Best cheap autoresponder? (one time fee)

by BillyL
25 replies
I'm looking for a supercheap autoresponder. No monthly costs but rather a one-time fee.
I want to run it on my own server (PHP-script) and I dont want any "free trials".

Anyone can recommend a autoresponder for me?

You can try the Open Source FREE program Infinite Responder.

As long as you know how to create a database a set up a cron job in cpanel you shouldn't have any problems. The manual walks you through it. There is also an option to have it installed for around $30.

It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the big guys, but it seems to do what I need. I just put it on a few domains last month and it seems to be working well. You can also run multiple lists from one installation.

There was also a thread recently about a WP Plugin that is an autoresponder. You might want to search for the thread and see what people are saying about it.

Frankly, do not go for these low cost/free autoresponders, mainly because most of your follow-up or broadcast emails end up in the spam folder of your subscribers. This actually derails your list buildng campaign. Add a few dollars every month and go for the more established ARs, they are worth it.

Up to now Infinite Responder would have been my recommendation, but it hasn't worked on the last couple of sites I've tried to install it on, so I think it only works with older versions of php, Linux (or both). It seems to have been abandoned by its author too, which is a real shame as I found it very useful .

Imnica occasionally has lifetime deals. They're established and well known. That's likely your best bet if you can get one (I don't have the money for it now or I'd grab one).

      I couldn't agree more, erichammer

I've had an Imnica account for more than 2 years and have had great results. They're very communicative if you need help.

I think they're a much better choice for a one time fee option than trying to host your own autoresponder.

But even if you get a small monthly plan from Imnica, Aweber or GetResponse--- if you are even doing just a little business you get the savings of your time and efficiency. I had a friend who sent out emails to his list manually for years, and after he got a simple Imnica account he freed up 4 hours a week.

He lost almost a full month of his life in 3 years (4 hrs/week x 52 weeks x 3 years = 26 days) --just because he didn't feel like learning the process. Noone on this forum would ever do that....

Saw this and had to comment. I had Imnica for slightly over a year ...the WORST service and WORST delivery rates. When I switched to GetResponse, my open rate immediately went up 270%....and sales were commensurately higher as well.

Using Iminca, in my experience, was the biggest false economy I ever engaged in. With the size of my list, it cost me thousands in lost sales. Free auto-responders, imo, are a false economy as well.

Mailchimp provides a superb, free service. You have to be careful how you use it though since they explicitly state ‘Affiliate Marketing’ as being in infringement of their TOS. To me, that’s open to interpretation, i.e. if you have a website that deals with a certain issue and inform your list when new info is published, you shouldn’t have a problem. On the other hand, if you use it to blast out emails every second day with product offers, you’re account will probably get deleted pretty quickly.

Looks like you didn't read my original post.
I dont want to use any free services. I dont want to use a script installed on any other server than my own.

I would NEVER risk my list by using a service where I break the TOS from the start. That's just plain dumb..

        Hi BillyL,

If you want self hosted check out Interspire Email Marketer. I would send through smtp.com unless your willing to get your IP whitelisted.

Imnica mail at $9/month to start for 5,000 leads. This to my mind is the best option for you. MailChimp prohibits too much to be worth it and if you go for the self-hosted option, you risk getting nuked by your host for complaints or for bringing their server to its knees. If you can't afford $9 a month something is wrong.

But first, take a very careful look through other threads here about them, and see how many Warriors have built up lists there and lost them suddenly, for not having read/understood the terms of service.

Some report that they've had their accounts closed down "in the night" and then subsequently been unable even to get a reply to an inquiry about it (Mailchimp later commenting that "customer support is only for people who are still customers").

All the following are prohibited there (terms of service, section 11f):-

      • Escort and dating services
      • Pharmaceutical products
      • Work from home, Internet Lead-gen, Make money on online opportunities, etc.
      • Online trading, day trading tips, or stock market related content
      • Gambling services, products or gambling education
      • Multi-level marketing

I agree with you, but he could always export and import his list.
The reason I dont use these montly payment solutions is that I want to have my list on my own server.
What stops the owner of the service to use my list for themselfs?

If you want to run an autoresponder script from your own
server, then you'll need to spend some money.

It's not something I'd recommend "cheaping out" on.

If you want to receive a reliable and valuable solution then
    you'll need to spend money.

Some credible scripts that you can run from your server
    include...

    Interspire E-mail Marketer

Email Marketing | Email Marketing Software | Interspire Email Marketer (no affil.)

    ActiveCampaign E-mail Marketer

Email Marketing Software | Email Marketing | Email Campaign Software (no affil.)

    Autoresponder Plus

Follow Up Autoresponder Software for EMail Marketing - AutoResponse Plus (no affil.)

Both Interspire and ActiveCampaign will allow you to
send e-mail via either your own server or an external
SMTP server such as smtp.com, authsmtp.com, etc.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

This seems like a never ending debate (unfortunately)
Does anyone else use MailPoet (aka Wysija) which allows you use your site's email and has tremendous support - it's a plugin that interacts with Magic Action Box.
With the two premium providers i tried I ended up in Spam - testing on my alternative email and my girlfriend's, yet with this I end up in the Primary tab of GMail..
So, if this is working so well, why am I not seeing others mention it? Or is everyone just hooked on the idea of having to spend money?

You can use a script on your server and use a 3rd party SMTP service like Amazon SES, Mandrill, mailjet, sendgrid etc. There is a free autoresponder script from parabots.com and paid ones like arpreach.

Do not build your I'm business with a low quality responder when you can get a quality one for under $15 dollars like getresponse

IMSC Rapid Mailer is also an option because you can hook it into services like Send Grid and Amazon SES. They handle everything for you without the monthly cost. In the case of Amazon, when you hit 10k sent it's $1 before that, it's free.
