How Do You Delete Deadwood Subscribers in Aweber?

I've built up a list of about 300,000 opt ins in Aweber over a number of years. I clear out the unsubscribes once in a while to cut the Aweber monthly fees. However, I am sure that there are many thousands on this list who are still active subscribers, but who haven't opened a mailing for months.

I'd like to cut out the deadwood and focus on people who actually open messages - and cut my monthly Aweber fees down to size. Jeff Johnson mentioned a method for dong this in one of his videos, but I haven't been able to find any further information - and Aweber support is not very helpful on this matter.

Any ideas on how to do this? Ideally, I would like to delete anyone who has not opened a message from the list in the last three months.

You can do this easily by following these steps:

    * select your list
    * click on the Subscribers tab
    * click the Select Field drop down menu
    * select No Opens
    * set the date to 30 days earlier
    * click Search

This will allow you to create a segment of your list
with subscribers that didn't open any of your follow ups
or broadcasts in the last 30 days.

You can then simply erase those subscribers.

    Hope this helps.

I recommend you do NOT use the above method at all.

      Why?

There are some people who DO open and read your
e-mail but they don't get registered as an open via
      their e-mail client.

For example, I normally use Microsoft Outlook to view
my e-mails and by default it doesn't allow the open
rate tracking images to be triggered without my
      permission.

So even though I open and read the e-mails, I could
appear on the 'no open' list and my e-mail address will
      get deleted.

Thanks Shaun for pointing that out!

However, I'm not that sure many subscribers
use email clients... and even if they do
what if the offer is bad and doesn't convert?

You would delete all those accounts just
because they didn't take action on one offer?

I mean, the risk of unsubscribing someone
who actually follows my emails seems less
possible with the steps that I outlined and
        Aweber itself suggests.

Anyways, your tip is much appreciated!

        Thanks again,

        Cheers,

        Remi

Instead, I'd recommend sending some offers to your
list to see who is actually active. E.g. send them a
trackable link to view a report or video.

Use the trackable links to see who the most active
        subscribers are.

ALL subscribers use an e-mail client to view their
e-mail. By e-mail client, I mean things like Outlook,
          Thunderbird, GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.

Many e-mail clients do not allow the open rate
tracking pixel to be activated by default so even
if the subscriber opens and reads the e-mail - the
autoresponder software isn't allowed to track the
          activity.

(In Outlook, I need to manually choose to display
images in the e-mail for AWeber to be able to register
          my open).

If I had a list of 300k subscribers and wanted to find
the active ones, I would create a campaign to segment
the list out and let the active subscribers reveal
          themselves - by their actions.

E.g. I'd make a series of offers for people to get more
information on subject areas and get them to either
click on a trackable link - or join a new list.

Short-term, this would increase the number of list
members, but over time it would allow the active
population of the big list to be separated out from
          the deadwood.

Thanks Renu...that's what I was looking for. And having discovered that I SHOULD be able to do this, I checked with support at Aweber and found that I can't because we are on a legacy system...the No Open option doesn't exist for us.

However, upgrading to the new list would cost a small fortune as we send a LOT of mail...so I'll have to work around it for now.
