time to get it there. Just like the other posts if that means going outside of the house to network or sitting in a webinar to freshen your perspective or spend time on skype to do the same. It is part of the business and can get you motivated again.

Beware of the urge to shut yourself in for the sake of "getting it done". Most of the time you end up getting nothing done.

      Hope this helps,

      Christina

      2 things:

      * The journey is as important as the destination, and it's nice to
take time to stop and smell the roses. Sure, you can't do that all
day and hope to be successful next week - but then, if you ignore
it for a year and do become "successful", are you sure it'll feel
that way? [Hint: My answer is 'No' - Get out and enjoy that beautiful
day, we all know how rare those are in London! ]

      * You don't have to keep IM 'lonely'. My friend Martin Avis does
a periodic luncheon meeting in London, you can attend one of them
and meet some excellent chaps who are involved in IM. Also, there's
nothing wrong with planning your own version of it. Randy Smith does
this in Yorkshire, I believe - and many others may. Just a meeting
over evening tea or a drink every evening at the pub would give you
enough socialization and a chance to brainstorm ideas that make the
rest of your work entertaining, exciting and fun

      Just my 2 cents.

      All success

Yeah - I agree - I don't ever think of being online when you're at home physically alone to be lonely though. I have so much fun interacting with people - either through forums, or blogs, chat, gaming, etc. It's just a matter of being happy with whatever you do. Whether you're out selling propane and propane accessories, or if you work in Sector 7G, or even if you work on web-development all day like I do - so long as you're happy - that's the important thing!

Yes, it can be difficult especially in the beginning to pull yourself away. It feels like your work is never done. And most of your "real" friends and family don't really understand what you are doing with this "online stuff" so it can be hard to get support sometimes.

But, you have to schedule time away to go to the gym, outside, socialize, etc. It is hard when you work at home to separate the two - because your job and home are one in the same. I completely understand!

Gosh, despite asking a question I didn't really expect any replies on that one. Just wanted to share how I feel.

I read every response. Thank you all. Julie there touched upon a pertinent point. Your friends and family really don't understand. I went from a stable, highly respected and well-paid job to the unpredictable world of IM.

Everyone thinks I'm a bum, sitting in my room all day and doing nothing. Thankfully unlike everyone around me I don't base the decisions I make in life around what others will think of me.

But when not a single person understands what you're doing, it can bear down on you. To an extent.

It's important to still have a balance between work and your life outside of work, and that includes when you're working in IM. If you don't take some time for yourself, you could easily get burned out.

Yeah it does gets lonely some times. Thats the way I felt when I moved from my job to IM. The thing that I miss the most is the friendly banter over a cup of coffee.. But then I do go out with family and friends, so I agree that you don't have to be lonely to be in IM.

There are times when sitting at your desk enjoying the day while everyone else is at work can seem like a drag, especially when you know you've got 10 articles to write and it's a beautiful day outside (we're finally getting some of those in Kansas City).

But, in the end it's worth it I think. Just remember that.

Snow_Predator, I guess I have similar feelings in general. I am really happy with what I am doing online and how I make money, but the lack of real world friends/contacts from internet marketing world that I could spend time and discuss about everything related to online businesses is really bad. I have many online contacts to talk to and share ideas but email conversations are not like going out to a cafe and talking while drinking a cup of coffee.

Like you, I am still trying to reach a stable level of income so that I could spend more time with my family and friends and invest in my hobbies.

  • That's the difference between being an entrepreneur and being an employee: as an entrepreneur, you breathe your business. Very often I find myself thinking about how to improve my websites while walking my dog in the park, or while driving, etc. My business, whether I like it or not, goes with me wherever I go way beyond the standard 9-to-5 schedule.

Do you have a friend/neighbor that you could take a break and go for a walk with? It's amazing how even 30 minutes away out in the sunshine can change your perspective.

Also - connect with others on facebook, forums or a mastermind group. It may not be "face to face" but if it's with like-minded people, you can encourage each other.

Get out and get some sunshine while you can. I took a 30 minute walk in the sun yesterday (also UK based) with my toddler son and I can honestly say it didn't detract from the work I was doing - I went back in with a clearer head and feeling more positive and in control.

And it's so true, when you work for youself you never really clock off anyway - it's all still going on on the back burner of your mind. The subconscious is very powerful and can still be processing things when you are physically absent from the work situation. Trust it.

I can work late tonight after the day is over - I can work tomorrow.

