Confused about CTR and Conversion Rate

For affiliate marketing, is the conversion percentage based on the total visitors to a site or only those who clicked through an affiliate link? If its the latter, then the conversion is really just a fraction of a fraction.

I am just trying to figure out how much total traffic I need to target in order to make my sales goal, based on average conversion rates.

CTR or Click thru Rate simply means the ration of visitors to a page, to visitors that took the desired action.

In other words, how many people when to the page vs. how many of them that took the action you wanted them to take.

Conversion rate typically deals with buyers and non-buyers. If a sales page has a 2% conversion rate, that means that 2 out of 100 people purchased the product/service and 98 didn't.

    Hope that helps

I guess what I am really wondering is, what is the average ratio of visitors to a clickbank review site to sales?

Depends on traffic source, if the traffic is pre sold, etc. Depends on the offer, the pricing, the copy, the colors, etc.

What may be an average for me, may be extremely low for you.

I wanted to base my keyword research on conservative estimates of conversion. Assuming you secure #1 in google for the keyword, and you only get about half of searchers clicking on your link. Would a 1% visitor conversion be a reasonable expectation as long as the page doesn't completely suck?

It usually takes anywhere between 20 and 100 visitors to make one sale at clickbank. That is through presell pages and pay per click. Presell page visitors usually have higher conversion ratios than pay per click visitors. That's because sometimes the pay per click visitor is so overloaded with information they become "tire kickers" or people who leave the website quickly because of lack of interest.
