How I Made $2,336.90 in One Day with One Article using Amazon Associates | Ridiculous.

Hey Guys,

Happy Fridays everyone, we can all start listening to Rebbecca Black. I haven't posted something that constructive in a while so I figured I'd talk about my last campaign that I did three days ago that produced exactly:

$2,336.90

So lets get at it:

First off, I generated about 115,000 uniques and I had around 4,370 clicks, so about a 3.8% CTR on my Amazon Ads, banners, and cookies.

From that conversion I received $2,336.90 at Amazon's top performance rate.

----------------------
Generating the Traffic
----------------------

The traffic was generated through:
  • Front Page of Digg
  • Stumbleupon
  • 20 Twitter accounts (distribution of 40,000 followers)
  • 2 emails (distribution of 6,000)
-----------------------------
The Money Making Content
-----------------------------

I produced a classic top ten list on my niche, mixing in personal touch and humor all to the mix. The article was entertaining and written for viral explosion.

I paid $100 for this ONE article.

Products and links were inside the article. Cookies were inside the images, so upon clicking they went to amazon.

The writer understood Digg which was my main focus. The article was setup for easy Diggs, ReTweets, and Stumbles.

- I dropped $100 into StumbleUpon Advertising

- I paid a guy $100 to submit my article into Digg, which included 100 Diggs. If those 100 diggs reached front page (which it did), I owed him another $100.

- I paid $5 a piece for the Twitter accounts via Fiverr. These didn't result in much traffic, but the traffic that came in, did ReTweet and Digg helping the entire system.

so total investment was $500.

Was i crazy... all for the promotion of just ONE article.

It acts just as like a product launch. I launched everything exactly at the same time. Because with Amazon I have a 24 hr window. I wanted as much as possible in regards to traffic as quickly as possible, creating as much viral potential that there can be.

Point being... article went semi viral, 115,000 uniques and $2,336.90 later I can say that this was a good investment.

==================================

Obviously nothing that you can do every single day, however, the whole point of this story is to show that A LOT of money can be made when you make the right investments.

This one was a bit more of a gamble and i understand no one is going to take these type of risks, but think a bit smaller.

I would highly recommend looking into some StumbleUpon advertising, now called Paid Discovery.

I would highly recommend you look at your content and think to yourself if it is actually good, and if it in fact could go viral. '

If you are using Digg for traffic, you want Top Ten lists, targeting the more tech savy reader (doesn't mean electronics), just means:

Top 10 ways a teenager can be cool when _____________
Top 10 scariest restaurants of all time
Top 5 most ridiculous _____ stories

----------------------------------------
The Biggest Viral Tip
-----------------------------------------

Keep your site simple. Or at least the page in which this traffic is going to land on. No pop ups, no exit scripts, you want them on the site, don't deter them from exploring otherwise they won't re-Digg or Tweet.

No Auto Play videos, no peel away ads, no Content gateways.

Let them actually read your $hit.

I hope this helps/inspires/makes someone happy.

Post with questions... I'm not going to give my Digg resource out, don't ask.

I've hit Digg homepage regularly with my blog and have a video on my blog from last year showing the traffic jump as proof of what hitting the Digg homepage can do, of course you need good articles but i'm pretty good with writing Digg worthy articles. Actually I am still receiving visitors today from articles that hit the front page over 6 months ago. Not to brag but I only pay $10 for my Digg submission but its only 50% chance of frontpage!

    Hey Rob,

For some reason as I hit the submit button I knew that this post might create an alliance amongst our normal back and forth arguments lol. I appreciate the comments and thanks.

I found my Digg guy through a word of mouth referral. He has an inner circle of "digg" friends and that is why what he does is so powerful.

My writer I found by contacting writers that have worked on viral sites before such as college humor.

My Twitter guys were all on Fiverr.

    StumbleUpon I handled myself.

The problem I've found with Digg that it isn't very "niche friendly". You have to approach it from a much broader perspective - no "get your ex back" stuff will make front page, which is where the traffic is.

Of course for sites that make most of their revenue through adsense or other ad platforms is great OR if you are in a "mass market" that is just huge. At least, that's what I've experienced as well as seen.

This seems to follow along the same logic, am I correct?

$.53 a click is completely reasonable. This is why so few people bother posting success stories or helpful stuff anymore, because at least half of the responses are going to be 'no, the math I did says you didn't do that'. Very helpful.

On top of it - digg wasn't the only place he got traffic.

I know for a fact that StumbleUpon can be HIGHLY targeted if done properly.(which I figure he probably did)

He also sent 2 emails out - that's targeted for sure.

And the tweets MAY be targeted.

Now - the question is, was digg WORTH IT. What was the percentage of value from digg alone?

It could be possible that all digg really did was send a ton of people and that it was a waste of 100 bucks.

Or it could be worth something.

Only LMC has that data, I'm assuming.

    Well....

I'm out for the weekend, so i won't be around to explain to the negative comments how marketing works. hope this helps some people, I can care two ****s about your comments webgains and BHC.

The traffic was targeted, the products pushed were targeted, the twitter accounts were targeted. the emails were targeted, the stumbles were targeted. It's not my fault you don't know how to leverage these resources to gain targeted traffic.

The whole point is, viral traffic can work, the whole point was to inspire, allow people to reach for their goals.

Those numbers, in general, are not that hard to believe. What is hard to believe that you'd achieve that from Twitter accounts you found on Fiver, Stumbleupon, and DIGG traffic. If you did, more power to you.

I don't really care if you did, and you probably don't care that I don't care. But those numbers don't add up based on your strategy.

        Dave: LOL

You and I seem to have taken different interpretations on what he said.

I thought he said that he only got his tweets from Fiverr, and I agree that if all of his traffic were from Fiverr tasks, then it would have smelled fishy.

I thought the StumbleUpon, Diggs and mailing lists were from other sources?

Guys, this isn't hard to believe at all. Keep in mind he sent out two emails (6,000 people). I'd almost believe it on that alone if the article was good and it was targeted enough (product makes a HUGE difference as well...)

.50 cents per click is relatively easy with Amazon if it's done right.

Congrats OP, you've definitely given me something to think about.

One take away is you have to have a little backup. I recently tried one $300
"experiment". Got zilch. Tried another one for $250, very little. Third try, $288
brought back $4,119 (in 19 days). I'm tired of the desperate threads where
somebody needs $45,000 by next Monday and only has $8.61 to spend. It aint
    happenin'.

So you spent a little over $800 and got back $4k+ in returns. Do not consider the earlier failed attempts as bad because you learned something from them and then modified your approach a little in your third attempt. Nicely done, keep experimenting! Would be glad if you shared your experiment experiences with us too.

Very interesting results to say the least. I have been doing well with StumbleUpon lately, but have not put much effort into Digg. Will certainly have to look into that.

What would be interesting is to try a similar strategy with an affiliate program that has a much longer cookie duration than the Amazon 24 hour cookie.

      Thanks for the share LMC.

A great aspect of this method is that is that it's not dependent on search engine rankings in Google. It shows the power of leveraging social bookmarking and other tools. There is life outside Google and it's attendant tedious "SEO" and "link building".

This a method which gives you speed and an immediate result.
