Starting a new affiliate site

Hello, I'm new to Warrior forum.

I'm looking to create a new site about learning guitar and I just thought I would float a few ideas to see if anyone had any ideas about the potential of site or could stop me from making mistakes and wasting my time.

Just to tell you a bit about myself I'm a graphic designer and I've been running my own site (on WordPress) for 5 years and now get 23,000 visitors a month. I don't make much money from it in terms of affiliate sales, etc., although all my client work has come from it - so you could say the site makes all my money.

I want to get into affiliate marketing and niche sites and I thought, in order to do something that was of interest to me, I could start with the learning guitar niche. I would like to start the link building by article marketing and targeting a few keyword phrases that use "learning" and "guitar".

I haven't found any products to promote yet but looking around CJ there seem to be plenty to choose from.

I was thinking of making the site multilingual.

I will be creating a free product as an incentive to join a mailing list. I'll use Aweber and have some sort of sequential auto responder.

I'll also be doing YouTube marketing.

So, I wondered what you guys thought? Am I going into this too blindly with too vague an idea about keyword research and without having decided on which products to sell?

    That's a great niche to get into because you can do so much. You could even eventually create your own product. Plus you can use youtube in a big way which is great. I briefly looked at learn guitar in the Google keyword tool (exact match) and there are a lot of keywords. Start with the keywords and go from there.

      Giving away a free product is a great way to build your list. You want to build trust with your readers and provide them with helpful information, before you start trying to pitch them any products.

      Step by step videos are a good learning tool and should be well received.

    By all means, look into other areas if you want but don't let it distract you from your core business - graphic design. Reason I say this is because you obviously have an authority site, and if you're only getting client work from it you're only utilizing a fraction of it's potential.

    Productize. I'm not sure what kind of product you could put together just based on your post, but what you want to do is move as much of your revenue from work-based earnings to product-based earnings. Sure, keep working hard but it's much easier to sell an information product than it is to complete a regular project.

    Once you free yourself from the time-for-money situation you'll have all the time in the world to look into other areas.

    Think about what you could contribute to the niche,.. what is it of value that people would appreciate??
    1) even if it's just a few but crucial tips,.. and you make a report (e-book) out of it... people subscribe and get it,... then you can send them more cool content and a few offers (look for great affiliate offers that you would appreciate also)
    2) sooner or later you will get a bigger idea and you will be able to create an awesome product and market it

    @skyla yes, free product first followed by premium product much later.

    @briancassingena, you make a really good point. I can guarantee that I will spend exactly the same amount of time on my main site every week for the foreseeable future. I realise that this is my main source of income so I won't be taking my eye off it in anyway. I have a 1,800 strong list from this main graphic design site and I will be releasing two premium products soon as well. But the results from affiliate links so far have been disappointing. I really am trying to move away from the time-for-money situation - this is my overall main goal at the moment.
