Ashley Madison website is the fastest growing social network it will surpass facebook! Morally speaking it is sleazy, but, genius idea at the same time. Ashley Madison website is for adulterers meet. How can we monetize this white hat? Currently it has 8.5 million members. Thoughts comments.

Become an affiliate and advertise the services on your site. That's about as white hat as you can get.

I make a couple hundred a month with the Ashley Madison affiliate program.

I have one site that runs their ad prominently in my sidebar. I need to promote that website more.

As far as Ashley Madison one day surpassing FaceBook, that is a bigger fantasy than me spending hot, sweaty, exciting nights with Minka Kelly... But hey, I can fantasize can't I?

This is more of a subniche that doesn't really fit in with mainstream tastes, but is nevertheless quite profitable. I just don't see this niche appealing to anywhere near as wide a demographic as Facebook does.

Ashley Madison has CPA offers on several CPA networks as well, and judging from the CPA payouts per lead this has got to be a pretty profitable enterprise.

LOL it will surpass Facebook? What on earth are you on about?

Do you honestly think there are more people looking to have affairs than just people looking to stay in touch with friends?

Monetize it by all means but don't come out with statements like that...

Exactly. Facebook has 500 million users. That statement is incredibly far from true, at least the "it will surpass facebook" part.

The fact 'Ashley Madison' makes money from this kind of thing is pretty sickening to me, and I personally wouldn't touch anything like this with a bargepole. But that's just me

Edit: The fact something like this has 8.5m members is disturbing enough, if it were to ever 'surpass Facebook' then I think I'd like to move to another planet altogether

I am curious how it will evolve if in fact the media is correct. I am thinking of ways we can take advantage. Perhaps advertise counseling, strengthening relationship books, dating offers with banner ads.

Looks like an exclamation mark to me not a question mark.

The point is, you're way off the mark.

I don't really have a problem with Ashley Madison or their ethics, if people want to have affairs that is their business not mine and if people want to live their life that way they shouldn't be judged in my opinion.

It will never get anywhere near Facebook - that's a fact.

So this website has 8+ million members, and Facebook has 500+ million members. Facebook 1, Other 0.
Google ADVERTISES through Facebook. Do they advertise on this Ashley Madison website? I didn't think so.
    Facebook 2, Other 0.
Facebook is estimated to grow by 700,000 accounts on average per day, through 2011. This means in 10 days, they have gained almost the same number of accounts as this Ashley madison website has in total.
    Facebook 3, Other 0.
Facebook is a place to find friends, meet people, advertise goods and services, play games, share stories/articles/content, and much more. Ashley Madison is a place to screw up your relationship.
    Facebook 4, Other 0.

So far, this fight is 1 sided. Facebook is rising quickly through the ranks of popular websites, and is currently in the #2 spot for Alexa rankings.

Lets check Alexa for some stats real quick...

Google is #1 on Alexa. Over 30% of google views are bounces that redirect to other websites. (Its a search engine, what do you expect). The average page view for Google is less than 40 seconds.

Facebook is #2 on Alexa. The average page view for Facebook... 32 MINUTES.

Ashley Madison is #3,184 on Alexa. Over 40% of page views from this site are bounces. The average page view for this website, 44 seconds.

This is just my opinion, but Ashley Madison is just another useless dating website that is going to get about as far as any other dating website. There isn't a single dating website in the top 100 of Alexa.

Remember 8.5M members may be very skewed. How many are active members? How many are multiple fake profiles by the same people? Alexa reports them having 700,000 unique visitors per month which sounds far different than 8.5M active members.

It must be noted that Ashley Madison is not the average dating site in more ways than one.

They do not require monthly subscriptions.

Instead, they let people buy communication credits.

That works well for most people who date online -- married or otherwise.

It works well, because people are only in the mindset of looking for love online from time-to-time. Maybe it is only occasional, because people are between girlfriends/boyfriends.

    Ok smart business people...

Ashley Madison at least has been in the green since conception, without the need for mllions in VC funding.

Also my bias to them is skewed because I earn about 400 dollars a day as there affiliate. Yea it is a sad world, but that doesn't mean you can't sell it.

There are actually studies done that prove that in some cases affairs have helped relationships or better a person. On top of that the divorce rates and society view on dismantling a marriage is so skewed now in comparison to the past I see this website to continue to grow and grow.

Will it beat facebook.... No... Will it make more money then twitter...yes

Same with gambling, alcohol, racking up debt - the list goes on.

Doesn't stop people from doing it.

I see nothing wrong with promoting Ashley Madison if you are supplying people what they are looking for. If you're talking happily married men/women into having affairs then maybe its not so ethical.

People are always going to spend their money on things that are not good for them, you mays well pick up a commission for their stupidity if you can still sleep at night.

