A place to buy old/used domains

I went through the godaddy auction program but couldn't sign up to it (some payment processing problem) and so that's a closed door for me. Namecheap's marketplace does not have good domains either and all are way pricey.

Any better alternatives where quality domains are sold for good prices?

Use something like DropDay.com. This is what I use. It aggregates all the domains dropping just about anywhere. The big 3 are SnapNames, NameJet, and Pool. It is usually $69 for a dropped domain from these places.

That is a good one as well. Do you pay for it?

You can, but don't have to. I don't. Just click the tab "reg fee" when you do your search and set all your criteria, like which extensions you want, how many letters in the domain you want ... those are in the right column. Then click search and if you find a gem, and there are often a lot of gems, just register it for reg fee.

I use Flippa, you can find some steals in there but there is also a lot of junk.
