Well, if you DID use an excessive amount of resources, they had an OBLIGATION to shut you down. One could even argue that you GOT your three years.

Of course, that is only if you ARE guilty.

You Get What You Pay For

If you're going to go with the cheapest hosting you can find (which is probably a reseller account on hostgator) you're going to notice a difference.

Is this a business or a hobby? Invest appropriately.

I get that when you don't have a lot of money you have to make certain choices but cheap and free should not be a part of anybodies business plan.

Many hosts claim they offer "unlimited" space/bandwidth. Back in the early days (late 90s) Hostgator did not offer "unlimited" and used to have a page explaining that there is no such thing as unlimited. They finally caved in to market pressure and offer what everyone else does. Unlimited.

Fact is, there IS NO UNLIMITED. Servers have space limitations and bandwidth has to be paid for. Hosting companies started offering "unlimited" space/bandwidth on the premise that 90% of hosting clients won't use all their space. Instead, they include file quotas or DB quotas in the fine print, which no one reads.

Today, so many people are using Wordpress without knowing enough about how it works that hosting companies are having to shut people down for using too much server resources or too many DB queries.

I have heard of people running WP with 30-50 plugins -- without realizing that many of them are not necessary and use additional server resources, DB queries, etc. And the ones they should run, like caching, etc - they don't run because they don't know they should. But they don't know any of that, because it's all drag and drop, click and play stuff now and technical knowledge isn't necessary anymore.

A basic understanding of the tech aspects of WP and plugins would help a lot of people prevent getting shut down when their sites start seeing traffic.

Last spring, one of my clients was on Oprah. I got an email from the producer at Harpo productions a week in advance telling me what kind of volume to prepare for. Man -- that was a CRASH course in file optimization and caching, but we kept the site up and didn't crash the server. lol.

I think this kind of thing will happen more often as more people use WP without knowing how to minimize processes and server resource usage.

Not true. HostGator doesn't suspend you. They put the offending site on hold if it's using more resources than allowed and immediately contact you. I've had it happen with a reseller account. After a few minutes on the phone with an HG tech, they set me up with a dedicated server and all was good to go again.

That is because you are a good looking guy Kevin ;-)))

does it matter if they take the site down or suspend your account - the site is offline that is what matters -

since I am not so good looking my site was down for 3 days (thats how long it took them to move the site to a vps) and I spent the whole night sorting things out with a tech and spoke to at least a dozen supervisors etc...

I even exchanged Pms with the owner Brent (over at webhostingtalk no joke) at the end I lost my ranking which took me ages to achieve...

Like I said it takes one incident and you will change your outlook on hosting...

I agree, and I'm surprised you left HostGator cause they are one of the best. When it comes to webhosting you definitely look for great support. So far there's only two services I've stuck with, HostGator and HostZillion (part of the LiquidNet Ltd network)... they both have the best support I've ever encountered, not only are they quick to respond but they usually fix the problem for you (or at least alert you to a problem beforehand).

Going with cheap or free hosting usually ends up costing you more in the long run.

I'm workign on a client's site right now that's hosted there and it's the most sluggish site I've worked on for a while... I can almost feel the weight of it as it grinds along trying to load a WordPress page...

Nothing beats owning your very own server. If you're pulling that many db queries, you either have very bad code or have lots of concurrent visitors which means lots of traffic hitting your sites at once. I have my own server and wouldn't have it any other way. I also have a hostgator account for test sites.

this is why you dont do serious business on shared hosting. Throw a bunch of wordpress sites on there, get *some* traffic...and you WILL run into trouble, sooner or later.

It's still the best way to start.

But if you are having 2000-3000 visitors a day and your site is converting really good, then I think it is time to upgrade.

There is no such thing as unlimited. Otherwise web host companies will not bother suspending people's account for excessive use of bandwidth. Its kind of saying it's Free "but" only after you pay a 1 time fee. LOL.

Like someone said you got what you paid for. Why did you have to leave hostgator and choose to settle for uncertainty due to price.

Anyways, you can always go back to Hostgator or look for some other reliable host. I personally use Hawkhost and i'm fine with them.