If you wait till you have everything you want before you enjoy the benefits of working at home - you'll miss all the fun.

I've done the things that HAD to be done today - and I have work to do...but it can wait while I enjoy the gorgeous day. What's the point of being able to set your own schedule if what you do is scheduled yourself 9-5 like a job?

In addition, I meet and communicate with countless people online and in-person. My advice is to give yourself time to exhale. It will also benefit your business and your person.

Nice one Phil. Yeh, it can feel like **** sometimes but I have no regrets. My hard work and sacrifice is totally necessary for my future (and current) success.

Things were MUCH worse before when I was literally spending every minute of my time every day behind the PC. I started to gain weight and my health was deteriorating. I do weight-training and high intensity interval training regularly now so I DO get out. Just not as much as I'd like to. Yet.

When I see my friends and family coming home after work and spending the rest of the day watching TV, I don't envy them one bit. Just HAVING ambition and knowing that I'm acting on it is reward enough for me.

Ah, and on the side - no-one's giving me a pounding here. There's some solid advice floating around here and I thank you all.

I guess I'm a little confused about enjoying the Now (as suggested by Ekhart Tolle), and working for the future. The goal I suppose is to achieve a suitable balance.

Internet marketing is in the world of his own but we choose to make what we want - it can be fun or it can be lonely. While you will need a lot of focus and determination to succeed you still need to add fun to your life. If you choose to help others while you are maximizing your potential in internet marketing you will enjoy what you are doing. Cheer up and find somebody to chat your knowledge with through forums and other ways of sharing. Anyway enjoy yourself while trying to make money.

I am an early bird. By about noon, I've put in 8 hours.

I don't stop there, usually, but sometimes I do. I have a standing lunch date every week with friends. Which friends will show is never for sure, but they are always there if I am.

I make a point to work with local clients, and I get to go to their places of business while enjoying an afternoon.

I work with other 'net denizens, also local, and we meet for lunch, take off a Friday afternoon, and brainstorm when the mood takes us.

I can and have gone weeks not leaving the house for anything other than errands, and it didn't bother me at the time. Now, I want more out of my life, so I made my choices.

Personally I suggest that maybe you look at things in a different perspective, I suggest reading " The 4 Hour Work Week " great stuff and will open your eyes to a whole new world. Yes at first being your own boss takes alot of hard work & devotion but in time learning to delegate tasks to other people will help you optimize your business & personal time. It's not all about becoming a millionaire and rich, many people often confuse that with what they really want which the lifestyle they believe the rich live. It's all about separating the correlation and belief that time=money. Just an idea, but best of luck to ya.

      Ah, thank you Bobby.

I've read 4-hour work-week. Tim Ferris recommended a book there called the E-myth by an M Gerber or something. I just started reading it today and it really offers a much more compelling argument for outsourcing and getting the technical aspects of your work done for you.

I'm seriously considering outsourcing some of my work today, so your little post there couldn't be more timely.

It was never about being rich for me btw, but always first and formost all about empowering myself and increasing my free time so I can just live, enjoy life and help & empower those around me.

I was hesitant to outsource at first, but I have found some pretty cheap ways to outsource and it is SO worth it. I only use the money I make online, so none of it comes from my "real" income. (nope not a self-made millionaire). If it is things you are not good at or like to do - you would be surprised what gems you can find in the Warrior for Hire or Fiverr....

Remember, you can't work 24/7. You must take some breaks in order to clear you mind and be more creative. Balance work and play, cause all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.
It's good that you're going for your goals, but the good thing is enjoying the process, and not shutting yourself all day long in order to succeed.
The road to success can be fun as well.

    Workaholics Anthem

"All work and no play makes [INSERT NAME HERE] a dull boy"

There is no going around it, we HAVE to take breaks.

I remember a few years ago, I was doing some programming for this company and I worked around the clock for 3 weeks straight. I'd get maybe 2 hours of sleep, if that, per every 2 or 3 days. I finally burned out after 3 weeks and had to take a week off just to recover. After another 3 week cycle of "workaholic mode" I was able to finish the project. Something that would of taken me 6 months to a year to finish, I got it done in a matter of 2 months.

The lesson I got from that. It does not matter how much money your getting paid, you still have to take breaks, and they don't have to be long breaks, just enough time to let yourself breathe alil.

Turning off the brain for 10 to 15 minutes every hour does the trick for me now.

Take it from me, burnout sucks!

