Updating the "Published Date" On A Wordpress Blog Entry Current?

On my Wordpress blog, I decided to make the main page of my website display the 10 most recent posts, rather than being a static page, just to see what happens.

The publication date of each blog post is displayed.

I added 2 measly blog posts.... and then viola, I got 2 sales in less than 48 hours. (I know it's not enough data to prove or disprove that it was just a coincidence, but hey... I'll keep monitoring the situation. However, it does tell me that people like to see fresh content...) Prior to adding these blog posts, I hadn't updated the site in over 12 months.... And I would probably only get one sale every 3 weeks.

But anyway, that's not the main point of this post.....

My question is that I have several articles of mine I want to put up on my blog... But I have some "favorite" articles that I really would like to remain at the top of the page as the first blog post that people see.

So, what I did was added a couple of new articles... and then I went back and I manually edited the publication date of each blog post to make it look like my "favorite" one was published this morning, and all the others were published every 2 days, going backward into the past.

What are the implications of doing this from an SEO perspective? Well Google catch me on this date manipulation and say "Hey, this same blog post now has a different post date than what we had previously indexed! Let's sandbox you!"

Obviously any repeat visitors to my website might notice that the date keeps changing on my main blog post.

But to new visitors, they wouldn't know any better.

I guess I'm just biased toward a couple of blog posts that I really want people to see. But I want to build up my site as an authority site. (I have over 100 articles of my own from Ezinearticles I want to eventually post on my site as blog entries. Some are good articles and some are not so good.)

Or am I somehow undermining the whole point of blogging by doing this?

Any advice would be appreciated.

    None.

Almost all of my sites are in constant auto rotation. I have nifty plugin for it. It grabs a random old post and reposts it as new. The setting I use on most of my sites is one a week from articles older than 30 days. I have a few sites that have hundreds of articles and have more aggressive rotations ( 1 a day ), these sites also rank better than some of the others for more competitive keywords but there are other SEO factors at work in their favor as well.

Many of these sites are several years old and have survived multiple google updates without a missing a beat and are consistently make money. I don't touch them, I don't look at them and to be honest I couldn't even name them all if I tried. They are build and forget niche sites.

Throw 50 articles on a site and let it rotate until the end of time. Keeps the site fresh, keeps google bots active and from my experience works.

I'd like to know what that plugin is too.

You could also just use a sticky post plugin, I have one installed on a couple of blogs, seems to work well. Can't remember what it's called, I'll take a look some time and post here if your interested.