So, lets make this a helpful thread!

Curious how many database queries your wordpress site is making?

Throw the following code in your footer. I put it above <?php wp_footer(); ?>

<p><?php echo get_num_queries(); ?> queries in <?php timer_stop(1,3); ?> seconds</p>

Now, reload your page and at the very bottom you'll see something like 49 queries in 1.001 seconds. Now you know how many database queries your site is making and how long it takes.

The fewer queries made, the better.

You're welcome! And thank you, too. Good question. I learned it all the hard way. lol. Bit by bit. First I had one of my blogs hit the main page of DIGG and got bombed with traffic. Burned through several gigs in the first day and learned from that one. Then problogger promoted one of my videos -- then the Oprah thing. I learned a bit each time.

Christopher's suggestion is excellent for starters. Knowing how many processes your WP makes per page load is a good start.

Reducing plugins to essential ones is another good start, because almost every plugin adds processes. Using caching for images and pages is also a BIG help.

Awesome, awesome Christopher Jon!! People also need to remember to multiply that number by their visitors. Like, if they use 50 processes to load each page and they have 1000 visitors/week, that's 50,000 processes per week. If they're running any cron - that's additional.

Plus, if they are using domain mail, that's also bandwidth. Not DB processes, granted, but all server use -- whether page loads, DB processes, CRON processes, etc -- they all fall under use of server resources.

Not true. You don't do "uneducated" business on shared hosting. One of the sites I manage does a million a year in sales, burns through GIGs of bandwidth per month, runs html and wordpress -- and it's on shared hosting.

It's not about being professional, it's about knowing the technical details to make everything run efficiently.

In most things, you can spend money or time. Your choice. If you don't want to spend the time to learn the technical end, you can spend the money on some one to do it for you or a dedicated server. If you spend the time learning the technical end, you don't have to spend the money on a dedicated server.

Also, dedicated servers aren't magical sources of unlimited bandwidth and resources, either. The more server resources you need, the more you pay. So even with a dedicated server, it still helps to know how to conserve server resources. Use server resources for visitors, not unnecessary plugins and processes.

That's not true, either. If you use basic wordpress, but know nothing about what you're doing with it, you can still get banned. For example - lots of people upload images direct from their camera - 5000 pixels wide and don't know why they shouldn't. They don't turn on hotlink protection so those images get used freely on forums and blogs and after a while, they've used too much space and too much bandwidth and get a reprimand from their host.

Other people use "basic" wordpress and add 57 plugins that are resource hogs and then all it takes is to get one big whack of traffic and they're having problems, too.

I know lots of people that run basic wordpress, and innocently upload their videos or MP3s to their hosting account and run into trouble, too.

Getting banned usually has nothing to do with using basic wordpress. It has to do with all the other things they do and don't know why they shouldn't.

/rant -- yet again. Double gah!

For more server resources you might want to look at VPS hosting plans. You'll find some deals here.
And as you've discovered, it's often not a good idea to pay for 3 years of hosting in advance.

You could also test with monYog:
MySQL GUI Tools. MySQL Monitor and Manager

it will detect if you had long response query, how many queries you made per hours, etc.

also cpu resources are counted:
- If you use autoblogging plugin (like wp-robot), try to make less aggressive
- If you use PHP Framework use the less cpu resource one (like Code Igniter 2.0)... don't use zend framework on shared server, its too powerfull and it will use lots of CPU resources
if you use only basic wordpress and still get banned, then something wrong with your hosting provider... Run from it !

Ebay is not a good source to find reliable hosting. I bought 2 plans from different sellers off there and both disappeared within the first year leaving me with no sites online.

I would go back to Hostgator and get a VPS, they will move your sites for you. But figure out why you are using too many resources first if you can.

Well I bought a package there for a site (non descript) and its still working...

Hostgator is so slow it will take your blog ages to open and yet a lot of people still recommend hostgator...all it takes is one problem and it will change your outlook on hosting forever!

Yes, a VPS hosting plan at a place like HostGator is the proper thing to do. Going for $1 or $1.95 per month is your problem, not your solution.

