Be Careful Upgrading Your Blog to WP 3.1

There are many reports of redirection problems upgrading to WP 3.1.
In Firefox you'll get a message:
"Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

Chrome gives a similar message, but IE just hangs.

I'm having the problem only when I try and view one of my blog's categories, but many people are having it when they try and go to their wp-admin or view any of their blog at all. There are some plugins that will help, depending upon the kind of server you're running, but that could be a problem when they fix it.

Any real WP gurus care to chime in on this one?

Strange. I've never had this problem. And I used the auto-upgrade feature too.

    Steve,

Hey a fellow Washingtonian. I updated to WP 3.1 and had absolutely no problem. But I imagine those that do have a problem, have plugins which have not been updated.

To find out which one might be causing the conflict, deactivate all plugins and then add one back in at a time until you find the one causing the problem.

Aside from that, maybe check if the theme is compatiable also.

Hey, Soap Lake, I used to go up there when I lived in the Tri-Cities.

Thanks everyone.I thought I had updated all my plugins, but maybe I missed one I read quite a few horror stories out there from people that upgraded to 3.1 and could no longer get back in to their WP-admin dashboard. That would really suck. Some people even went through quite a bit of uninstalling and reinstalling to try and fix things. It seems like either plug-ins or an issue with some Windows servers, permalinks, and canonical redirects is causing the problem.

Had the problem once and it ended up being due to a plugin conflict. Best way to figure out the deal is to deactivate all plugins and then reactivate each one individually until you find the one with the issue. At which point you may want to email the developer of the plugin to let them know there is a conflict with the new Wordpress update.

      Mine are all fine too.

I would take the advice given by two of the posters and check out all of your plug-ins.

      Just my thoughts,

      Jeff.

I have had one of my themes that went a little 'sideways', but I updated the issue and all is well.

Some themes and some plugins will need to be updated when you go to 3.1 or the sites will 'break' otherwise.

If issues arise, deactivate all plugins and switch to the default 2010 theme and isolate the issue, then go from there.
