Making a better popup...

We see them everyday, some of us don't mind them, some tolerate them and others just plain hate these things. I'm talking about popups of all sorts of course. The concept of a popup has not changed significantly since I started dabbling with DHTML and some java.

So, tell me, what if anything would you change of the better popups and exit type scripts to be less annoying to the user but still boost conversions? I know, an intriguing question but something we owe ourselves to ask for the improvement of an overall internet experience.

    Here's what I want in a pop-up.

    1. The pop-up shows up only after a specified time. That is, I don't want it to pop up as soon as the page loads.

    2. The pop-up is intelligent. It only shows up if you're a new visitor. There are pop-ups that reload everytime you hit the refresh button or everytime you visit that site. These are just plain annoying.

    I don't know if these features have already been integrated with most pop-ups as I've never really used them before. But I sure would love one having the said features.

      There is already a few pop ups that can handle what you mentioned. Namely, one of them is pop up domination, it can be triggered if you're a new visitor and you can set the time that it pops up. I actually have it and have been testing it, it works descent and gives some control over traditional popups. You can take a look at my blog to see what i mean. If you meet certain parameters (like new visitor e.t.c.), it will pop up one time right away.

      I'm still not convinced this is the latest and best to come in popup technology for the user experience though. Look forward to any other feedback.
