Wanting to do a Press Release

I have been wanting to do a press release but not sure where to start. Can you only do them for new sites? I have done a lot of article marketing but never really got into press releases. Can I do too many? Can I write about products related to my website? I'm not an IM newbie but not really sure where to start with these. Any advice would help, thanks

You don't have to be a new site to do a press release, anyone can do them.

Depends on what your purpose is. If you're really trying to get press attention, yeah, I would be choosier. If you're just trying to get links back to your site I don't see how you could do too many.

You can if you're just trying to get links back to your site. If you're looking for real press attention, that isn't going to cut it because it's not newsworthy.

If you're looking for visitors to see the press releases and come to your site, it might work if you talk about the problem your product solves.

Press releases are different from articles in that you want to tell them up front all the important details--the who, what, where, when, why and how. Then, in your next paragraphs you can lay things out more.

Typically, you go from the most to the least important information in a press release so if someone does decide to run it and need to cut it down, they can just start cutting from the bottom.

Press releases generally have a quote from someone in them, for example, you talking about why you created this product.

They're also written in the third person--"Consumers can..." instead of "You can..."

It's best to keep them to one page.

I'm assuming you're going to use press release sites rather than sending it on your own to the press, so no point in going over formatting if that's the case.

But you should also post it on your own website as well as distribute it.

    Hope that helps.

I highly recommend using a press release distribution service such as prwire to get good results.

You may want to get your first press release professionally written. Sure it will cost a little money, but then you'll see what you need to do. Press Releases are different than regular articles and you have to tackle the news angle on them.
