Ideas to monetize product name domain?

I managed to bought a domain product-name[dot]com, the product itself is "Product Name" and its domain is productname[dot]com. I'd think this is a great domain but not sure how to best monetize it.

Right now it just redirects to the original product's domain with my affiliate link attached, and write an article in my other site with keyword "product name" and point it to the domain name. It's new so I've written only 1 article so far.

BUT doing this means the domain itself won't be ranked in search engine because there is no content on it. I checked other products where people buy .net or .org variations and seem they only have less than 10 "review" articles on it, some only has 2 articles with lots of banners on it.

Is this the best way to do it? Just write a couple of reviews and get backlinks like crazy?

Ideas?

I have a question. Is the product name you bought said domain name for a registered trademark? If not I would simply create a review site and promote the product with aff links. Build backlinks and watch the rise up the mighty serps.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

Yea this is very important. You could be otherwise sued or just simply risk losing the domain name.

What most people do with product domains is create Amazon affiliate sites. Although it is only a 4% commission, you can increase it with a volume of sales.

Another alternative would be to use Commission Junction, linkshare, google affiliate network, etc. to promote various companies products at a higher commish rate.

If you mean that you have bought a domain that is the same as a product brand name then I wouldn't use it and risk being sued.

If you mean that you have bought a descriptive domain like washing-machine.com and not Hotpoint-Aquarius.com then build a site with overviews of different models and useful information, videos etc. But gradually add decent content, bookmark it and gradually backlink but not like crazy.

  • Like the above folks said be careful if you are using a trade mark in your domain and if you have a site, which you must, in the url. (Google bot will probably notice this) None of us are lawyers if we are we are still not in a position to give you specific legal advice. But many of us have knowledge of these things. You really need to know the legal status of what your domain is before doing a lot of work.

If you can get permission, (In writing), like a license from the product name's owner then do so. If you can bring them business and they can protect their interests they may like the extra revenue you bring them. I have such an agreement with a company to use their product's name in a website's domain name. It cost me nothing and they are happy and I run an e-store for them also. (actually the way it's set up it's my e-store)

As to your initial question on additional monetization, if you are clear with the name situation and if the company has additional products or a catalog or a store, you can point to them with content and your affiliate link. That could be one additional way.

Just out of curiosity is your affiliate agreement directly with the product-name company or through another affiliate or an affiliate network. If a network they have a vested interest in your being profitable and you should have a manger assigned to you. Any one upline from you as an affiliate should be willing to help if you ask. If they won't you may want to do some soul searching before you spend hours of your life on this project.

My friend take all this for what it's worth. You might have a gold nugget in your hand. Do your due diligence on this. Good luck.

The product name is not trademarked. It's an IM product like, for example, commission-blueprint or mass-control or auto-traffic-ninja (the last one is purely an example, not sure if there is actual product). Do you think the owner will take legal action against me?

Old Dog, thanks so much for your input. I may contact the owner and check if it's ok to hold the domain. The affiliate agreement is directly with the company and there's no mention of this in the small prints when I joined their affiliate program.

Battra I have been a marketer since before the internet. In my opinon and it's always been very rewarding in the pocketbook and far less nerve racking for me, to be White Hat and open in dealing with others, clients, customers and even competitors.

Those that don't usually just flash and are gone. I would rather bring a site or an offline gig to a steady $5-600 a month for 5yrs, than a flash $2-3000 and be banned slapped or run out of town.

I have a marketing gig offline that I haven't really touched in many years and a check comes in every month. It has paid for the very nice house my family lives in.

Steady, easy and strong in for the long haul is my way. Ask the product owners, they may balk. It's better you find out now but on the other hand you might come out smelling like a rose! ....Good Luck!
