Who do you register your domains with?

Was looking for domain registrars and found this:
10 things you MUST know before you register a domain name with anyone

They are recommending their own service, which....ok, but they make good points. Is it true that your domain registar owns the site name if you do privacy/whoismasking? Anyone have recommendations that aren't godaddy or these guys (unless you use them and can vouch for quality)?

Also looking for hosting recomendations but I realize all this may have been covered before. I didn't want to piggyback the namecheap/godaddy threads and apparently I use 'search' differently than everyone else but I did use it before starting this thread.

I've been hearing a lot of good things about iPage recently for hosting. I haven't used them for any new sites yet, but a lot of people are loving them. Plus they give you a free domain name when you sign up.

The article is interesting and I would like to know if what they say is true or not. I have no idea, but I must say it sounds like quite a bit of b.s. to get you to sign up with them. That's what my intuition tells me but again, I'd like to know the truth for sure so maybe someone will respond who knows.

I did want to say that I have never had any problems with godaddy and they always have coupons available where you can get the domains, renewals and hosting at good discounts. Their hosting cp kind of sucks but other than that I've had good service from them. As for registering, I am interested to see what others say about the above article. I do not use their privacy service so not sure how that factors in.

That's what I wonder as well. I shouldn't have said they make good points, they make points that sound good to a newb like me.

Anyone can create a site and give thier own opinion about others but the simple fact is that the real deals come from the big boys such as Godaddy, Dynadot, NameCheap, Moniker, DomainMonster, etc. as long as they're registered under ICANN they are good to go. Of course you'll find differences in each domain name company whether it be prices, hosting, support, etc, atleast they are legit and have the funds to back them up. No 3rd parties for me.

For hosting I use Godaddy, HostGator, IXHosting and even free hosting such as FreeHostia, which I've been using for smaller projects for years. It depends what you can afford for hosting.

GoDaddy is also reliable and cheap, but tries to sell you something you do not need every five seconds. That's the extent of those "hoops and fire rings" you're talking about: continual sales pitches, reminders about what's expiring, offers to buy inferior overpriced services, "default" settings that nobody ever wants.

I think it's terribly, terribly funny that internet marketers find this unacceptable.

In general, I don't find either service superior to the other.

I've registered 100s of domains in the last few years and have used both Namecheap and Godaddy.

Godaddy is by far the best imo but Namecheap offers free privacy protection...(which comes at a slight step down in customer service)

Me too, I am happily using both registrars, and I've learned to live with the pros and cons of each. Of course, I pick Namecheap when I have a need for the free privacy protection, and go with Godaddy when they have their crazy domain deals which happen fairly often.

I had terrible experiences with netfirms. They kept charging me for stuff I didn't order, my site kept going down. It was just awful.

For the OP, I use GoDaddy for domain hosting and dreamhost for my web hosting. So far, aside from all the upsell GoDaddy does, I have no real complaints about them. I just ignore it all and click through until I finish registering my domains. Dreamhost so far has been very good to me. Whatever they say they'll do, they do in spades. The tech support is very helpful and so far my site has not experienced any downtime.

I do however recommend that you host your domains with a separate company. It makes it easier to move if you ever need to do so.

The protection costs are one of the factors that annoy me about godaddy. But I should research it a bit more. Yes, also, I find the constant attempt at upsell a bit much and quite time-consuming. I've heard enough good about namecheap that I should at least check them out.

Netfirms for me all the way, I get free unlimited domain privacy, I could careless if they are the registered owner, I'm a privacy nut because my phone/e-mail can fall in the hands of not so ethical people, I know that all too well. If you were to get privacy from another provider, that's roughly $10 per year per domain. I used to have hosting with them but recently switched to another host who offered better services and customer care.

I also use GoDaddy for domain flipping purposes only, most people have a GoDaddy account and it's easy to transfer (push) after the 60 day no-transfer clause expires.

I also use Register.com for domains I believe are worth a lot of money. It makes it much easier to get prime listings in AfterNic & BuyDomain. Seems like the prices are about 3 times the cost of a regular domain name but a lot put importance on a domain that was purchased from Register.com. Rule of thumb is, less than 10 characters, competitive industry, no hyphens, no numbers on a dot com tld.

I started out with Godaddy years ago but switched to Namecheap.

The reason I switched was because I liked Namecheap's monthly coupon & free whois. Godaddy was getting some bad press at the time too (although I think that was mainly related to their hosting).

I've never had a problem with either though, so I'm sure they're both good in their own way.

You ask anyone who spends time on the internet, any real person and they will all say the same thing, it doesn't matter whether you have a large site or a small site...they all want to find the things they pay for when they want them :p

There have been countless times when I will go looking for something relatively simple like a domain ownership transfer and it will be hiding from me on Godaddy, I just cannot be bothered anymore.

I like Namecheap because it is not flashy, it is simple, clean and does exactly what I expect it to do, without all the useless upsells from Godaddy constantly. And don't even get me started on that ridiculous domain appraisal service that they scam people with...you might as well slam a sledgehammer into your pinkie toe and then try to throw a javelin throw the eye of a needle 300 yards away for all the accuracy that boasts.

I don't really spend much time navigating the interface.

They send me "your domains are expiring" and I go *click* and hit the payment button.

I want a new domain, I go check availability and then click "Next" about thirty times.

When I need to update WHOIS information, I fill out one form and click "apply to all domains." Done.

What all are you doing at your registrar? Because I just don't see any of those things being complicated.

Personally, I've never had an issue with name.com, and they are my preferred choice for all of my domain purchases. I prefer them over GoDaddy, because TBH I feel like GoDaddy has alienated customers too many times in the past. (For example charging $75 to move a domain, when they receive a spam complaint - unrelated to your site).

If you've never heard Mike Filsaime's horror story of dealing with Godaddy, you need to track it down. I'm pretty sure it's here in the forum somewhere.

I heard this directly from Mike at a seminar, so it's not exagerated.

Mike had his gmail account hacked. They accessed his Godday account and changed his password and email address for notifications from Godaddy, so he didn't hear from Godaddy until it was too late. Then the hacker transferred all his domains somewhere else.

According to Mike, Godday was useless at resolving the issue and totally unsympathetic to internet marketers.

It took him 8 days of back and forth before he had to threaten them with a viral campaign to his list not to use Godaddy.

On another occassion one of Mike's over-zealous affiliates spammed. Anyone knows, if you have affiliates, that's going to happen from time to time. Godaddy gives you 24 hrs to respond to a spam complaint, after which time they can legally take your domain and own it.

Mike missed the deadline. Now all of his sites are closed with a sign saying "Closed due to Spam and abuse."

He lost $35k in sales and $20k in refunds. His reputation took a beating.

He had a spam complaint on one of his Namecheap sites and it was dealt with immediately without any drama or loss of business.

Mike's stern warning to all marketers is to use Godaddy at your own peril.

Yikes! If all of that is true... that's a scary story!

I'll do some due diligence, but may very well switch to NameCheap.

      Thanks for the "heads up!"

I use 1and1.com for registrations ONLY but the their customer service for everything else (i.e. hosting and account upgrades) is deplorable. Uptime is fine, their service is just excruciatingly bad.