With rumors of Facebook wanting to "surpass" Google I think this affairs site is not really in that league, although it is successful... just shows how many people crave this sort of thing. To monitize it would be to advertise it, $200 per signup, or $25 per female signup (not sure how that works, but ok)

No thanks :p It's clearly a very profitable niche with a hungry market and if anyone wants to promote it then it's their business - I just wish people in general(the actual buyers/customers I mean in this case) were more honest in the way they conduct themselves in their lives. Everyone has their different morals and values, that's what makes the world work.

If everyone here enjoyed promoting the next "push button" software clickbank product to their list then you wouldn't be able to trust anyone here.

8.5 million users vs 500 million? I think Ashley Madison is way behind the Facebook. Plus, you have to remember that Facebook is free and I think AM charges you some crazy dollars. Go ahead try to create a profile on AM. It's a dating website for cheaters, vs social network site with all the bells and whistles. Monetizing it I agree with some other posters - become an affiliate.

OK, from the parent company's website:

"Launched on Valentine's Day, February 14 2002, over 8 million people worldwide have since joined the top social network for married dating."

They've had more than 8 million members over the past 8+ years. BIG difference from having that many now.

Unfortunately, they seem to be a private Canadian company so I'm having trouble digging up more info quickly.

For the sake of simplicity, lets assume even growth. So you'd have about 1 million members now, which is on part with AdultFriendFinder, which is by far the largest of the general adult dating sites.

I know from my past research that AFF only converts about 1% of free subscribers to paid subscribers. The rest remain free members, who usually get frustrated at some point and stop coming back to the site--at least for the time being, many are active on and off over the years--or they're ewhores.

I know from anecdotal research, membership among the married members of AFF and AM overlaps a good deal, though they tend to be more active on one site than another.

Big trend? Yes. Opportunity? Yes. Going to replace FB anytime soon...nah.

Ashley Madison is in a niche market. Only a certain percentage of people are ever going to be interested in it.

Facebook is much more general in nature (though it did start as a niche).

There are lots of people that view an extramarital affair as immoral or improper or just wrong. They're not going to join Ashley Madison, but they might join Facebook.

In order for Ashley Madison to surpass Facebook, you'd first have to have marriage as a concept completely shattered. It may not be as strong as in years past, but it is hardly something that going the way of the dodo. And, as long as a significant portion of the population values marriage, Ashley Madison cannot surpass Facebook.

The only way that Ashley Madison could realistically surpass Facebook is if Facebook turns into another MySpace and people start leaving in droves. Ashley Madison, as it is, simply cannot surpass Facebook unless Facebook enters a downward spiral.

The bottom line is that it is a niche. Saying Ashley Madison could overtake Facebook is like saying the Warrior Forum could overtake Facebook. Neither of those things would happen outside of Facebook crashing and burning.

Nowhere in the same universe as Facebook. I'd bet a million bucks they don't have anywhere close to 8 million current members.

Just googled the site and there are sooo many complaints of people buying credits with nobody to communicate with. I'd bet 99% of members are men.

I'd also bet Craigslist does more "business" than Ashley Madison.

At some point, I imagine it will be overtaken. It's so far from perfect that I don't even bother using it for personal use.

Google has one in the works that may even be near it's introduction. If you look up the rumors for Google Circles, it sounds far more appealing to me.

I'm not saying it will surpass Facebook, but I think something will.

Don't see the big deal about people promoting Ashley Madison. If people want to have an affair they will with or without this website. How is promoting this service any sleazier than promoting an internet marketing course that will make you $5000 in a day without any work needed?

Not that anyone on here does that and this post isn't directed at anyone by the way.

With all of the men on the dating sites who complain about women who are just gold diggers, I find it ironic that "sugar daddy" sites are profitable. On the other hand, since it's merely a disguised sexual arrangement, maybe not. But given that general dating sites seem to be nothing more than hookup sites...

      Grrrr!

As a single woman, I've used a few different dating sites. And I was most emphatically NOT looking for an arrangement!

What flabbergasted me was meeting a man who loudly proclaimed he wasn't looking for/disliked "gold diggers" but was 40, lived on disability (and he had NO disability), worked for his (wealthy) mom under the table (and got substantial financial gifts for his birthday and holidays), had a motorcycle, a sports car, and ....was a wanna-be drummer.

(In truth, he didn't want to be held accountable for his own life and wanted others to continue providing for him. At 40!!!)

I, on the other hand, am a woman with some somewhat serious physical concerns who can legitimately collect financial assistance. But I was raised on a "if you don't work, you don't eat" philosophy and my parents have a healthy aversion to taking government handouts. So I take a LOT of pride in having my own job, my own car and my own money. (It's been hard won, believe me!)

