INTERNET MARKETING

I just created my site last month using word press latest version I believe 2.6. Do I have to upgrade to version 2.7? What is the easiest way to do that?

Install this plugin:

WordPress › Wordpress Automatic upgrade WordPress Plugins

Also, you can upgrade your Wordpress installation from "Fantastico" if your host has it.

This is taken from the link I just gave you:

Wordpress automatic upgrade upgrades your wordpress installation by doing the following steps.

1. Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.
2. Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.
3. Downloads the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.
4. Puts the site in maintenance mode.
5. De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.
6. Upgrades wordpress files.
7. Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.
8. Re-activates the plugins.

Hi..

When you use the plugin mentioned above you will be ask to make a backup automatically, the plugin is really effective. If you just started a plain blog I don't think that you should make a backup, but if some content is in there, yes, make the backup.

  According to info on the WP website, that plugin is compatible up to v. 2.6.1
  
  Apparently v. 2.7 has its own upgrader, but many people who are using the plugin to GET to 2.7 are having trouble. You can read about it here:

  One recommendation there is to perform a manual upgrade to 2.7.

If you don't upgrade you may miss out on some important security tweaks..

Grab the auto upgrade plugin above... upload.. activate and follow the steps..it really is easy and guides you step by step along the process..

I did have trouble with the automatic upgrade plugin too, I kept having to activate and delete it, it was a pain, but still faster than the other way of upgrading. I can help if Jay is busy, just pm me.

Once you'll have 2.7 the automatic upgrade is built-in.
However, making a backup of your database before any upgrade is always a must: all your content (posts, Pages, comments, links, settings etc.) are stored in the database, not in the files! If anything goes wrong you can always restore it from the backup.

Ok let's set the record straight here...

1. WP 2.7 does have some bugs (yes I have been testing it for wordpress secured) There are some flaws.

2. You do NOT have to upgrade, it is your choice.. You should have security on your blog but you do not have to upgrade

3. I would not upgrade my blog to 2.7 just because it came out.. Huge mistake as you may be asking for more trouble than it is worth.

4. Wait to install 2.7 until other people get hacked, yes it is hackable.. Or if you are a customer of mine wait until I fix the security issues myself and not wait on wordpress to do it ...

I'm seconding James' advice - I've been testing 2.7 with various plugins for my boss. Some plugins are buggy with it. And some plugins flat out fail with it. I'd advise waiting till 2.71 or so and give all the plugin writers a bit more time to upgrade/debug.
