Facebook Likes - On Static Site vs FanPage.. Major Help Needed.

Hey guys

I am kind of new to the facebook likes thing.

For about 8 months I've had a "like" button on my STATIC html site. Not linked to any facebook page. I mainly put it there to add some social proof but maybe some future SEO benefit if Facebook sells this data to G.

I am wondering how this LIKE button differentiates from like buttons that link to Actual facebook "Fan" pages.

From what I understand, those that LIKE a fan page allow the owner of the fan page to write updates and posts to people, right?

I guess I am asking this: is a fan page necessary?

Also, I plan to change my static site to Wordpress soon and I would LOOVE to have that facebook social plugin on the site to show PICTURES Of those who have liked my site. Or is that only allowed when you have it linked to a fan page?

Does anyone have any input on this? It would be very much appreciated.

Oh, and this is what I mean by social plugin:

I want that -- I want to show people's pictures on my site.

Take a look at the following webpage: developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/facepile/ (you need to copy this and put it in your address bar, I don't have enough post count to post url). You need to know how to create a Facebook app first in order to use it on your site.

There should be some existing Wordpress plugin to easily have the Facepile on your blog, although I'm not using one myself so I cannot recommend a plugin doing just that.

The like button on your static is pretty much the same with the like button on the Facebook Page. Although having it on the Facebook Page automatically links it with the rest of the Facebook features, whereas doing it on your site, you need to configure to have it working properly.

Having said that, you can also post updates to people who had clicked the like button on your website. Though, not as straightforward as sending updates via Facebook Page.

The Facebook social plugin that shows the pictures of those who had liked your site - it's called Facepile, and yes, you can also use that without having a Facebook Page if you want to.

So Amry, are you saying that on a static site where I have had 325 "likes" that I can set up facepile and it will show their pictures on my page?

    Also, is this facepile?

Oilman, yes, you can set up Facepile on your static site, no problem at all. Facebook Page is not a requirement to do this. And yes, you can * theoretically* have the 325 likes with their pictures shown on your page (theoretically because Facebook said that, but I haven't really use the Facepile myself so I cannot say yes from my own experience).

And by the way, which faces that will appear on your page depends on the current visitor looking at it. As documented by Facebook, "The plugin only displays friends photos. If the user does not have friends who have liked your page or have connected to your site, no faces will be shown."

The one in the webpage you gave is not a Facepile. That's a Likebox (another social plugin by Facebook). For that you would require a Facebook Page, as the Likebox simply enables you to put a brief view of your Facebook Page on your site.

    Oh ok
So even though my static site dosen't yet have an APP ID, yet alreayd has likes, I just need to register it with an APP ID, then install a FacePile - via static code or just get a wordpress plugin, and then I past in my APP ID and then it will show the pictures?

When you register a Facebook App, there will be an entry where you can put in your site address. And in the static page / wordpress post itself, you are able to put in a fb:app_id meta tag where you can specify the FB App you are going to use, so I'm guessing that Facebook is using that to link their social plugins together.

It's usually quite easy if you use Wordpress, since there are probably existing plugins already doing those complicated things for you.

I am a little confused on the question, but if am understanding it right, you want to be able to show the faces of the people who have clicked the like button. If this is true, then I would create a like button here:

    Like Button - Facebook Developers

(the first or top one is what I'm talking about)

and make sure to check the box that says "Show Faces", that way it will show the faces, then simply create the iframe and paste it in the place where you want it.

I hope that answers your question

    Mark
