The Moron Letters

Notice what Guru’s aren’t in this. Maybe they’re behind it.

Mark Joyner?

Oooo… Kern is mentioned, but he’s not in it…. weird.

          I don't get it.

Why would anyone waste their time on something like this?

Is there a particular point they are trying to make other than
hopefully getting an outrageous enough response from some
of these people to make them look foolish after coming across
          as genuinely seeking their advice?

          Maybe i'm missing something.

The only good thing I see coming out of this is the amount of
leads "Casey" will get bc of her/his exploitation of our curiosities.

            Jason,

Unless there's something deeper here that I'm missing I think it's just a matter of having a little fun in an industry that can take itself a little too seriously from time to time.

Seems like a ripoff of the original "letters" book from the 1970's (I had a copy of the book as a teenager), "The Lazlo Letters" which was written by Don Novello (known most famously for his character Father Guido Sarducci on TV's Saturday Night Live).

No doubt about the list building but I'm not entirely sure this was anti-guru.

If you notice... there's a lot of guru promotion in it. Which brings me back to the OP saying maybe this was guru produced...

It's hard to say that if Gary Halbert were alive, if he would think these contained the quality of thinking that was in the original letters.

The Boron Letters are a lot better IMO, but I like real stuff about direct response, and when he was mailing the print newsletter every month I could hardly wait to read it.

The Boron letters were what they were... genius copywriting for the ages.

The Moron letters are a prank and nothing more.

You missing this point, mike? You can't compare the two.

It is possible I am missing the point, that happens sometimes. Can I compare them as attention getting copywriting devices, sure. But maybe I am reading more into it than was intended. That happens sometimes, too.

That they could have called this anything at all, but chose "The Moron Letters" makes me suspect that someone would like to imply that there is a comparison. Or that the graphics are tear sheets, that makes me think there might be something to the comparison too. Or the headline, which I think only rates a 7.5 or 8 on the Halbert scale, but is definitely in the Halbert range (from what I remember, anyway).

As far as a prank goes, maybe. I am kind of leaning towards, it being more than that, but we'll see before long I would imagine.

True enough for sure. I had to go to the post office where I lived then to get the newsletters, I owuld open them right there in the lobby. They were great and I learned a lot from them.

I was fortunate enough to see Gary in one of his last appearances at Ed and Frank's undies seminar in San Diego, where Jason Moffat won that award. Other than that I only talked with him once on the phone over something I had written.

I waited at the mailbox for the next issue from south of Jewfish Creek though and I learned a lot about copywriting from him. One time I wrote a last minute fundraising letter once for the local libertarians using my own version of what I had learned from Gary. Those folks had never seen anything like it.

It was an interesting experience to say the least.

Yeah cannot compare boron vs. moron. Two totally different things. Obviously.

This really is nothing like the Boron letters.

It's more like the written version of "Prank calls" to the gurus.

What's more amazing to me is how nice some of gurus are, despite how crazy Casey gets. A question I have is how Casey got the email addresses of the gurus in the first place... and got them to actually respond?

This was actually a technical mistake in putting in the URL, and there's no way to edit it after the fact. A support ticket has been opened, but it will be fixed when it's fixed.

(No, I am not Casey. Honestly, I'm not. If I was, I would be jumping up and down pointing at myself to get all the attention. And I wouldn't have used a pseudonym on something like this anyway.)

      Well, they're letters.

The Boron letters are one kind, the moron letters are another.

Specifically, the Boron letters are paper letters FROM a guru, and the moron letters are internet emails TO the gurus.

Both are terribly entertaining even if you don't learn squat from them.

I don't think there necessarily has to be any further similarity.

        Steady on there lol

It is an ingenious way to build a list. And I wondered what the hell it was all about when I saw a banner ad for it on here first thing this morning. Mystery solved :p

Um, did no one else notice that when you opt-in the video that tells you to confirm your email is Andy Jenkins' voice?

Notice what Guru's aren't in this. Maybe they're behind it.

    Mark Joyner?

Oooo... Kern is mentioned, but he's not in it.... weird.
Joyner would never do a backhanded slap at Gary Halbert like this person did.

The whole thing is a definitely a different spin on the whole anti guru scene. Very original to say the least.

Now what agenda does the person behind this really have?

I didn't get to read them - the sales letter said if you're easily offended or Prissy turn back - and I don't know what Prissy means and I am easily offended so I turned back.

Did anyone else read this and not find them really that funny?

I mean, I guess one or two lines made me chuckle but for laughs I'd rather watch reruns of Seinfeld or Conan.

I sorta agree... I mean, I did find many of the letters funny... others, I found the juxtaposition of the question to the person it was being posed to... and still other times it was actually the reaction that made me laugh out loud.

But... truth be told, you really can't beat Seinfeld in its heyday.

Still worth a laugh... or for you toughies like rediclander... worth a slight smile.

You can't beat Seinfeld or Conan. But, I don't think this kind of humor is really in the same category. What's funny isn't so much what's said in the reactions, but that the emails did or didn't get reactions at all.

It's kind like watching a "hidden camera" show or Sacha Baron Cohen as Ali G (youtube it). He asks the most off-the-wall questions and the participant isn't sure if he's serious or it's a joke.

      Me.

I thought the letters from Casey were snarky funny a bit but without the "guru" participating in the back and forth it kinda fell flat. Now if they had played along, it would have been good.

      Boring!

I opted in to read this.

Do you really consider this funny?

I didn't laugh at all. Worthless to me.

But hey, maybe my sense of humor is simply different.

    Who knows :/

Yeah... especially when it comes to humor it's different strokes for different folks.
