I am a college student. Most of my friends are broke. They blow whatever little money they have on partying. The only serious money they spend is on buying college books.

Maybe look for something like private loans for college students. Before I had to leave school I had some friends who would blow all of their student loans from the government and would either have to start working or eat Ramen for days on end.

I agree, my sister is a college student and I know she and her friends don't spend a cent online (except maybe buying flights etc if they're travelling). All their money goes on accomodation, food and nights out. The only credit cards they have are prepaid (and again, those are only for booking things like concert tickets/flights etc).

For the most part they're entirely relying on their parents for what little spending money they have. I know because my sister isn't working and making her own money (she doesn't have time even for a part time job), she would feel bad spending on extra stuff online that she doesn't need.

I know a guy who did quite well with the CPA free trials (weight loss, teeth whitening etc.) putting up flyers around university campuses. Those free trials are pretty much gone now though.

erhh...I go a to 4 years university... I got a GPA over 3.0 and have no clue what you mean by study notes. I can't speak for every college student but it's not something that has came up in my circle of friends. Never even heard a professor mentioning it. So, no, we don't spend money on that IMO.

Your best strategy would be to build a list and promote your affiliate links of websites selling cheap college books or books rental. You will make crazy sales around the end of January (2nd semester starts) and the beginning of september (1st semester starts). Just put emphasis around the words "discount" and "save money."

Recent grad here:

Anything to do with parties will do well! I've heard of people who target spring break offers: flights, rentals, etc. I also used to provide leads for an Aussie finance company targeting int'l students who want loans eg for buying a car, but that's a very specific niche.

Also, I think a lot of students are looking for part-time income. So teach them things like how to make money promoting CPA offers to students. Or target the girls with freebies (free makeup) and discounts. Actually, all students will love freebies, that's why CPA offers like free iPad/laptop/phone/anything will do really well.

I hate to say it, but there is always money for going out. Coupons for pubs, movie theatres, textbooks, anything entertainment. They also like their posters and pictures plastering their walls. Gaming is huge. I worked in a dorm years ago, and every kid had a video game system. Now they all have ipods, blackberry's and iphones. Cut me in if you use any of these ideas.

About Study notes. What I see now, is the Profs make everything available online. Miss class, download the powerpoint presentation. Or, download the recording of the lecture in a podcast. It is literally disgusting how everything is available at the students finger tips. If I were a student today, I wouldn't see daylight for months as there appears to be no incentive to go to class except to write tests.

Been there and tried multiple college targeted sites. We've been on this along with a number of other niches, including selling our services to celebrities for 3 years with over 400+ sites. As other posters have mentioned, the college market is pretty tapped out. One area where we feel could be successful, though, is turning the college students into affiliates for your sales. Think about the potential. We've hired 9 interns who all have their own affiliate codes. Let them sell for you.

I run a website that targets teenagers and college students. 35,000 unique visitors a month makes me about $15 a month in Adsense. They don't buy . . . anything. As others have mentioned, I'm pretty sure all of that hard earned cash goes on booze, drugs, and the occasional video game.

one of my smaller niches does...but you gotta be careful they dont have any money.

You remembe what it was like making ends meet and living off packs of noodles.

I just say this niche might be ok, but tread carefully.

It's a huge multi-billion-dollar market, overall, but very tough to find a profitable niche because almost all the cash is being sucked paying tuition, room and board, and textbooks. What little that's left is almost always earmarked for partying.

(With gasoline prices going through the roof, even getting home for the holidays has become much more expensive than it was 5-10 years ago.)

I haven't looked into it but there might be something more profitable in the post-graduation market. That's when all the money dries up and the RealWorld(tm) hits them like a speeding freight train - especially in today's economy with pretty dismal prospects for the entry-level jobs they were so looking forward to just a few years ago.

Or maybe there are more profitable niches with the parents instead of the students. It's worth checking.

So,

We've more or less established that college students are broke. So the follow up question is...

How you can take advantage of and monetize college student traffic that doesn't require them to spend money or buy anything?

You can apply the same question to pretty much anybody under the age of 21 who don't have a stable income.

CPA offers are a start and if you can generate enough traffic adsense and CPM ads are options.

What else?

Forget the scholastic side of the question. Concentrate on their age, gender ... other demographics. Look at and drive towards their needs not wants. I do not care how broke someone is they will ALWAYS have to meet certain needs.

In college that need was beer and girls. Mom, Dad and torrents take care of everything else.

College students do buy stuff but it's specific items. A laptop, an ipod etc... they aren't buying any 'ol thing online on a whim. That is the problem with the college crowd.

one of my favorite marketing models is the CPA to Offline hybrid models.

Basically, I will pay people to canvas a campus with thousands of fliers. I get about a 1% conversion rate on the CPA offers which net between 10-30 bucks. There are a number of universities around my previous city so it made it very easy to make a good chunk of change over the course of a few days.

And, college students, will work for cheap and have fun doing in. Pay a couple of frat guys $50 they'll be more then happy, and you'll be leveraging their perceived "coolness"

I target college students every day. You guys seem to have forgotten that colleges aren't home for just 19-24 years old party animals.

Here's some food for thought...

Think "higher education" - especially today now that online education is booming. Perhaps go for a little bit older crowd who have jobs already, but are seeking a higher degree to move up the ladder.

Students in private colleges/universities have money to burn. Advertise in campus newsletters, or even far more lucrative, write relevant articles with a call to action to your sales funnel.

Also, target professors and dept heads. They always have a discretionary budget that does not require approval. Contact info can be found on the websites.

There are a lot of banks that target college students for credit cards. Also anything in the dating niche, which is funny because they are all right there and just need to walk to class to see more girls than they could possibly know what to do with. Free trials like has been said are good. Most are broke and if you can offer something that will make them a couple of bucks that is what I would go with.

lol.... alot of students habits are pretty simple....

1. Sleep till late
2. go to lectures if they feel up to it
3. party all night on cheap booze
4. head to local college bar for cheap beers and sometimes FREE Beer.
5. party like crazy !!!!
6. check their bank account and it's in the minus figure...
7. back to partying for FREE and cheap booze

The best times to be marketing to students is right at the beginning of the school year or semester. They will buy techie gadgets and related accessories.

Right now is an excellent time to be targeting professors and dept heads in engineering, science, medical, and industrial arts for related expendable equipment and supplies. They generally have discretionary budgets which need to be spent by the end of the fiscal year (most often ending June 30) or they lose it.

For all of the reasons stated here, college students are a very hard market. They have no money, and what money they do have they spend on items that are already marketted to death (alcohol for one).

If you were trying to get free opt-ins or push CPA offers I would try paying people on Fiver to put up flyers around different campuses.
