How important is it to build a list?

Been doing my thing for a while, and things are working out great.

But I recently started talking to a guy who lives off the money he's making online, and he told me that building a list was one of the best things he had ever done. What's your view on that, are lists really that important? Been doing affiliate marketing/AdSense for a while without building a single list.

I would like the answer to this question also. I have never build any lists. What about the emails you send out? Will they go directly in the junk/spam folder?

    Subscribing..

  • Yes, building a list is THAT important.

Think about it: You buy an adwords ad or pay somewhere else for traffic. Since your visitors will go to your site and might buy (or not), they will be lost forever as soon as they leave your site. That limits your competitiveness on Adwords or other paid traffic avenues. If you, instead, built a list from that traffic, you've built an asset and could send them to your landing pages over and over again.

If you build a good relationship with your readers and present them relevant and quality offers, the lifetime customer value will increase dramatically as compared to them visiting your site, clicking an adsense ad or buying an affiliate product. If you make more per customer, you can afford to bid more on adwords or other traffic sources and ultimately dominate a niche. Your profit margin increases dramatically if you have a list and get the customer relationship management right.

Let me give you some figures from my own experience. Less than 7% of my sales come from the first email. Over 84% of sales are made between the second and 12th message. Sales begin diminishing from that point on, but often sales are still being made even after the 90th. (Emails are sent every day.) Your mileage may vary, but the upshot here is that you are certainly leaving a lot of money on the table by not building a list.

I can't imagine doing things without building a list.

Think about it...If you have an excellent sales letter you may be converting 2 out of every 100 people to customers. Where do the other 98 visitors go? AWAY forever!

If you instead send people to a squeeze page and capture just 25% of their contact info (some squeeze pages do much better) you will have the opportunity to reach 23 more people per 100 visitors.

Plus those 2% will probably buy right away anyway (on your first followup) and may buy many more products as time goes by. Plus you'll have 25 people you can send followups to, allowing you to reach the more passive/cautious customers.

In an interview I did with Mark Hendricks recently he said that he has increased his sales by up to 9 times just by following up with 3 emails. That's huge.

Then they'll be on your list and you can try marketing different products if they just didn't like the first, it's just so much more leveragable!

I started with no list, but made sure to add one to my PLR store. Things are slow to grow (as I have not done a freebie, just give the option to ask for new topics.)

Today I just received a very powerful testimonial as a response from an email I "blasted" to my list of 11 subscribers. The same response got me a sale from the sender. Not having a list would have had me needing to do a PLR WSO to promote my newest packs instead of just telling my list.

This is a testimonial (and a sale) that would have not likely happened without the email. It will make my next WSO sell that much better.

This one act tells me that having the list, albeit a small one, was the best idea ever.

That's awesome Doug! And yes an email list is really that important. It doesn't matter how big your list is as long as it's super targeted. Your PLR example is an excellent example of a targeted list.

Conservatively, our lists bring us an additional 80% to 400% in back end profits. I think people are absolutely insane by not building a list. If they knew how much money they were leaving on the table they would start building the right foundation to creating list(s).

  • I dont know why, but I put off building a list for 7 months. It's definately possible to make decent money without building a list, but as others have said, you're leaving a lot of money on the table

Great responses from everyone, as the saying goes - 'the money is in the list'. Though remember, what you do with the list is what really matters. So the money is really in the value you give to your list. Give your list great content, and build a good relationship with people on your list, and you'll be able to cultivate a quality, responsive list.

Unlike a lot of stuff you'll hear in IM, building and maintaining a list really, really IS that important to your success. Absolutely no doubt about it. Everyone has to start somewhere, so don't let the process intimidate you. And when you finally have built up your list, treat those listmembers like the gold they are...really concentrate on building relationships with them, and not just throwing products at them all the time. I PROMISE you, it will be so well worth it!

List is NOT the most important thing !
If you're good in FaceBook PPc why you would need a list ? (if u arleady have all the people on your knees... )

And how you can see here are some warriors that are making a living only from WSO's ...
So, thing about it : why you need a list on "making money" niche if you arleady have all those people here on WF ... just a thought...

Here is why you need the list in the MMO niche, even with all the people in WF.

Lets say you are starting out with no proof or reputation to back you up.

Lets say that you bite the bullet and create a product to give away for a simple email sign up and post it as a WSO. This gives you a couple hundred people on your list. Freebie seekers maybe, but they can help supercharge the next step.

Ask the people on your list for feedback on the product and how it can be improved.

You take any response and remarks about your free product and use them to create a better product. Use any positive testimonials to help with some of the proof elements on the sales page and get it listed as a WSO.

Once it goes live, blast a message to your list talking about your new product and its special price. Even with a modest response you will get some views from your list, and some sales.

WSOs tend to draw attention a few ways

1 - Poster of the WSO has a solid reputation - you do not.
2 - The WSO has a solid title - yours may or may not
3 - The WSO has an increased amount of views or posts - yours now does

It is all about building and fueling the machine.

yes, you are missing out on so much! A list to an online marketer is their career online, without a list (to me) an online marketer is not a marketer at all!

You can do sooo much with a list I cannot stress how important it is. Things such as recurring sales from promoting products, sending out emails and building a relationship with your followers, selling one off products and ventures...

Some of the top marketers have said that if they started from scratch again and were to do it all over, they'd simply make their money again with their list.

So as quickly as you can, I'd recommend you create a list building account
