Your take on Email marketing in 2011 and beyond...

I posed a question the other day about how to do a survey when you don't have a subscriber list for your ezine. After creating my survey, I asked a colleague of mine if she could run a blurb about my survey in her newsletter for her readers to take.

Here was her response, which could account for why I've only gotten FOUR opt-ins for my ezine after a YEAR:
"I never did an issue for my ezine. I was disappointed in the sign ups, so I felt it wasn't worth the effort. I plan to do more with FB, since from what I am hearing people really no longer check their emails. Everything is done through social media, like FB, Twitter and Linkedin. At least that is what the marketing experts are saying. It's because of the smart phones on the market that keep people connected. This is especially true of the younger generation and those with busy lives. They are narrowing down the methods they choose to receive information. Email happens to be one that is drying up. So that makes me less likely to feel like starting an ezine."
Now, maybe this just happens to be true in our industry - weddings - but I'm wondering how many others who are just starting out are having trouble with getting ezine subscribers as well?

I'm actually considering removing my ezine opt-in form from my website as well; I feel like it's taking up valuable real estate on my website where I could be putting something else in that space instead because it seems for my particular industry, instead of "the money is in the list" - with us it's "there is no money in the list" because there is no list!
