Can I get your advice on niches please?

I have a friend slash client who wants to get into affiliate marketing.

He's a 30 year vet in California law who now lives here in North Carolina, but is not familiar with NC law. Plus, he wants to stay away from anything in the legal field, so that niche isn't an option.

He left it up to me to find a profitable niche, but one that is moral, legal, etc.

I've looked in all the usual spots, such Google trends, SEO Book keyword search, Google Adwords Keyword Tool, etc etc

My problem is that there seems to be conflicting information on monthly searches and thus what is popular.

I have narrowed it down, I hope, to holistic health (with a few sub-niches) and solar energy/power (solar panels et al).

Are those truly popular niches?

Do you have any other suggestions? I know he won't go for the "dating, credit", etc type niches. He's looking for tangible products to affiliate market, especially those that are from big companies.

This friend is NOT afraid to work. But he needs to be affiliate to a niche now (in the future others will be added) that will pay very well from the get-go.

My experience is with smaller niches that appeal to me personally (not especially money makers) ... but not with the bigger ones when someone else is depending on my choices.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

My personal experience and opinion is that solar energy (and really any alternative energy) is huge, getting bigger every day, and has fantastic long-term potential, in the US and globally.

There's a growing number of affiliate products to promote. Amazon is a great place to find a wide variety of physical niche products, and an easy place to start with. It's also got lot's of name recognition, so consumers are comfortable buying from them.

Another plus with the alternative energy niche is that there's a lot of ongoing news to post about in your blogs.

      Audre,

Thank you so much for validating. I'm highly interested in the solar power/energy niche myself, so I was hoping it was a good one to go for.

And you're right about the blog - definitely something we're going to do for his site.

Barbara, you're welcome! The holistic/alternative health market is growing, too. It's part of the "green living" revolution that's happening all over the world.

What I personally like about these markets is that it really feels good to be promoting products that are doing some good for the planet.

Sorry, digital ... wasn't sure what you mean (not reading between lines too well tonight) ...

Are you saying it's a viable long-term profitable niche or something that's too expensive product-wise and won't go far?

        sorry, i like the niche

2 things I love in a niche are

        1. physical products

        2. expensive products

expensive usually = higher commissions for me

Barbara, he's saying people are really buying them (like he did), and that solar panels (one of the alternative energy niches) is a high-ticket item, so there's good profit potential.

I also see that digitalreporter has eBay links in his sig...wonder if he bought his solar panels on eBay? (eBay is another good site to affiliate with.)

these came from amazon but I love ebay also, two of my favorite affiliate merchants

I've actually been thinking of making an affiliate site for solar panels that focused on ebay based on my buying experience lately, I'll keep the idea to myself though

Thank you ALL for validating my thought processes. It helps to make sure I'm on the right track.

I thought these two niches were viable, but the numbers were giving me pause. But knew there had to be something in them.

I had already found some affiliate programs for both holistic health and solar energy ... off to find some more so he has plenty to choose from.

Thank you for mentioning Amazon.com - I typically forget the obvious *grins*

Guilty as charged! There are so many threads where I know nothing at all about the topic...it's nice to find one that I do know something about and can be genuinely helpful!

My biggest problem with these niches is focus: there are so many great niche possibilities, it's a real challenge to choose only a manageable few.

...and I noticed the alternative healing links in your sig...(I'm a big believer)...isn't it great to be able to make a living online promoting products and services that fit with your ethics? That's why I love these niches so much! Glad you're coaching your client in this direction!

wowzer, imho they should be at the top of your list. I had my first $500 day with amazon this month. I wish they all could be like that now

don't forget not just using ebay/amazon but also targetting your uk users also.

the #2 visitor on most websites comes from the uk, ebay does uk and amazon has a seperate program amazon.co.uk that pays (in pounds)

Hmmm, so I'm back to 50/50 : holstic/natural remedies and the solar/alternative energy niches. Both have equal backing thus far.

My biggest worry with the natural remedies is liability issues - putting up the proper disclaimers in case those we refer become sick off of a company's product - that the affiliate can also be sued because they recommended the company and product(s).

However, my client does want to have others down the road, so that's not to say natural remedies/holistic still isn't at the top of the list.

I guess I'm supposed to be doing this research tonight - have hit a goldmine of info that I was struggling to get other nights ... not just from here at WF, though you guys have helped IMMENSELY! Time to get some snacks and refill my drink - gonna be a long and rewarding night so I can present my report tomorrow.

Go for digital products with "additive" nature. Things like Dog Training, Games Tricks (many different types of games), Forex, Stocks Trading etc. People will keep on buying and buying because there is never enough.
