How many monthly searches?

I would like to make a niche site. and was wondering while doing my research, how many monthly searches should i be aiming for? I am a noob. and this is going to be my first real site.. so any insight that would help me test the waters of IM would be much appreciated.

    IMHO it's not about monthly searches, but the competition for #1-3. The stronger these sites, the less chance you've got of getting the traffic - regardless of the monthly searches.

    Okay! thanks! from what i can tell.. the #1-#3 are not even focused on my niche.. they just happen to mention it a few times.

    You must see how many backlinks the top three sites have. If they have thousands of backlinks you will find greener pastures elsewhere. Yahoo Link Explorer is a good tool for this.

    Other things to keep in mind: PR, aged domains, exact match domains and SEO (like keywords in title) are important as well.