As soon as I figured out what was going on with this guy, I lost complete respect for him and broke up with him shortly thereafter.

(Don't people have enough self-respect to fend for themselves (if they can) without taking handouts from others or expecting others to solve their problems??? Sheesh!)

Uh, Facebook is a social networking site and Ashley Madison is a a complete and total SCAM Online Dating Site much like Adult Friend Finder.

AM requires people to buy credits in order to contact "real women." There's all sorts of information on this scam out there. Just do a Google search.

I'd have more of a problem with the fact that Ashely Madison scams its customers than anything else if I was promoting them.

It is tiny in comparison with Facebook and will never have the widespread appeal that Facebook has. It is for people who are actively looking to cheat on their spouses, so it excludes a large portion of the population. You can't compare 8M to 500 or so M.

But just launch a blog and write articles and paste Ashley Madison ads on it and maybe do some adult dating site reviews on the blog. Nothing wrong with that if you want to be involved in that niche.

Suzanne: You probably know the deal... People buy IM products and get mad because they don't actually come with the actual ATM that spits out the $100 bills, so it must be a scam.

If I were looking for a woman on Ashley Madison and I was silly enough to order credits, I would either have to admit I was stupid or claim they are selling a scam.

I am not saying that I am stupid or that it is a scam, but I live out here in the sticks of Oklahoma, and most of the "real women" on Ashley Madison live in the major metropolitan cities across the country.

Iffin I want to catch up with a cheating woman here in Oklahoma, I need to go hang out at the laundry mat or the ******.

I can't speak for every single one of them, but I do know that most of the successful ones have the same kinds of tricks. For example, some of them allow you to be a member and have a profile, but if someone contacts you, you have to pay to communicate with them.

That's kind of how they continue to boast their "millions of members" gimicks. When you first take a look you'll see endless profiles, but it turns out most of those people aren't actually active and immediately accessible.

They have lots of sly ways of continuously sucking money from their members.

I'll tell you now they are an unbelievably successful business and as stated have been in profit from incredibly early on. The owner is an amazing marketer right here in Toronto and you can find Ashley Madison interviews with him through editorials they did on pretty much every big talk show/news station back a half dozen or so years ago (probably more since). Like Dr.Phil, CNN, tons of others so they understand media/marketing extremely well and flipped their idea/money fast.

I actually remember asking him "Can I ask you a personal question?" then I'm like "Naw I better not" but he insisted I ask him, I'm sure he gets a lot of them. .. "Are you married? And if so what does she think of all this?" His answer was direct, not emotional, or self serving "I am with someone, I am loyal, she views it pretty much the same way I do, and we are happy. It's a platform that exists and always will, and we provide a safe place for it to happen rather than it be through mischevious means, most people try to target single women/men on social sites pretending to be single when they are not - thus lying/creating another layer of.. . ." Anyway he justified it well, and frankly my whole view on the institution of 'marriage' or to be with one person for the rest of your life is a lil' skewed to most but I accepted his answer and though maybe not aligned perfectly with my own beliefs, thought this whole thing was ingenious.

Well, let's see Ashley Madison make it's first Billion Dollars.
They did attempt to run a commercial during the Super Bowl and buy naming rights to the New Meadowlands Stadium. They aren't exactly hurting for money.

Agree or disagree with what they are doing, some ideas are so simple yet so freaking smart.

A Social Media / Dating site for adulterers, $60 million in yearly revenue, $20 million in annual profits and still growing.

There really is a niche for everything and I think many of us have learned that some niches are a lot larger than we ever imagined.

For those who might be interested, I found this...

OK, I'm off to ponder dumb ideas that could be niches waiting to explode.

You mean like Pets.com? Or PSINet? (Ravens stadium in Baltimore) Yeah that's a definitive sign they're rolling in the dough.

I agree it was simple and smart. I don't completely trust the numbers since they're coming from the company--as a private company no one is verifying them.

The Business Week article Christopher's article link refers to is here Cheating, Incorporated - BusinessWeek

When you read the article, you see the CEO seems to be obsessed with Facebook--which is probably where the OP probably got the idea. Biderman harps on it a bit in that article and cites the 8 million members quote--although again, as I found on their site--that number includes all members since 2002.

The company does have its issues--being able to promote itself is one, after being prevented from doing so during the Super Bowl, on Google and on Facebook.

As with AFF, its members are overwhelmingly male. And they've had trouble securing additional financing because of the nature of the business.

I'm not dissing them--obviously they still have plenty of money to make. My point is they may not be quite the wunderkind some make them out to be.

Interesting though that they estimate 20% of their female members are single.

I don't think anyone seriously thinks that. But for what amounts to a relatively small subniche, it is certainly making waves and monetizing very well (unless we have a huge 'underground' segment of the population who are in favor of adultery that we aren't aware of )