I've always been a loner, especially when I first heard about IM. At first I wanted to be behind the scenes and never deal with anyone. I'm slowly changing (Jesus gets most the credit though) and figuring out that the best part of life is really about relationships.

Then I learned that business is really about relationships. Being a loner doesn't really pay off, at least it hasn't for me. So I'm trying to be a better friend to all people, in my personal and business life (prospects/customers/competition, etc.)

In my opinion the best way to build a business (whether online or anywhere) is to build relationships with people so you can figure out how to help them. So I'm working on that.

I admire your dedication, focus and clarity.

However, in my humble opinion the reason I love internet marketing is the freedom of schedule so I CAN spend time with family and friends, on their schedule not mine. I can work till 3am, it's not always practical for family and friends to be available then.

There is always more money to be made, another goal to hit. Enjoying the journey as well as the destination is very fulfilling.

Again, just my opinion, and i wish you Godspeed.

      Cheers,

Friends and family often ask if I am lonely working from home, they even joke that my christmas work night out will be a quiet one !

But you can't beat the freedom, that's the main thing that keeps you focused when you have those bad days as you remember they could be a lot worse in many ways.

My internet was down for about 2 months while I was moving home and I found it a nice change to use the library and just have a change of scenery .

You are driven, and I respect that! I'm cheering you on to meet your goals!

I can totally relate. Some days I have to force myself to take a lunch break.

But I've made online friends and I am having fun now chatting here and there on Twitter or Skype.

I just found out my best friend is leaving her job and starting her own online business so I'm looking forward to having someone in the real world who can relate to me.

      Best of luck.

I know the feeling of being under the gun and feeling like you have to marathon it. But you will be more successful if you balance out your life. Take a walk, go out with a friend, go to the gym. These things are what refill your well. And if you don't refill it, you will soon run out of the water of success that is going make you desert blossom like a rose!

    Take time!

  • I can relate to what you are saying. I can find myself spending way too much time in front of the computer and not taking the time to enjoy seeing the sunshine. But if you have a laptop then take it outside. Also, I am addicted to Facebook!! I have met some wonderful people there and we share all the time. Sometimes I let myself get too distracted with Facebook and Twitter. You have to take some time away from it or find another way to make the best of both worlds are you might burn out. So be careful of that!

I did the same years ago, i didn't go on holiday or going out with friends too much.

They told me i was crazy to stay at home. But now i have been able to go on holiday every year for the last 8 years with a minimum of two months.

I escape the winters in Holland. And this year we're traveling for 8 months (6 months on the road already). Today we arived in Suluwesi for diving :-) The 7th country this year.

Philippines was great also, stayed there for 2 months, kitesurfing, diving, snorkeling and island hopping lol. Every one says i'm lucky when i tell them what i do, they all want my job they say ... I just silently smile and agree with what they say :-)

go for it.. you'll be the last one to laugh

I work about 7 hours a week at the moment. But I'll tell you this... previous to this lifestyle I worked ridiculously hard.. I would fall asleep with my laptop on my lap... then wake up and go straight back onto it and work throughout the day... it was no lifestyle at all..

Last 2 weeks I've been traveling around Thailand only checking on my laptop for sales. The first sale of the day pays for my hotel for the night - it's a great feeling. It didn't come easy... and I guess I will have to put more hours into my online businesses in the future to sustain this..

Only reason I'm on here now is because I've had flu for the last few days... every cloud

My advice is learn everything about one thing and take direct action. Once a 'system' is set up you can tweak it to run on autopilot.

Yes I totally understand. It's beautiful out here in California and the other day the weather was just perfect. Right now it is 7:41 am and before that I woke up at 12:00 am, worked went to sleep, woke back up at 3:00 am worked went back to sleep. Marketing your website is beyond a full time job, but also being a mom is full time for me with a baby, and working paying the bills is also. This is definitely a sacrifice with little immediate results. SEO marketing takes a lot of time and you have to be obsessed with it to make it to the top, otherwise you become lazy, distracted and nothing gets done.

Personally, it suits me just fine. I get more done on my own.

Think of it from this angle, for the other 250 days that we have horrible weather, you get to get out of bed and go to work whilst all your friends are slugging around at 7am with horrible traffic

One of the reason I go for IM is the time freedom. Where we are free to manage when to work and when to play. I know some of you are thinking about work hard now, play later. But for me, I'd rather choose to balance both of them.