Do me a favor and ignore the posts about the bandwidth and space, and focus on the use of server resources. That is what causes problems and concerns a hosting company. It's crucial to the operational health of a server, especially on shared hosting.

Excessive use of shared server resources is what will cause a server to slow or shut down

First thing I would do is look at what you are running that is causing. See if there is something that is not throttling like it should (is possible) or if you are getting the amount of concurrent (same time) hits to the site that it sounds like.

I would personally recommend Bluehost... the price is very reasonable and comes with everything that you could possibly need! Their support has always been very helpful as and when I have needed it.

Going to look for vps host.

Having left there, hostgator, I'll never go back.

Reasons:

- I had a dedicate plan, eventhough it was "Unlimited", having some sites, the green bar at the cpanel started to go yellow before it turned red. So, "unlimited is very limited".

- Before I left, after a lot of call, emails, wait, wait and wait, their attitude was, leave. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't even go back even if they offer FREE PLAN FOR LIFE. Never regret leaving. They don't know how to keep customers.

I've had hosting with Hostgator for over 3 years and the
only problem I ever had was through my own ignorance.

I loaded a photostore script on the $9.95 a month "Baby Croc"
plan, and my wife uploaded somethng like 15,000 pictures to
the store.

That's when we found out about resources and server load.

We had a choice - get rid of a bunch of pictures, or get a
dedicated server.

On the other hand, at one time I had 22 domains on the
$14.95 a month "Swamp Croc" plan with several WP blogs
and graphics heavy sales pages on practically every one
not to mention tracking scripts, help desk script, several RAP
sites, a couple of Butterfly Marketing sites...just to name a few.

I never had a complaint from HG and my WP blogs loaded just fine.

My personal experience with HG has been great - I don't see where
you could expect better service for twice the money.

The only hosting I've used that's actually better when you talk about
customer service and tech support is Host4Profit. David Grimes knows
his $hit and runs one heck of a hosting company.

Of course, it's considerably more expensive than HG. You get about a
GB of storage for $25 a month, but it's worth it in some cases; say,
for instance, you want to run your own email script. Don't try this with
Hostgator.

I'm only talking about the UNLIMITED while it was really very LIMITED and well, read my previous post.

Personally, when a company has an attitude of: "If you're not happy, just leave". That ticks me.

  I don't make recommendations on any particular kind of hosting for one reason...every business is different.
  
  Some people run their own autoresponders....others stream video and audio....others have detailed databases....and some just slam traffic.
  
  Each needs a different kind of hosting arrangement. The first one requires a host that allows for bulk email, the second one requires tons of bandwidth and disk space, the third requires tons of database space, and the forth needs a sturdy server that can handle massive amounts of visitors.
  
  No one hosting company meets all those requirements...it would be too cost prohibitive to offer such a package.
  
  So each person who looks for hosting need to do extensive homework...and figure out what they really need, and buy accordingly. That means you not only figure out what the host provides, but you read their tos dilligently so you know what they will and won't allow.
  
  And also, realize as your business grows and changes, so will your needs...so you will almost never stay with the same hosting arrangement forever. For example, when [H]ard|OCP was launched, Kyle Bennett originally used personal web space provided by his ISP. Today, his hosting consists of an array of co-located servers that are deep in the heart of Texas.
  
  Was the ISP web space a scam because they shut him down long ago? No, he just outgrew it, and would do so several times in the course of 13+ years on the internet. Same as what is happening to the OP right about now.
  
  The only thing I wish is companies like that would get real, and explain that to their customers instead of getting mad at them, or putting out semi deceptive ads that make people think they are the only hosting they will ever need. It just ain't so....and now you know.

I use bluehost and there;s a coupon on this site which will make you feel better as its the maximum discount you can get. Stick with the top 3 and you'll be o.k

See, that is why I would stick to hostgator. I had warnings about that before and I immediately contacted hostgator staff and they helped me resolve the issue. No lost data, nothing like that.

Blue host have been moving there servers around so maybe that's the problem
