Getting Around Amazon Dropping Your State?

Hi,

I just moved back from California to Georgia for a few months. Right now Georgia is safe with the amazon affiliate program but California might not be. I think within 3 months I could really build a nice income with Amazon. But let's say I build 5 sites and in 90 days my income is at $6000 per month. Now I moved back to California what do I do? I mean I made the sites that make the income in Georgia but then I move to Cali.

Do I just let amazon keep my current address in the system and let them send the checks to my house (my parents live here too.) Im just wondering if once I move back to Cali my amazon commissions will stop or not? Is there any way around this? Thanks

I think they dropped IL, Tx and a few others. I think Oregon is good though.

There are some states that have no sales tax. Eventually, they will be the go-to states for Incorporating your business and obtaining a business address.

Yea this is very true. I guess if you have built a serious business online and want to continue it, you will need to move to another state. I've also read that you can get around it by having your check sent to another state? Not 100% sure about that though. Really annoying though if you ask me. Glad I'm not effected by this....yet.

The best way I've found is to incorporate in notoriously business and tax-friendly states. Nevada, Delaware, and Wyoming are at the top of those lists. Look into obtaining an LLC, a business license, and a registered agent and office(both of which can be rented for cheap monthly fees) in one of these states. have your mail forwarded. There are cheap(and 100% legal) ways to get around Amazon's latest shenanigans.

Look at my location and ask me how I know.

Cheap and legal???? Hmmmm. Someone in CA has to spend at least 183 days in NV, have a home at least rented there, your car licensed there and a NV driver's license. Otherwise, this doesn't work. CA requires their residents to register their NV Corp as a "foreign corp" and when you do that you lose all the NV benefits.

No, I'm not a lawyer, but I've been there, done that, so check for yourself. CA is busting NV Corps owned by CA residents every day. The people selling NV corps to Californians say otherwise, but I'd say CA attorneys know better. It's not as easy as it seems.

I live in CA, too, I heard our local assemblyman on the radio a few days ago and yes, they are talking about it in Sacramento like most other cash strapped states. I think the chances of it happening this year or early next year are very likely, especially if the politicians don't get the tax increase approved in the November elections.

I've stopped adding Amazon to my site and Hubs (although still using it through Squidoo, but that's another story). I'm moving toward using other affiliates that have brick and mortar stories in the state (and already charging sales tax). Not so good commissions, I know, but the affiliate sales have always been just an extra for me.

            Good luck to you.

Short answer....have commission checks sent to your parents address.

The best answer is don't move back to California.

Sending to an address out of state could set you up for real trouble, i.e. tax evasion and getting sued by Amazon for lying about your residency.

When Amazon issues your 1099 at the end of the year, it will be processed by you as a restricted California-resident.

California will then go to Amazon wanting their sales tax. Then Amazon is coming after you for fraud.

Either don't move back, or keep dual-residency by using your newfound revenue to keep a home in Georgia also. Then file your taxes from your Georgia residence.
