Post & pre-dating blog posts

Hi Warriors.
Is it OK to change the dates on blog posts.... does this really fool Google into thinking the blog is older than it actually is?
Thanks,
Charlie

I could be wrong, but I don't think Google sorts by how old the blog says it is. I think it can determine when the blog originally showed up in its search results. So changing the date on your blog will likely do nothing except fool visitors to it.

Well I know some people (myself included) use plugins such as "Old Post Promoter" to help promote older posts back up to the top by simply changing the post date to a more recent date. Although not exactly the same as what you're asking, I feel it helps to keep the blog looking more fresh to visitors. I do also personally backdate some posts when I'm just getting the blog started to help it look a bit more established to the earlier visitors. Whatever happens though, I'm sure it doesn't do any harm with Google. Whether they notice or not I don't know, but I have a few old blogs running with the plugin I mentioned and they only improve with age.

For Google it makes no difference, unless somehow you blog structure is so chaotic that they never indexed the post until it showed back up on the front page.

For readers, it can highlight some older, still relevant, content they may have missed before. personally i prefer Darren Rowse's Sneeze Page concept ( Create a Sneeze Page and Propel Readers Deep Within Your Blog ) to accomplish this. That way if they do remember the post from way back when, they don't feel like you are trying to pull one over on them.

Did you ever notice that “author” is the root of the word “authority“?
