Article Marketing: Why do some RULE it, yet others FAIL at it?

I have read hundreds of posts on WF about people using article marketing. From what I can see, there are three groups of people: Those who Rule. those who FAIL, and those who never attempt it...but plan to

Anyway, why do so many people FAIL at article marketing? I get allhyped up reading the threads about how great article marketing is, but there are equal amounts of people, if not more, that fail.

Why do some fail and others succeed at it? How do I knw which category I will fall in?

Because some people can't write their way out of a paper bag for starters.

Then, they don't know how to do proper keyword research, or they sell
products that their mother wouldn't buy, or they submit to directories that
have crappy traffic, or their sites look like sh*t, or they simply throw up a
link and think that's gonna do it, or they write a review but can't write a
review to save their life (refer to my first sentence in this thread) or they
write resource boxes that sound like advertisements for death.

None of the above are on any particular order.

Bottom line: Not everybody is going to be successful with article marketing
because there is more to it than just writing articles.

And yes, this reply is THIS short.

You won't know until you try. You want guarantees? Go to Walmart. There
are no guarantees in this business. Some people succeed and some people
        fail.

Concentrate on mastering those skills that I mentioned in my post and you'll
        give yourself the best chance.

That's the best answer I can give you.

          There is a 4th group

Those who take action and start writing articles and learn the craft.
They start as failures and end up ruling just as Steven & I have done

          We all start somewhere

Exactly. Looking back at my first few articles my article writing has definitely come a long way. It didn't take me long to catch on, but you do have to work at it. There are just so many different variables involved in writing a successful article and I think many newbies end up giving up because of the false assumption that it's easy money. It is in fact very easy money, but only when you get each of those variables just right - from the initial research right through to the landing page.

I would agree with Steven .. And when someone offers a great WSO or Sale for Real, Fresh articles many are scared to grab them up because they have been so mislead with PLR junk articles..

Many directories contain a great deal of useless articles that are just PLR junk.. So when someone offers you fresh articles grab them up and go use them.. You would be surprised at the difference..

Well, I find it's working, but slowly... Need to write more articles A LOT more articles!

Plus some of the affil links aren't converting like they're supposed to (grrrr).

Then again, I think with tying it in with Twitter and Facebook, mentioning/linking to choice articles in forums and networks etc., I'm seeing increasing traction. Which is good coz I LOVE article marketing.

Anyone can learn to write articles, but it takes a little time to get it right. The only way to succeed is to learn from those who have success with it, and start writing articles for yourself.

You will make mistakes in the beginning but you will get better and better with every article you write. If you've never done article marketing before, the basic guide can be found at:

Nice covert promo from richjerksnet...for his wso...lmao

Back to the subject at hand. Lost of good reasons and advice thus far in the thread. In reality there are alot of variables to take into account when running a a traffic campaign, whether its article marketing, ppc, media buys, etc.

Article quality alone has alot that needs to be done properly to get "dem" clicks. To sum it up is your article written well, targeting the write people, using the right words, all on a grease slide pointing to a well written resource box? What time and day of the week was the article submitted?

Like most things, practice and abit of luck is at the root of the issue, after discounting issues related to the writers character and ability. A quick way to cut your learning curve is to watch and model those who are all ready doing well at article marketing...lots to learn for free if you learn to observe properly. That goes for everything pretty much, just watch and learn...

I think a lot of it has to do with the landing page. Many people emphasize all their focus on the "article," and when the reader gets to the landing page, they feel like they are getting sold?

I don't know if what I'm saying makes sense or not...

But I guess what I'm saying is whenever I hit an affiliate landing page I rarely see content that actually "reviews the product."

I see more of "This is the best product that will solve X, so click here!" type reviews.

I'm still learning, but I guess an actual review of the product might actually help newbies out with article marketing. Maybe I'm wrong, hopefully somebody can clarify this point further.

I'm a starter, but I am willing to try everything I can to be a successful internet marketer and chase my dreams. If you can answer any of my questions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I think all the above are totally correct.
Think about the books that you've read. I've bought books that I could not put down once I started and even when I had to put them down, they were buzzing around my head. Then there were other books that were interesting enough but not too much trouble to have a break from and then there were the ones where reading became a chore.
If you can learn to tell a story that keeps them glued, you'll succeed. In the meantime, practice, check your spelling and keep improving your landing page.

Just to give you a few numbers:

      At Ezine Articles, I have:
115 articles that have been read 44,000 times total
      1,023 times they've been published
      2,490 URL clicks

Are those good numbers? I don't think so... 44,000 and only 2,490 clicks? Since I can't do math, I can't tell you the % but I would expect way more clicks.

Mistake #1. The first articles were not keyword targeted.
Mistake #2. This is only 115 articles in 2 years.
Mistake #3. My landing pages were bad and still are not perfect.

I tried a different resource box and my clicks went down, so I reverted to my original and they went back up.

The readership was good but I realize now that my articles provide way too much information. So much, in fact, that the readers don't have to go to my site because their curiosity has been satisfied.

You have to leave them wanting more, something I've yet to master. There are several ways to do that. For one, you can give them 5 points on a topic and send them to your site for the other 5. I read that somewhere.

Quantity is important. The more articles you publish, the sooner you become a recognized "expert" on your subject, and the more likely people will click over. Also, keep in mind that your articles will get buried as other marketers keep submitting their own content. The only way to stay on top is to write more frequently than they do and do it regularly. I read that somewhere, too.

People fail because they are not willing to put in the effort and have a little patience.

Article Marketing is a puzzle. People that have patience and who are willing to spend the time and energy to solve the puzzle, will succeed.

It's more than just being able to write. There are so many different parts to it and so many different variables that you can control. Then there are the hundreds of other variables that you only have minimal control over.

If you want to solve the puzzle, step back for a moment and look at the whole thing as one large puzzle. Every piece has to be done right and put in the right place in order to finish the puzzle. The most successful article marketers that I have worked with had the ability to see the entire thing as a whole, as well as mastering each piece of the puzzle.

Nobody is going to tell you everything you need to do (because they have paying clients). So take some time and see if you can figure out all of the pieces. If you can master each one, you will easily be able to RULE IT.

I hope that makes sense to everyone.

Now, pick up the first piece and get to work...just remember that this is not PPC or Email Marketing, you're going to have to have some patience in order to realize the results you're going to get.