It'll slow me down to achieve the financial and time freedom, but I'm cool with that. I used to be 30 hours non stop working guy when I first started. But now, I'm balancing my time. When I go offline, I hang out with my friends, but when I go online, I also chat with my friends.

Nothing better than listening to what other people are thinking about. You'll need that in order to launch something people really need and want to pay for.

It's a great idea to work outside our house. I have a netbook that I always carry around, just in case some urgent matter happen, and I cannot deal with it using just my phone. I recommend personal mobile ISP, rather than a public wifi, since there are so much known security vulnerabilities on public wifi.

Consider buying yourself a VPN if you are going for public wifi at fav coffee shop or public place. It will be nasty if someone there sniff your data and somehow get your password to any account that has been linked to your credit card.

Feel free to take a break sometimes. You can try to act like you do work in a company. Set your work hours, plan your lunch break, but by all means stick with it. One of the greatest benefits of Internet Marketing is time management and you should take that advantage

Yes, I need to start reinvesting my money back into my business. Thus far I've only been keeping all the money and reinvesting more of my time and effort.

The least I can do is make full use of my expertise. To dedicate my time only to the things that I am good at, which includes learning, understanding a subject and then feeding that understanding to others. So I should only spend my time writing good, quality articles for syndication, and outsourcing everything else.

Ultimately though, I think one should outsource all technical aspects of a business, even one's area of expertise.

It's hard though, making that first step of spending the money you earn back into your business. Unlike you Julie I'm living on only my IM income. But I know that I need to make that change if I am to take my IM career to the next level.

It's nice to see that you have started to outsource yourself. Your post has been more helpful to me than you know.

Thanks. Being rich would be nice, but not at the expense of my freedom. That's the direction I was heading in with my previous job.

      --------------------------------------------------

A lot of replies here about taking the time to smell the roses. Sound advice and you all have my thanks.

I'm not a complete hermit. I do now take the time to exercise and see my friends from time to time. But not as much as I would like. I have so many dreams and passions I want to pursue, but those will have to wait. Some sacrifices DO have to be made.

These are tough financial times for all of us. We are having to work harder now to earn a living than ever before. If you are in my shoes then know this...

It is the extent of your hard work that will set you apart from everyone else. The work you put in WILL eventually pay off, you just have to keep at it. But like everyone else here is saying, don't burn yourself out. Do exercise and socialize to look after your physical and mental health.

It sucks that I can't do everything I want to do, but I do take the time to do the things I need to do to keep me going as long as I need to achieve success.

No! Stop it! You need to get away from it for a little rest and recuperation
or both you and the work suffer. Worse, it puts a strain on relationships with family and friends that isn't worth it.

Set up a schedule and stick to it. Allow a little flexibility so you WILL have time for emergencies and special events - especially if you have school age children. Go for optimum time instead of maximum hours. (Both these techniques will boost your productivity once you take control and have adjusted to the "new, improved" priorities.)

I know exactly what you mean snow predator, I have recently started out in IM and am no where near making a income from it that will support my lifestyle. I find that it is difficult to talk to friends and family about it as I get the feeling that they see it as a hair brain idea, which is really frustrating because when you are excited about something all you want to do is talk about it. When I started to learn about IM I was a total novice and the 2 weeks I booked off work for holiday was spent glued to my computer for about 14 hrs a day just learning, my wife really did not understand and when she would say "all he has done all day is sit in front of that laptop" I would cringe because it made me sound like some sort of out of control gaming. About 1 month on I still spent a lot of time on the computer but have tried to balance it with going to the gym and spending time with my wife, still a bit imbalanced though if I'm honest but I do have a plan as I keep telling my wife.

I hope you're not overdoing it because rejuvenation is just as important as full engagement - if not more. Just recently I heard of the book "The Power of Full Engagement" where they researched what sets apart the top tennis players from the almost top tennis players. And the top tennis players were in the habit of almost immediately after the set was over release the racket from their hand and stretch it in order for them to regain life force - over time this can have a big impact.
I also did the mistake of spending weeks in front of the computer without going out with friends - and you know what? I actually made less money then because what does it display? Lack of belief. Lack of confidence. Lack of trust in yourself and the universe's ability to orchestrate everything for you.

Your dreams are not like a fish that you must hold doggedly to in order for you to catch them - you can simply launch an intention and then watch the universe deliver the path for you - when it feels like work then it's most likely not the path of least resistance to the fulfillment of your dreams. I'm not saying you don't need to have an indormable will but letting go is just as important as being fully involved.
