Wait... I actually made some money?!

That's right.

And it came as a huge surprise. I first came across Internet Marketing about a year or so ago and since then have failed multiple times.

Around Christmas time I made my first ever sale through Amazon Affiliates and since then have made maybe 2 more sales from my DJ Review Site. I think the reason for my bad conversions rates have been down to the look of the site as well as the products I chose and my reviews. However, I could not be bothered to change that website and make it the best it could be and moved on to other projects deeming that one to failure.

Since Christmas, I have also set up a website which is aimed at launch-jacking the release of a new game, Fear 3. I have high hopes for this website as I am achieving position 2 and 3 in Google for my main keyword. However, the game isn't to be released until May.

This brings me to something I have been up to recently and more importantly this image:

$67.96 in ONE DAY. If I could sustain this amount of income each day and potentially build on it then I'm looking at venturing full-time income areas which is very exciting for me.

So what have I done?

They tell you that you should always stick to what you're good at, what you love. Sitting at home doing my latest Stress Analysis work for my Masters Degree in Engineering and I'm wondering why I ever decided to do Engineering in the first place.

My parents will tell you that I've always wanted to be an Engineer, ever since I was young and in some ways that is true. I have a very curious mind. How does that work? Why does this happen? However, I seem to remember the majority of my childhood playing games and doing things on the internet.

I mean, I remember learning how to create very basic websites and use Photoshop at the age of 12. What 12 year old's do you know that spend their time doing Photoshop tutorials to make images for their 'clan' on an MMO? Probably not many.

I get the feeling I am digressing.

I was browsing a forum related to a game that I played as a kid and still dabble in from time to time now and saw a section where people could sell guides.

12 Hours later and I had produced, what I think, is a beautiful guide packed with easy to understand information on how to make lots of money on the game. I put a post up on the forum selling my guide and thought nothing more of it. I had written mainly because I wanted to share the all the information I had gained across the years of playing the game and it was fun to write.

After a few slow sales of my guides at a discounted price I began to get feedback. It seemed people have been loving my guide and getting success from using it. This slowly built up until I had the $67.96 day.

My message is this:

Don't force yourself to do something you're not interested in. Don't try to sell 'How to get 6 pack Abs' guides if you don't take your own abs seriously. Stick to selling things you're interested in, whether you're creating a product or selling one as an affiliate.

I hope my small success may also inspire others.

Now I come to you warriors asking for help going forwards. I'm currently working on writing some copy for this guide I wrote (It kinda sucks, I will be turning to the copywriting forum for advice on it after my first draft) and am unsure how to set up selling my guide on clickbank.

I'd like, if possible, a free wordpress theme (I'm only really familiar with using Wordpress) with customisable headers and footers that I can change to my owns graphics that I'll design. I've looked around briefly but not found much I can use that will allow my own graphics in the header etc.

After this, I'll have to try and choose a keyword for my domain and then create the site. I'm assuming I have to make a thank you and download page and then I can submit my product to Clickbank and start recruiting affiliates.

Exciting times, hopefully I can make this work and release my first ever product.

Thanks for all the help since I've been on these forums!

Matt

  • Do you not fear any legal actions for having that domain?

    Sorry for the pun

      For buyfear3.com?

No, I don't fear any legal actions. Why? Because I am selling their game for them. If I was Warner Bro's, to me it would be silly to shut down a website that is promoting one of my products...

I don't mean this to sound nearly as churlish as it's going to, but try telling that to all the people who've been on the receiving end of lawsuits and domain seizures from companies like Sony for marketing Sony products using a trademark in their domain.

Did you know that companies have an obligation to defend their trademark on being notified that someone's using it? Holding a trademark confers obligations, in law, as well as rights. So it doesn't actually matter whether it's "silly to you". Just saying ...

This thread, started 10 minutes ago by a lawyer, might interest you.

PS Congratulations on making some money. (But it still might pay you to keep quiet about the domain-name with someone else's trademark in it!).

          Hi Alexa,

Did you ever consider going to law school?

I wouldn't want to be in a case against you.

          You make a good point.

Worst Case scenario and they demand all money I've made. I still haven't lost anything, except some time and a small domain fee.

I doubt however this will happen. I've seen a lot of people use trademarks in the name and get away with it whilst making money.

I guess it's a risk, but one that I'm very willing to take.

What if you got away with it for 2 years, made $500,000 and changed your life around?

I'd call that losing more than a domain fee and time.

