What was your first Big mistake in IM and what did you lose / learn?

Most of us get into IM to make quick money. We learn few methods and want Dollars in our bank account. It usually doesn't happen and we try to bend the rules.

My first big mistake was when I used Google Adwords to bring traffic to my CPA offers sales page. I was able to bring good traffic daily but I had two offers on the landing page and main focus was on different offer than the one advertised on Google Adwords.

I thought I am smarter, but in a few days Google sent me a polite warning and stopped my ad. I immediately changed the landing page and replied to Google that i would adhere to their rules and guidelines. I think i was lucky, they did not close my account.

Since then I read and follow Google's rules whether Adsense or Adwords or any other product.

For me personally, the biggest mistake I made (way back in 07') was allowing a personal issue which I knew what the outcome (Divorce) was going to be, to take away from the motivation I had after making my first sale and then lingering longer then needed to get that motivation back!

From that experience though, I've learned that no matter how good life can be, there are things that will happen in your life that you, nor anyone else for that matter, can control and you just need to keep your head down and keep moving forward with whatever goals/dreams you've laid out for yourself and never let them fade away!

Banners! I needed more banners, because with more banners, I'd get more sales right?

After that sucked, I tried adsense... which also sucked.

I switched to offering a free report to build a list and recommending affiliate offers, and it's been money in the bank every since.

You are right. I also had many banners on my landing page. Now I have either none or max one.

I remember my first big mistake very well! That's a few years back now.

I saw a program called "TheRichKids" or something and I believed in all the fancy pictures with guys getting paid thousands etc.

Well the program itself cost only something around $ 30, can't remember exactly. But I lost over $ 400 for advertising following their instructions. And now I bet they got a lot of money because they made you buy your advertising over their affiliate links.

Oh well, what can you do, if you are a total newbie and don't know nothing about the whole thing?

my first one regarding money and the Internet was, not buying as many one word domains as I could afford back when only a few of us knew what a domain was....

Yep you learn alot when you buy other IMers products for money that don't deliver. Spending money in this market has never been a problem! That's why it spurs you on to produce your own high quality, original product.

My first week online I actually signed up to be an affiliate with a program that I had to PAY to be an affiliate for. LOL - that lasted two, three months max before I got more savvy than that. Then I turned around and paid someone up front to build a site for me. OOPS.

All tolled I lost less than $500.00 so I guess the lessons came cheap compared to some I've seen others learn.

Ahem! I had my share of mistakes. My biggest early mistake was Adwords. I blew a small fortune before I learned to test my strategies using free method first.

Thank God it wasn't my last money but simply an expensive lesson.

The biggest mistake that I made was going years without building a list. tens of thousands of sales later, I came to my senses. What did I lose? I don't even want to think about it. Thankfully, I came to my senses around 2005. Then it took me another year to start mailing regularly... another huge mistake!

Newbies should start building their list the day they start in this field.
