    Yes!

Wordpress is much more versatile! You will have a whole new world opened up to you, so many themes and plugins. I have not used dreamweaver in sooo long thanks to wordpress, and you'll never know!

Best web building platform out there, in my opinion!

If you think installing WP on your own domain with your own hosting package - it may be worth the effort.

If you think starting anything on wordpress.COM - forget it!

YES, this is an important distinction. Wordpress.COM is nowheresville.

Having your own domain is fantastic. I finally made the plunge and it's much better, more options, etc. etc. etc. And it's so cheap even I can afford it. I don't know why anyone would NOT get their own domain/hosting.

It only depends on one thing.

Do you want to be in control of your site or do you want someone else to be?

Self Hosted WP is the only way to go if you want to control your own destiny.

Whats the process of moving my godaddy domain name over to a hosting company from tumblr? (I'm assuming hostgator is the unanimous choice correct)

Hostgator is the unanimouse choice yes Regarding moving your godaddy name over to Hostgator, I do believe they have an answer for that in the faq so I would advice you to go have a look in Hostgator's faq database.

Putting your site on HG is a pretty simple task. You just change over the nameservers in Godaddy after you get your hosting information from HG.

Then you install wp on your domain at HG. Some people use Fantastico to do this, it will be in your cpanel dashboard on your site. Some people install wordpress manually, which helps it to be more secure.

A little more complicated would be getting your content you already have on the Tumblr to show up on your new wp blog. Hopefully there is something in Tumblr to help you do that.

I have all the articles and videos on my computer so I'm assuming I could just reblog them.

Cool. You are a step ahead of a lot of people who do not have content on their computers. Good move on your part.

That would be a matter of changing the nameservers at godaddy. Hostgator or whatever hosting company you use will give you the nameservers and Hostgator have instructions for changing them at several different registrars in their faq.

Another alternative is for you to self host your main site, but retain the tumbler blog to use to link to your main site and set up your main site's RSS feeds on there. Also get a free Wordpress blog, Squidoo, Hubpages etc. Make them all a bit different but add your main sites links and RSS.

Tumblr is a great blogging platform, but like many have said, its not as versatile as Wordpress.

That being said, for blogging I prefer tumblr. My corporate blog is tumblr based and my personal blog is as well.

If you're going to go wordpress, I recommend getting a good host and some type of good security system. I use Sucuri.net and really like it. For hosting I'd go with either MediaTemple or Liquidweb.

Don't go with a host that offers unlimited _anything_, thats just marketing speak for completely oversold servers.

I'll be honest, I've never used Tumblr for self-hosted sites, so I can't speak about it's back-end, but if it helps at all, a friend of mine transferred a 2000-page site from Joomla to WordPress for the sake of greater leverage.

Take it for what it's worth...

Just the plug ins available for Wordpress make it worth the switch.

And definitely get your own domain and hosting; nothing worse than someone else owning your income generator.

Yes you should move because Wordpress is much more customizable and can easily be turned into a custom websites. Plus you can have your own domain. Tumblr is limited and you cannot make as much money from it. I would keep Tumblr to drive traffic to your new Wordpress website though.

keep the tumblr! Good for a backlink to your new site! But yes, start a new site on wordpress (self-hosted, as others have said, because otherwise it's still a hosted site no diff. to tumblr) - and also make sure you get a keyword friendly domain. if you can't get an exact match then add a letter or two, max, or at a pinch a second keyword.

You really don't have to choose one or the other as they both have their strengths. You can use both, like you use Facebook and Twitter not one or the other.

    Try this:
    1. Install a self hosted WP site
    2. Install the FeedWordPress plugin
    3. Grab the RSS feed from your Tumblr site and have it repost all your "Tumbls" to your WP blog
    Then you can:
    • Take advantage of the easy, fast posting and other perks of Tumblr
    • Take advantage of the full features of WP and post anything direct there that's too much for Tumblr
    • Have all your Tumblr content safe and sound
Tumblr and WordPress are both too awesome to pass up on so use both together and it's a win, win.

Thanks so much for all the advice! One quick question though. What do you mean exactly by "self-hosted"? Does that mean purchase hosting through somewhere like HostGator?
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3645285].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Kezz
That's right Michael, you grab a hosting account, point a domain at it and install WP yourself. If you want to have something other than your Tumblr blog this is kind of a "must" so you have total ownership of your site. Plus you really only get all the perks of WP if you self host.

I've had problems with Hostgator shutting down sites of mine on servers I suspect had too many people on them, so my personal hosting recommendation is Host Duplex.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. I'm going to switch my guitar site over soon I believe. It's more of a personal site that I just like to have fun with and its a true passion of mine so it makes it even more enjoyable. I've realized that the "guitar for beginners" niche is pretty stiff competition and I doubt I'll ever make anything serious out of this site except helping a few people learn a song.

I'm beginning to really start my IM marketing for the first time this week and am contemplating some niches right now, trying to figure out which gives me a good change to make any kind of cash. I'd be happy with $50 a month, just something to fill the car up while I learn the ropes!

Thanks to everyone who has offered me the advice, I'm glad to be apart of this wonderful community.

The real wordpress is ONLY wordpress.ORG and wordpress.COM.
Everything else is just trying to make money from the popularity of this blogging script!

Wordpress.org - the place you download the free, open source blogging script from.
Wordpress.com - the place where the same guys offer a free blog (Warning: no commercial use allowed) as a subdomain, e.g. michael.wordpress.com

Wordpress takes a little bit more work to set up, but it is certainly worth it. You can then customize everything from SEO plugins to the theme. If you need any help (or hosting) PM me as I own a web hosting company

It really depends on what your goals are for the blog.

Look, I make my living, full time, developing websites and 90% of that is WordPress development.

But the fact is that a lot of people try to make WordPress do something that another tool will do better.

Beware of anyone who has one answer for everything. They either have an agenda, have only one trick or they haven't thought it out much.

Tumblr has it's uses. If this is your first blog and you're not sure you are going to continue, there is nothing wrong with using tumblr (or blogger, or posterous, or squidoo, or, or, or, or...) for a while. When you decide it's something you want to get more out of, start a self hosted blog (WordPress is a GREAT choice, but honestly there are other self hosted systems and some very good reasons to use them), start one up and relegate the tumblr blog to a link and referrence aside for the main blog.

Even if you are already blogging on a self hosted blog, there are lots of great reasons to supplement it with a solid microblog hosted off domain.

For me tumblr is more for personal use than in business. If it is more freedom that you want and you are sure that you will be blogging for a long time then go wordpress.
