Hard work and skills won't make you rich?

Doesn't it seem, more often than not, that your skills are not always the key to making big money? It doesn't matter how good you are, but if you don't know people in higher position, you won't get there. It's almost always who you know and who you...sweeten up.

Skills are great to have, but first you need big contacts if you want to earn big money. That is unless you win a lottery.

Do you agree?

Well networking is a skill too... and that'll get in you in with the right type of contacts.

Some people are lucky to know the right people, but if you don't you can always figure out ways to.

I believe that hard work, skills, persistence, and the right mindset can make you big money on its own...but more often than not, the people who make the most money are the ones who network and make JV deals.

You CAN make a ton of money on your own but networking might allow you to get to the top quicker. It's only one piece of the puzzle though and something you should do once you develop your skills.

There are different ways to get rich financially.

Win the lottery? A rare chance for sure. Can call this a lot of luck.

A Golden Idea? Certainly you need the skill of being able to see something where others see nothing. Or need more creativity than your average bear. Or get tired of dealing with a problem that just happens to affect a lot of other people so you create a solution to it. But then you also need the ability to market it better than the people who inevitably copycat the idea.

Building a business? Many skills may come into play and opportunities need to be available or perhaps created. Hard work and smart work can certainly be a great asset.

Investing? Skills may play a part in it. Hard work maybe. Certainly ideas, research and testing involved. But once you find a way to spend $10 combined with a tiny amount of time and turn it into $12 in a way that is duplicatible and scalable then you can build wealth quickly. Alternately, if you can find a way to spend $10 combined with 10 times as much time and turn it into $30 in a way that is duplicatible and scalable then you can build wealth quickly.

Different approaches. Different mindsets. Some definitely require more work. Some require more creativity. Different skills. Luck. The question is really which one is right for each one of us. The best path for you may not be the best path for me.

Yep skills aint enough. There are a lot of athletes out there that play 10 times better than some of these pros but no one will ever see them play in the big league.

Someone once told me luck is when preparation meets opportunity and you can't have one without the other.

Many factors play into success (I guess success in this case meaning being wealthy/rich). Its not enough for you to have the know how, but you gotta be able to postion yourself so others know it. Once you master that, then success will seem to come with ease.

I believe that if you work hard (and smart) and also have good skills, those 'people in higher position' will probably start noticing you. Of course you have to expose yourself as much as you can, as well.

To borrow a philosophers logic... skills are necessary, but not sufficient... for success.

in the world of business "luck" is that little fleeting moment that passes in front of you.. where one single action has the capacity to turn the tide of your good-fortune!

or it can be more general as in being in the right place at the right time!

In the NY best-selling book "Outliers", Malcolm Gladwell explicitly speaks to the "Myths of success"

    Just my thoughts...

"It's not WHAT you know, but WHO you know."

This counts for more than you think and in industries across the world. Those with the best skills don't necessarily get the gig. Perception is reality. Why do you think there are so many people who preach "fake it till you make it?"

I'm not saying thats the best course of action, but again, my perception is your reality. If I perceive you to offer something of value then your reality is that your going to make some money (relating to the subject of this forum).

Alignment with your dream is the only thing required for your dreams to manifest. I've always had the fortune of running into 'the right people' and I only recognized it after the fact lol Life's funny.

Every deliberate creator knows that once you are aligned with your dream someone or something gotta fill that hole (that actually no longer exists because you live your dream before your dream manifests) because the universe is built to create an equilibrium.

That's why I preach: "action doesn't create"...it doesn't matter how hard you work - if your perception is on lack you'll only get more of it even though you work harder.

What happens very often is that someone works very hard which gives them confidence ("now I'm worth something") which in turn then creates that success that people look at and admire. But reality creation works this way: you feel confident, which attracts the success you are looking for & you learn the skills as you go. There are lots of singers who didn't have a clue how to sing and made lots of money just because "someone asked me if I wanted to sing"....guess what: If someone didn't have the confidence they wouldn't even have tried.

I think it very much depends on the business you're in.
I was in the TV business and there (and in movies) it's ALL about who you know. I've seen so many absolutely lousy workers get way ahead just because of who they know or who they bl--.

And I think in MOST businesses where there is a structure of subordinates and superiors, then yes, you have to suck up to the right people to get ahead and you have to make friends and "fit in" with the people you work with - especially those above you and also those who are equal to you but who are "in the right clique".

However, I think with internet marketing and with your own business, then this becomes much less important. With an internet business it seems to me you can get ahead just by learning how to market well and learning to find the right thing or service to sell.

I've always liked what Calvin Coolidge had to say about this, with a little embellishment from me.

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men "and women" with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. The slogan press on has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave."

I love this quote Brian! I agree that nothing takes the place of persistence. Do you know that the more YOU grow as an entrepreneur the more people will want to know YOU? If this is the case then it's not who you know that will make you rich, but it's who you become.

        Just my two cents worth!

          Hi Coach,

Thanks, I think your two cents is much more valuable.

I really like your take on this also, I may have to use it myself.

I don't agree with the title of the thread. To me hard work is everything. This is the only asset that can help a man to get the highest pinnacle of success. However this is my personal feeling because I also saw the positive result of hard work.

Hard work and skills won't make you rich. <-- Agree with this

You need to work SMART. A very skilful farmer who work hard will and knows every thing about his crop will not make him rich if he works on the same thing. If he is SMART then he expand, maybe buy more field and hire more people.

I really think it depends on the industry. Sure, it's easier to get ahead if you bump into the right people that are willing to take you under their wing and elevate you . . . but I always prefer a good underdog story.

I disagree, respectfully....skills are what make you get paid....right now...most people look to jobs to get money...but if they had skills...

it wouldn't matter whether or not they had a job or not because people would have to pay them for it....

    Make sense?

Networking to get ahead FASTER is a skill by itself.

Networking is understanding people by helping them get what THEY
want and giving them the opportunity to help you get what you want.

However, you do NOT need to network to become successful. All you
need is the tool between your ears.

It's "tougher" to go at something on your own, especially when there
are people out there who have been or are at where you want to be.

You can save a LOT of time & money getting information or systems
that are efficient and effective instead of doing it yourself.

    ...

skills, for me, is what put me in front of the RIGHT contacts. Not look-
ing for someone to give me something I didn't take the time to learn
    how to do myself...

contacts are there to help you "connect" the dots -- not create them.

    That's YOUR job.