You may doubt it but that has nothing to do with reality. I've seen lots of people use trademarks and loose everything.

Either way you look at it, you don't own what you're building. It's not considered good advice and claiming you thought it was ok, won't stand up in court.

I guess it's a risk, but one that I'm very willing to take.
Good for you. Bear in mind though, you're saying this on a public forum with over 250,000 members. You'll get away with it longer by not shouting it from the roof tops.

Richard, it's always easy to take that casual "easy come, easy go" approach when you're first starting out, because you're hardly making anything at this stage. When you really contemplate what is potentially at stake here, then you start wondering if it's even worth fooling around with a trademarked domain in the first place.

The OP is considering sprucing up his sales copy, in addition to changing the look and feel of his website, perhaps through a theme change and additional graphics. Is it even worth all the effort and also money to transform this site into a prime money-maker, only to face the prospect of litigation and having it snatched away from under his nose at any time?

Being in this tenuous situation would be very uncomfortable, and you can bet your bottom dollar that the trademark holder is going to sit up and take notice if this site starts getting popular, and visitors start streaming in consistently to it.

                Well said Paul.

It always amazes me when the OP gets excellent advice and there are countless threads by experienced Warriors on the subject here but the OP comes back with...

I doubt however this will happen. I've seen a lot of people use trademarks in the name and get away with it whilst making money.
Just because the OP's seen other people get away with it doesn't make it right and it doesn't mean he'll get away with it.

Still, he's willing to take the risk that Monolith productions, sold to Warner Bros, a subsidiary of Time Warner, in 2004, will be happy he's using their property.

Amazing isn't it. Actually breaching a company like Time Warners trademark and thinking they'll be happy about it.

Optimizepress looks really good. However, not sure I can justify spending $97 on it just yet.

Do you know if it's possible to have no sidebars using Flexibility 3?

    Hi Hoody,

First off, Congratulations on your success.

I think I have a cool recommendation for a wordpress theme that has a customizable header you can use pretty easily. It's the one I use just now, though I don't currently have my own customized header graphics in there yet (soon though!).

It's called Modern Style 1.2 it's not my own theme, just the one I use and it's free pretty neat and has a customizable header and social media share button and sidebar etc. pretty neat.

Check out the look for it you might like it. I'd link to my own site for you to look at it, but I'm not sure about the rules of linking to your own page in a post.

I also think it does really help if you're in a niche where you really do have an interest, as if you aren't interested in it, it can get kinda boring. I know from experience.

Again, Congratulation on the $67.96 day! Next step up is $100 days on a regular basis!

Up and at 'em! Good Luck!

      Hi Hoodyy,
Contrats on your success. Are you using any plugin to compare prices on your buy fear 3 site or is it hard coded? Thanks

I love "Launch-Jacking".. I do that all the time.. works great as a strategy.
WORST case scenario is you get a cease and desist letter.. at which point you close the site..

But if you are promoting (positively) another product.. most of the time the product owner wont mind.

Try telling that to all the people who've been on the receiving end of lawsuits and claims for every penny they've made for the site, rather than just C&D letters. Plenty of them have posted here about it.

You can easily change the domain name, you cannot easily defend your position when a Fortune 500 company goes after you. Do the smart thing now. But... great job congratulations but get it clean NOW!

Thanks Hoodyy, you post had the answer I come onto WF 2nite as I have been trying to promote products that I have no interest in using sniper sites. Now I now if I perceiver with this that I will make money but I just don't have the passion in what i'm working in. Now I know that a lot of the things you have to DO in IM involves "boring" tasks but if your doing it in a niche you love then your on the right track. I know there are lots of counter arguments to this - but this puppy is goona follow the passion and drop those how to cure your tinitus problems.

        Hey Hoodyy,

        Keep it up!

Start really pressing on with PPC and find the sweet spot that allows you to get more clients and a higher conversion rate.

The keyword has a lot to do with it.

If your site is converting well enough then by all means start testing it with some new keywords.

    Well done mate,

    Good luck with your launch,

For the free Wordpress Theme, I would recommend EASEL, it looks fantastic and is one of the most customizable I have come across. As someone else mentioned, FLEX3 is good too.

    Congrats on the sales!
Isn't it wonderful how easy it is to write a guide/report/ebook or whatever when it's a subject you are interested in? Not only is it easier to write, your genuine interest in the subject shines through and people like it!

Thanks for sharing and good luck with future sales.

    Cheers,
