max number of websites / blogs ?

Hi

Say once you get started creating sites, what do you all think is the max number of websites / blogs you could realistically have in order to keep tabs on them and monitor them ?

    A very rich man told me once: The people who make the most money don't have the most sites. They have the most traffic.

    See, building sites is easy. Building profitable sites is not. So maybe build a handful of sites that you can really nurture and see what happens. I used to have dozens of sites but that was all a waste, I make a lot more money by focusing on 3 or 4.

      I agree with the sentiment of this perfectly. I work in just a few niches for this reason. But...

      While I only have 4 sites I would consider my *prime* sites, I do have other blogs, Web 2.0 sites, and content locations which feed into these sites.

      Depending on how you read the OP, the answer could be wildly different. I could claim I only have 4 sites, or I could state I have approximately 40 places I put content. Both answer are right.

      36 of those locations get limited attention with only scheduled updates. Sites outside of those primary sites are all setup within Posterous so I can update multiple content areas simultaneously.

      Now, does that make my answer 4 or 40?

      Personally I look at it as 4 niche sites with SEO/traffic funnels.

    I agree - the idea of building hundreds of sites and making a couple of dollars a day off each may be very tempting. But in reality most people lose track, they lose interest, and they waste their time. I really regret trying to go down this route myself - I am sure I'd be a lot better off now if I'd focused on just a few in the beginning.

    Use some of the money they make you to hire someone else to monitor them.

    When you have too many people monitoring them, hire a manager to keep track of those people.

    When you have too many managers, hire an upper-level manager to keep track of them.

    When you have too many upper-level managers, hire a top-level manager.

    Figure one person can manage thirty websites, and one manager can manage ten people, that's 3,000 sites per upper-level manager. So that top-level manager is ultimately responsible for 30,000 sites.

    It is possible to have 100+ sites, you can cycle through them with promotion. You can also use tools to automate some of the stuff. Web submissions and social bookmarking are easier because you can maximize your time.

    Hey thanks for your input guys

    your advice seems to be trying to earn more from less sites which seems sensible.

    if you had 'set and forget' sites that earned money from their seo position so you didnt really have to do much once they were set up, then wouldn't the amount of traffic max out at the amount people searched for it ? to gain more traffic might be harder to acquire then ?

    Barry - are your 40 places you post content, sites you own and/or earn money from ?
    if so then you would have 40 site esp if they get traffic and you have to pay costs (like domain names) for having them

      For each of those 4 niches I own approximately 4 domain names. Those are all Wordpress blogs. 1 is for primary content and is where the real promotion happens.

      The other 3 are just feeder sites with good quality content, linking towards the primary site, and being more lenient about outgoing links. They do have minor monetization to the affiliate product, but not a big push.

      The rest of the content areas are all free sites which are just used as part of the SEO/Traffic funnel. It is a mix of video, image, and Web 2.0/free blog services.

      You can identify all of them very easily by looking at Posterous. I tend to only use sites I can connect to using their autopost function. Then I can take care of creating and posting content from one place instead of logging into all of them. No free sites are monetized at all. They are only used to widen my exposure and link structure I control.

      Almost every cent I earn through this setup comes from the 4 primary sites, not the feeder blogs. It is very rare they convert a sale, since I'm not really attempting to close sales on them.

      Keep in mind, this structure is not where the majority of my traffic comes from. The traffic comes from articles which are ranked on my blog, traffic from syndicated content, and a trickle from the EzineArticles and Articlesbase. The structure is to help support the ranking of the articles on those 4 primary sites, not to become the highly ranked sites.

    For me I would have to cap it at about 5 or 6 sites...that's if you want to manage them yourself and be able to add quality content to them on a regular basis (daily if possible).

    Obviously if you outsourced the content creation and even the management you could manage quite a few more.

    I have tried having multiple micro-niche sites in the past but I now prefer to concentrate on creating a couple of much larger niche sites than many smaller ones. I like to write my own content as much as possible and just couldn't keep up with more than a few sites at once.

    It all depends on what method you prefer...outsourcing a lot of the work (more sites) or doing it yourself (less sites).

    We have a little company and we have concentrate and work only on 15 to 20 sites maximum at a time, which results enough money returns for us. :rolleyes:

    if your niche sites are profitable, then U have more chances to make more money with it.. Otherwise may be little or nothing. Use market smaurai for researching profitable niche search and for keywords..
